I've got a squire vintage 77RI model and its basically the perfect solution to the Geddy Bass problem. Slim taper neck, very thin and satin finish so its fast. But, i rarely change the truss rod and the adjustment is on the headstock anyway

Living in Houston Texas, we have crazy humidity. I have a couple of basses that the necks shift regularly. I have found that hanging them on wall hangers from the headstock seems to keep movement to a minimum.

@@beeblebrux2112 I usually adjust the truss rod twice a year, just like my other basses. Last week I put on a set of D'Addario Pro Steels (XL EPS 220). Really low tension strings. And sound great.

@LakeOfLitSterno
@LakeOfLitSterno 6 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to stiffness and hardness of the neck wood. You can tell instantly when you pick up a bass or guitar. Pull back on the neck from the bottom frets until it frets out. Some necks are strong, some are rubber. Put the rubber necked ones back on the shelf and keep looking...

Dave, if you have carpal tunnel think about getting the release surgery. I had a bad case of CT in both hands and the surgery was very easy and fixed my hands! I would wake up in the middle of the night with both hands on fire and that never happens anymore. It was the best thing I've ever done!!!

My GL Japan had the brass plates too. I thought the neck was defective because I needed to adjust it every time the weather changed, but I guess it was the way the neck is. I later got a neck with the carbon rods and that rarely needs adjustment.

It's not always the trussrod. The saddles of my Ibanez gradually lowered over time. The little screws managed to turn by vibration. After having applied some Loctite it didn't happen anymore.
@mal2ksc
@mal2ksc 6 жыл бұрын
I've used clear nail polish to keep screws from backing out, not just on guitars but on wind instruments as well. That's not a knock on Loctite, but I usually have the nail polish on hand for instant scratch first aid (keep the metal from oxidizing, and fix it properly later). The fact that the saddle screws can start rattling and the bridge pieces can get tilted when I know damn well I balanced them says you're right -- they will move on their own unless secured somehow.

It seems like the import series of Geddy Lee Jazz Basses experiences more than their fair share of neck issues, at least from a few postings that I've been seeing in a few bass forums. I don't know if the US made are more stable, or that they just tend to be newer than the imported ones. I've had the same issues with a Peavey T-40 that I have, although that's a thirty five year old bass
@offbeatbassgear
@offbeatbassgear 7 жыл бұрын
I just read the post below about the reinforcement rods in the US-made ones that are made of graphite. That would impart a greater level of stability to the neck.

I think this is quite serious design flaw, my BB614 that I setup on my own is spot on pretty much since... I set it up... and I have just bought six string bass (cheap harley benton B-650, awesome bass imo, I have no idea how they manage to make such a great instrument for that low price (or I just got lucky?)) and again... no problem since I got it in spec once (took a bit longer tho, but patience is the key when it comes to setup)

I've been thinking about one of those HB FanFret-5B basses. I'd expect a bit of a rough finish but I'd like to give fan frets a try and you have to live with a change like that for a while before you know if you're gonna like it or not After getting an HB35+ recently, I was pleasantly surprised how nice she was; even better after a fret dressing ;^)

Hey dave have you ever tried using the type of foam that comes with pickups and then cutting down some guitar pickup springs and putting them under the pickup? Thats what I do, so that I don't need to add foam every time I want to raise up my pickups and theres still foam down there so theres nothing rattling around causing problems.

Dave i admire your patience, i wanted to put heavier gauge rotosounds on my other Steve Harris signature today and i had to adjust the truss rod so many freaking times (neck on neck off) then adjusting the saddles on the bridge then adjusting the truss rod again etc.etc.cos for whatever reason they gave Steves new signature bass a thinner neck then the lovely neck that is on the blue one, after all was said and done it took me 4 hours and i wanted to throw the fucking thing in a box i still dont think the shit is right, is it okay for a neck to have a very slight forward bow in the middle? The strings are very heavy gauge, thanks for all you do.

I've mentioned this before but I have guitars that are fifty years old and older and have NEVER had to adjust the truss rod. Dave says it's because they were made with older wood. I can't imagine having to adjust a truss rod that often just to maintain playability. Fender should be ashamed.

jltrem in my opinion, someone messed with the pick up height after Dave set it up... also the pick guard is hogged out for easy access to the truss rod. I don't feel like its out of the question that maybe the same rocket scientist that played with the pickups also adjusted the neck... just an opinion. people who mess with guitars that a tech set up should be known as gooch-bags... can I patent that?
