3/4HP Rockler is terribly insufficient for 4" piping on long runs like yours! There are to many fittings & long runs reducing your CFM. At minimum you should be using a 2HP blower and 2 micron 98% filters as you suffer from allergies. This will also prolong the life of the pre filters & primary filters on your two air cleaners. Also you won't need to run them for long periods of time.

Might want to put a screen in that pan under the belt grinder in case you drop something your working on. That vacuum will suck it right up.

DO NOT follow his advice as is, unless you upgrade the whole thing to 2HP dust collector I have the same 1hp 650 cfm machine and with all that piping it is useless, I had just 2 overhead pipes, 10' and 5', took them down, useless, very little suction. This size of dust collector is only good with one hose, one tool at a time. I do use a thian baffle garbage can for the big chunks. For smaller tools use vacuum cleaner with dust deputy, much more efficient. Yes the bag is 30 microns, not great, but I have no big issues with table saw, just found 3 micron replacement bag on Amazon.

3/4 HP collector is way undersized for such a shop. It is designed for a single tool, not a distributed system. Need 2+hp and a large impeller. Also, Since you are in the garage, I would recommend just venting to the outside, (after catching all the big stuff into the trashcan), instead of using a bag.

IMHO 100% silicone for the trashcan. Schedule 35 pvc would work, is cheaper and uses less fittings, just not available at Home Depot.

Thank you so much. This was a lot of good information. I make custom hand forged knives and my biggest problem is trying to keep my shop clean from all the dust that collects in my little shop. I have a collection system that just isn't put together correctly. This video will help a lot. By the way I read a lot of these responses and some of you folks need to lighten up a bit. You don't like something? Don;'t be so damned critical. Why don't you guys put something better out there? Because you can't!

That's not a dust collector system, it's a chip collector system. The difference is your letting up to 30 microns of dust out or the system into the air you breath. You'd be better off venting that waste air outside. Your still going to need to wear a mask for health reasons. Any system starts at the pipe size, 4" pipe is too small, also that trashcan lid combo does not work, then the filter bag isn't removing fine dust and it blocks airflow volume. Mim 6" pipe, a 2 hp motor, and cyclone 2 stage system with a hepafilter.

I have installed this same set-up in my basement shop based on this video. I have 4 drops and about 40' of PVC pipe runs. I encountered two issue that have been easily corrected. First, without glueing or securing the PVC vertical connections they can apart, I ended up using PVC glue to keep the vertical drop connections together. Second, the dust bag that comes with the dust right unit clogged with dust and greatly reduced the suction power. Even clean the bag with compressed air would only help for a few days then it would clog up again. I upgraded the bag to the canister filter and have been running it for two weeks with no issues. For a home DIY woodworker this is a great solution.

if you get the thinner walled white or green pipe, you can use a heat gun to expand or contract the PVC to the size fitting you need.

With plastic pipes, you need to worry about static electricity. With all that fine dust that is airborne, you have a bomb. Run a bare wire internally through all the pipes and then ground it. Make your system a lot safer! Secondly, 6" pipe would probably be better. It's all about static pressures, air flow rates, and velocity. Have a look at billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/ducting.cfm#pipe_size Finally, good as those trash-can things are, if you are putting this much effort in, I would go for a cyclone (the website I linked to above has some excellent plans...

Paul, can you please cite a case where a woodworking shop has blown up like a bomb due to not grounding the PVC pipe. From my knowledge this has been disproved time and time again but is still epidemic in the minds of woodworkers because it keeps being restated over and over again as fact.

Paul Simpson a bomb? I was an explosives detection military working dog handler in the US Army, could you enlighten me as to how this creates a bomb? I've done multiple combat tours and I've never heard of or seen a bomb with the combination of sch 40 pvc pipe, static electricity and saw dust....and I've seen some creative shit.

I must start by saying thank you for your service. I am English, but live here in the US (Indiana, to be exact). For those not experienced in the US culture, one thing my family and I noticed when we arrived (and continue to be impressed by on a daily basis, is the respect shown to those who make a career out of risking their lives to keep us safe, Whether in civilian life as, for example, a Firefighter, or in the military. I may not always agree with the politicians who put you guys in harm's way, but I am sure as hell grateful that you are willing to go! (Sorry to go on, but it's a bit of a soapbox of mine... I would love to see that part of American life exported to the UK with the same enthusiasm as fast food and dubious "music"!!) Anyway, back to the point... LOL! As I'm sure you realize, I'm not talking about something to use as a weapon! As an explosives expert, I'm sure you have done the candle and powder experiment? For anyone who is reading this who doesn't know, you basically get a tin, a small candle, a small quantity of fine powder (cornstarch, perhaps) and a plastic tube. Pile up the powder over one end of the tube, place the (lit) candle next to it and invert the can over the whole lot. Then, blow into the tube. The powder will fly up into the air and, one airborne, ignite. The resulting "explosion" is powerful enough to flip the can over and, in some cases, cause it to get blown off the table. A bomb? Well, it depends upon your perspective. Now, back to the example here. While the system is running, you have a flammable fine powder (sawdust) suspended in air. As it passes along the plastic tubing, it can generate a static charge. If this gets high enough, there is a good chance of a spark.... and.... it's the can all over again, except this time there is a LOT more dust. At the very least, it will probably cause damage to your extraction system. At worst? Well, let's just say I'd rather not be in there! So, is it a bomb? You may say no and I am not going to argue. BUT, should you take precautions (by running the ground-wire to drain the static)? I would say yes. Sure, we can probably find hundreds of folks who have been using systems like this that are unprotected without incident, but let me ask you this...... In all your combat duty, how many times have you been shot and saved by a flak jacket? Does the low incidence of such events mean that you shouldn't wear one? How many car journeys are taken ever day without incident? Yet we still fit airbags and seat-belts. How many times have you been on a building site and been hit on the head with falling debris? Yet workers still wear hard-hats. My point? Safety precautions are no use if taken after the (potential) incident, you take them just in case, to be safe. Not adding a grounding wire to the system does not mean an explosion is inevitable, however adding one is inexpensive and certainly won't CAUSE an explosion! (Of course, it also won't help with stopping you getting debris in your eyes, cutting yourself with sharp tools or getting your significant other pregnant, but we have other ways of protecting ourselves from those happenings!!)

I would like to add to the discussion of PVC systems and the build up of electrical static charge. I have watched many systems that have been posted on KZbin regarding grounding to prevent fires and explosive situations. The only thing that I could find with OSHA is that if the cyclone system is over 10ft in length the collection spot must be located outside of the building. Bottom line is to do as much research as you can to make yourself safe in your own shop. Be safe and enjoy life! OSHA link : www.osha.gov/dts/hib/hib_data/hib19970502.html

I've seen a few videos about PVC dust collection systems lately, where all had to be grounded, to prevent static electricity building up and potentially creating a dust-fire. Do you have a specific reason why you didn't do this?

My guess is that he didn't try to ground it because grounding PVC is literally impossible without encasing every inch of pipe in metal. PVC is an insulator, so grounding it really isn't necessary (or possible).

I rarely will post anything negative.. but when I see something so groddly wrong I can't help it. Your not collecting any fine dust (the stuff that will really hurt your lungs) with a 3/4hp blower and that much ducting. It could barely move those electrical nuts.. That much duct work with that many bends, that much resistance in the system, minimum...MINIMUM 3hp blower with a 14 or 15 inch impeller... ideally you need a 5hp cyclone to drive that system. That 5 micron bag is a siv. You should have a cartridge filter from Winn Environmental with sufficent surface area to not drag the CFM down. You really should do some research before doing a video for which people will copy thinking this is the right way to setup a dust collection. I hope you take this comment seriously and revise your setup. Your lungs will thank you.

Jim Hinze What you tube videos would you recommend for people to look at for advice on a garage system that isn't going to cost an arm and a leg? Say one based on the dust right and with the needed modifications to make it 1-2 micron filtering? Ideal filtering vs what most can afford is a big leap but we would all like to get the harmful dust out of our shop and saying that our garage door being open (as some of the you tubers do) is an inadequate response to me! But I would like to keep it as affordable as possible as well! Looking for a go to video.

BTW: I was at my table saw last week... 50 hp all overhead metal blowpipe. The last 20 feet or so of the drop is 4" flexible hose (plastic, with metal spiral rib). Enough charge was accumulating on the embedded metal spiral for me to see it arcing when I touched to end to the saw housing. Very small, but visible arc.

I'm with the rest of the comments regarding how insufficient your dust collection system is you installed. AND the fact it is not grounded is a fire just waiting to happen. It would appear you did not do your homework on the subject first by not installing a powerful enough horsepower motor. My tiny shop of 16 x 10 has a 2hp dust collection system which may be too powerful, but better to be too powerful than not enough. I hope anyone looking to copy a dust collection system reads the comments BEFORE they watch your video. After reading the comments I am very surprised you didn't take this video down. Is it ego that has prevented you from doing the RESPONSIBLE thing????

Old video, but for the posterity, many may be surprised that a good old high temp hot glue will hold on to these hard to glue plastics (LDPE and HDPE) of thrash cans and 5 gallon buckets better than silicone and perhaps even polyurethane adhesive, especially the crappy gorilla glue type that foams and gets hard.

I'm also venting mine outside but I'm installing a "Y" fitting along with a blast gate in both pipes that way I can choose if I want to vent outside or use to HEPA filter in extreme temps. Options are always good and since you're cutting a hole in your wall anyway you might as well install the HEPA filter that goes with your vacuum.

Look for DWV pvc, it's a very thin wall and will hit over most of your dust collection accessories. there are also connectors called 'street' connectors, that have one end that goes on the outside of the pipe and the other will fit inside the pipe. that will help you fit many accessories that the DWV pipe doesn't fit on it's own.

For smaller tools, yes, but you will want to use something like a shop-vac/cyclone combo. They operate high pressure but low volume which is fine for the smaller cross-sectional area of a 2.5" or smaller hose. When you step up to big tools like planer, jointer, and table saw, you will see where low pressure high volume systems need the 4, 6, and 8in. 4in schedule 40 PVC is simply the cheapest and easiest aquired solution.

Considering that dust from many kinds of wood (plywood, MDF, etc.) is toxic, you would not only be putting other peoples health at risk, but you would be opening yourself up to a lawsuit from any neighbors that may come down with any lung issues. on top of that, you would be an A-hole for blowing dust all over/in your neighbors houses and cars.
@bobnald

What you blow outside depends upon the system. A well-designed two-stage system leaves little dust in the exhaust. I ran the exhaust from a 2 h.p. Oneida two-stage system outside. I filled and emptied the barrel several times. Sometimes I had visible dust on the ground below the exhaust, but rarely. Neighbors had no reason to know what came out of that duct, much less complain. The harmful fine particles disburse in the vast outdoor air system. Unlike collecting them in an enclosed shop, no one is exposed to a concentration that would pose danger of lung disease. That being said, my new shop uses a very fine filter from Oneida (rather than blowing air outside) so I am not exchanging hot outside air for my cooler shop air.

Nice tips, but here in 2022 I used SDR 35 drain pipe for my 6" main and then split into 2 - 4" sub runs in the shop for my Grizzy G0944 (1-micron canister w/Super Dust Deputy separator in front). Much cheaper than SCH 40 pipe & fittings and the typical connectors available from manufacturers like PowerTec, HQRP, etc. fit perfectly without need for the special ones. Another benefit of SDR 35 is it is even lighter and easier to cut than SCH 40. The cost of SCH 40 in 2022 is crazy expensive... a 10' foot section of 6" will run $100+, whereas SDR 35 runs about $60. The downside... it is blue/green and not white like the fittings. ;)

Just wanted to give some hacks I use that are cheaper and quicker. 4” j-hook to hang pipe are 80¢ at Grainger and I like in Alaska which is normally more expensive than the lower 48. Also look under Clevis hanger, pipe tie, pipe strap, conduit hanger, strut clamps- hell even metal strapping will work. Also you can use a 4” roof pipe flashing they’re $8 and can be bent to help hone in the dust. However you’re only as good as the blower motor... don’t skimp on that. I wouldn’t go less than 2 HP. And you can section off the area to dampen sound with a zipwall.

How are you dealing with eliminating ESD (Electro Static Discharge? Your system seems very well built but this issue can cost you your shop and/or your life. PVC produces a LOT of ESD especially when wood rubs inside of it in a dry day. This ESD can ignite the sawdust in a very violent way causing an explosion. If this is something you had not thought of I suggest you do the research and ensure you protect yourself. All it takes is one spark in your system to ignite all the dust all the way to the collection bin/bag/can at the end of the system. I've seen the results before, not pretty at all.

You can save a TON of money using sewer pipe instead of schedule 40. Schedule 40 is for “High Pressure.” You don’t need that for a dust collection system. You also need a good filter vs a bag. Bags don’t filter near small enough dust particles to help out with allergens in the air..

I'm currently "mentally designing" a similar system for my garage/workshop and plan to use many of your ideas. I liked your use of available components. A few commenters questioned the PVC size chosen. My rationale is to use a smaller size plumbing, based on the knowledge I'll only be using only ONE power tool at any given time. Also, my "workshop" is substantially smaller, so I see no real need for the larger setup in mine. I also liked the use of "shutoff's" at each port. I loved the homemade mounting brackets. GREAT, simple design, that looks good and functions well. In regard to the static build up issue, I understand the principle, but I also agree there seems to be no verifiable instance(s) of an explosion in a garage workshop. Still, I may opt to incorporate some sort of grounding system in mine to completely eliminate any chance of static buildup. Thankfully, I have access to a significant amount of FREE copper wire for this. I see this as carrying a handgun and hopefully never needing it, but it's worth more than it's weight in gold if/when you do. ELIMINATE that possibility as I see it... ESPECIALLY since the anti-static components are free. Why NOT do it, right? Thanks for a good video. :-)

How well does this pick up metal dust then? My KMG spits out a lot of very hot steel dust. I want to make something like this for my future shop as all of my grinding is done out doors currently but that will change soon. I am concerned about the hot sparks generated and hitting the plastic and subsequently being drawn into the entire system. My grinder also doubles as my knife handle shaper and I also think about steel dust mixing with wood dust and catching fire too. I am thinking that when I make my setup I will be using a metal funnel similar to what you have with metal piping for maybe the first five feet or so. Maybe I am paranoid but I don't want a fire and I know neither do you. I am also considering making all sanding and grinding operations into one dirty room so to speak. I guess I am asking how is this setup working for you currently? Finally, have you done anything to mitigate static spark buildup in the system? I didn't know anything about it until a couple of days ago. Thank you for making this video it has given me a lot to think about and consider and I sure appreciate where you are going with this.

I can see that you got many comments about this video. It was very good and very informative. I would really like to talk to you about the dual camera system. I started a woodturning club in Ashtabula, Ohio and we have a camera system with two large monitors. I’m looking to upgrade our system to dual cameras and would appreciate any info you could supply. If there is a possibility that we could talk via telephone please let me know.

I know some other people have commented on this, but do you think you could add a note to your description that it would be best to ground the piping so that static buildup can be discharged? PVC or ABS dust evacuation systems are notorious for electrical buildup, and for people that use electronically controlled (like the festool variable speed tools) power tools, the shock can damage the tools

yep I had same problem with gorilla glue products , simply the brand stinks, I have tried all the different adhesives they have to offer and I haven't found one that is very good , the wood glue is worthless, use as directed and 3 days later I can break the bond apart by hands alone.

great video, about the pipe by the belt sander. if you put a 45 fitting on the end and that should allow the hose to stay on better, and sticking the hose on should be easier also.

Hi! Why don't use water pipes, they are thicker. I think the shopvap could make more pressure with them. Also there are water gates for water pipes already in the market. They are a bit expensive but is an already made solution.

How's the static electricity build up on that system? I set one up for my dad a couple years ago. Somewhat similar to yours but smaller and we had to end up grounding the PVC to reduce static. I think we were using schedule 80, but that's not going to effect the static.

If you use duct seal tape, not duck-tape, it will help seal the system as we as being useful on your pipe joints. This is a silver tape used on duct work. The system will work much better by sealing off all the little leaks.

Nice video and thanks for sharing your installation insights. I can use a lot of these ideas in my own 2 car garage set up. However, you didn’t talk about the tank looking gizmo mounted on the wall near the dust right vac. Is that a filter of some sort?

Awesome setup. Thanks for sharing. I've been doing research for the better part of a month and the equipment you've chosen are the exact same that I feel offer the best bang for my bucks. I'm not sure if I should go with the Powertech, Shop Fox, or spend the little extra on the Rockler though. A couple questions; do you think that a standard furnace filter could be cut to use as a replacement for the outer filter on the Wen air cleaner? And could you PLEASE do a video on the Vacumaid pro? There aren't any thorough reviews. I really want to get one, but I could get 2 top of the line shop vacs for the $315. Having it off the floor and 30 or 50ft of vacuum hose would be sweet, but is it worth it? Does it provide the same suction as a regular vacuum?

Nice job great system I have one concern you are sucking hot metal from your grinder that could be a possible fire hazard I know with all the wind and pressure that by the time it hits the collection bin the metal would have cooled off but still a bit risky otherwise great system

how do i remove lingering sawdust from a small room? i used a hole saw to make a small hole in a wooden box and the sawdust has been lingering around. it was a small project so i worked on it on the restroom sink counter. now every time i take a shower, the sawdust smell comes out and i can feel the sawdust in my nose and mouth. it only comes out when the shower is started. i've tried vacuuming and thought i got rid of it but its still around..

You put a lot of effort and work into the video and your system. I have the same Rockler vac and it does not generate enough suction to effectively run the pipe system you have - especially with the 90 degree bends you have. In fact it loses strength on a single hose and an Oneda cyclone in between

I find it amusing that he is worried about the difference in friction loss (loss of efficiency due to angles) between a 90 degree connector and two 45 degree connectors but doesn't consider the massive amount of friction loss he is getting from NOT GLUING the pipe together. All those connectors with no glue on them probably add up to an open area about 6" in diameter. Don't believe me? Stick some pipe together and fill it up with water. What he did is fine, and using 45's instead of 90's will make a negligible amount of gain, but take the time to glue the pipe together unless you're gonna be moving and want to take the system apart.

My suggestion for the connecting of the lids on the trash end of the system: coat the other side of the foam tape you used on the underside of the lid, but coat it with contact cement, let dry, also coat the lid it will be installed on, then the two lids will be connected properly and sealed .
