As someone who lives in a small flat, I appreciate the hell out of this! Rather than 40k (and all its IP related nonsense) it might be worth reaching out to the other systems that aren't linked to mini lines, such as OnePageRules or Osprey Games, especially the self-contained games like Zona Alfa or Frostgrave, or the upcoming Stargrave. Turning those sets into something you could make in a weekend and keep in a shoebox would be amazing.

If you're like me and lose track of everything, a nice little color coding system painted around a base can help this immensely. I feel like scale needs to be a more talked about topic. I like DnD, and my idea I've been toying with is making three characters for my two players. One tiny mini for open-world, one regular sized mini for simple dungeon crawling, and one character bust to show off their characters.

Back in the day we made a ‘Pocket 40k’ version using 6mm Epic models that worked surprisingly well and was a lot of fun to create and play with! A few things we discovered that increased quality of life enormously when playing with tiny, individual models: Use a piece of sheet metal as a base for the board and add a small magnet to the base of every model. This isn’t as much work as it sounds, and it completely solves the biggest danger: any small tap to the table knocking over all the models and ruining your game. Secondly, adding a grid field to the ‘table’. Having to use tiny rules to move tiny models tiny distances can get tedious, so having distances integrated into the terrain was a massive help.

I did wonder how long it would be before someone mentioned this excellent scale. Nothing looks like an army quite like 2mm, although I messed up the basing, spreading strips out a little too far. 6mm is a good looking scale. Mine are arranged more shoulder to shoulder, so 6 or 7 X 40mm wide bases form an imposing, unbroken line of battle.
@nidhoggroom
@nidhoggroom 3 жыл бұрын
I think you could make it even smaller, for beginners. You only need 1 miniature for each squad/troop + any hero/banner bearer etc. that accomplices it But the single squad miniature piece is set on top of this modular frame to represent it. The more people in the squad, the bigger the frame. And as you play, you have a turn wheel which lessens the overall frame. The turnwheel can have numbers around it, but the top number defines how many are left in the squad. Turning the turnwheel, it could f.ex be attached to strings to each corner and pull it closer, so that the frame diminishes.

A quick portable table idea is to buy ABS sheets, in the US you can get 12x12 inch sheets in various thickness. These can be glued with, pipe glue, together and to vinyl sheets (think table cloth but thicker). I made a 3x3 foot table top with this idea. I glue 3 of the squares together to make a 3x1 foot section, then glue it to the vinyl sheet making the table 3x3. This lets me fold the table down to a 3x1 for storage or transportation. ABS is very similar to PS so it takes paint or PVA glue quite well.

My only suggestion is how to stop the warping. I have found that the very thin parcel tape (normally brown) has no 'give' in it, along its length. Apply this in strips on the underside in both up and down and horizontal directions. It is very resistant to linear tension and thus prevents cardboard or foam board from warping. Barry

it's really cool to see more people enjoying 10mm kings of war, i've been playing it ever since the counter charge podcast had an episode about small scale gaming a few years back. while i understand there are many practical reasons for small scale minis- it's cheaper, takes less space, etc- for me it's all about feel. i really love the scale and how it looks on the table. very cinematic. one thing i didn't expect was the smaller scale allows some experimentation. for example, we occasionally play games where we increase the range of missle weapons to something closer to real world scales (we also increase the magic ranges too, although i can't really call it "close to real world scale!") this would be all but impossible at 28mm scale on account of size, but for the 10 mili's it's a nice little twist to the game. for those who don't have access to 3d printers i've gotten my minis from magister militum and pendraken. pendrakens warband minis have an amazing amount of variety as far as poses go.

I took a demo game around the shows when Warmaster Ancients came out which used around 2500-3000 figures. Most sets of rules like WH or KoW can be used with an unchanged or downscaled ground scale even if they're written for 28mm. Smaller scales are the only way to get battles that look like battles unless you own a 30 foot table and elastic arms :D

Quite right. If you want the Pelennor Fields to be more than a large lawn, or that row of Mûmakil to look like an impassable wall, go 2mm!

Please do it for 40k! One thing I would do differently: I would have opted for a small ready printed battle mat instead of making a solid board. You even can roll these things nicely up

I love love love tiny scale miniatures, and in a way it kind of kills me that there’s not really a lot of support for playing most tabletop games with anything other than the standard 28/32mm minis. I love what you did here and would definitely be into seeing more videos in the same vein, even exploring how to do higher end terrain like some of your really impressive stuff from the past in smaller scales.

"I don't any terrain..." Bloody hell reality really is falling apart haha Speaking of smaller models, I use smaller scales to test out new systems so I'm not spending loads of money on systems I'm unsure about. 15mm is a pretty good starting point, loads of options and its easy to scale down from 28mm because its basically 1/2 the scale that we're used to for both rules and terrain. Works pretty well for skirmish games as well as they can be played on as small as a 2ftx2ft board to simulate pretty large skirmish maps. Great fun. Speaking on the topic of 40K! I've yet to find anyone who can convince me otherwise that normal 40k rules played with 15mm minis or even 6mm minis on 25mm rounds is not the way! The rules make no sense for firefights and artillery and sniping on such a small board set up for what they are supposed to represent. But at a smaller scale using the same measurements etc. suddenly the idea of rolling up with a basilisk to shell a building makes sense! Okay rant over haha

It would be amazing to see One page rules at 15mm scale. I love the compact size of the smaller scale but its a bit small. I wonder how a miniature would feel at 15mm and if it could be on a single base like a normal 28mm, not a fan of movement trays.

Wow, this video really jazzed me up! I'd love to see this for 40k! Also if you can think of a way to make it work, I would flip my lid if you tried something for 10mm single based unit skirmish games. I've long wanted to be able to have some sort of 12"x12" terrain board and 10mm units for a micro skirmish game that I could have on my desk at work to play during down times or at a lunch table!

Back in the 90's WD had an article where one of the studio members built a travel size 40k using the epic scale minis and a folding battlefied board made of foam core... I wish I could remember (or find) the issue. I had planned on making this, but never got around to it. The concept I had was to make a wooden book-style Box that opened up to reveal a folding double-sided foam core board with grass grass on one side and desert on the other (you could make additional types of battlefield boards and swap them out too) under each side were compartments for two armies and epic-scale terrain. I had concept and blueprints drawn for it, just never got around to building it. If you can get your hands on some epic armies, you can make one. You can actually use foam board, instead of paint and flock, you can use sheets of adhesive velvet sheeting.

200% see you do this for 40k , there is lots of cool 10/15mm scifi 3d files online , seen some really cool ork stuff ... What do you think the ratio would be for working out base sizes? say like abaddon/DP goes on 60mm bases normally, would you just halve all 40k base sizes for 10mm scale .

Gaslands is an AMAZING game and you can play it at any scale, the rulebook talks about it. You can play with micro machine size cars and just 3d print reduced sized movement templates, easy. Making the cars is more fiddly. We've thought before about doing 40k as centimetre instead of inch scale to make a mini version that we could take on holiday, even camping. Good luck with this, it's a good way to go.

Those 10mm units came out quite good, especially for a 2k printer. Nice work! I've always been a big proponent of smaller scale wargames because you can fit so much on the table, including expansive towns and castles, and the scale makes ranged weapons seem more realistic, especially for modern weapons and vehicles (rifles, missles, tanks/artillery, etc). I understand why people like 40K's heroic 32-35mm scale, especially those that love painting detailed models, but I'd kill to see W40K Epic return. :) Edit: oh and storage is SO much easier at this scale, especially the terrain!
