Great video Luke, Personally if you havent £80 to spare or are basically skint , you can buy rolls of material they make teddy bears out of , like a fleece material, reasonably cheap from a fabric shop or even bought online And just glue it to a board ,can cover a massive area in no time, snip bits with scissors to make uneven and touch up with watered down paints, can get like a rough moorland effect This is what I have used for 1/32 scale models ,cheap,effective and quick for massive areas Take care Luke , Gary

I'm in the market for a SGA... was gonna go for a cheapo off eBay. You've probably just saved me from a heap of buyers remorse. I'm in the £50-£100 bracket si I think its between the WWS Micro at £55 or the Green Scene at £80. Anything more is a bit too spendy for me. As you've saved me £25 on buying crap cheapo I should get the Green Scene!

That's what I thought. However, apparently not. I recently watched the WWS video on their layering system and Martyn explained why the probe doesn't need to be in contact with the base. For best results it only needs to be near to the mesh. Recently I've been doing this and it does seem to work great.

Initially I made 1 from a sieve and bug zapper. I found a Static King for $66 usd, I ended up getting the plug for it as well, and having it plugged in, instead of battery powered is a lot better. Homemade 1 worked a little, but actually getting a well made product that works, saves on headaches and allows for a much better experience.

What a fantastic test mate, I did just buy a static grass applicator myself and I am glad that I paid a little more money for one now. The only annoying thing about my version is the applicator is in two parts so I have to hold the handle with the batteries in it and hold down the button. and then the hopper is the second part I have to hold onto and shake for the static grass. And to ground it I would clip it to a nail into the terrain piece. A bit fiddly but it will have to do. Thanks for the vid Luke ^_^.

Great video and the end of it looks like an Ann Summers Party!! 🤣🤣🤣 Joking aside Luke, John’s Green Scenes Applicator is an amazing piece of kit for £80, and coming from a railway modelling background, I’m always pushing this product because it’s great at what it does. Have to agree with you regarding the physical size of it - it’s not the most ergonomic design, but if you can put up with cramp, then it’ll be more than most average modellers need. 👍

Great video; I have the WWS Pro (SN0013 from batch 1) and I've always found it struggled with 6mm however of course this is such an early model (and they even gave me a free upgrade service at one point) that maybe it's now a lot stronger. Mine excels at the lengths I normally work with, up to about 4mm, and gives a great result so I'm very happy with it of course. This does make me want to see the 35KV against the monster, that could tempt me to upgrade. And also, like someone else said, the scrunching of the grass while it's still wet made me wince and cower but daayam it makes the result better so that's a technique I'll be testing out as well. Cheers buddy

Being in a model train club, I've had the chance to use three of these applicators and have built my own from an electronic fly swatter. The Woodland Scenics is my favorite and I seem to get my best results in grasses up to 6mm with it. The cheap one he references that he is going to modify to make work better is a total dud in my mind. It will apply 2 mm grass reasonably well, but struggles with 4 mm and is useless for anything longer. The Noch is the best I've used for the longest grasses I've tried, the 12 mm stuff. Not a lot of use for that length in HO, but it does stand it up nicely. I find the way he waves the ground lead around a bit disturbing. The Noch and the WS work doing it this way, but I feel it degrades the application. I like to firmly have the ground in the surface of the area I'm applying the grass to. You do need to move that ground wire frequently to keep up with your work area. As for my home made applicator, it suffers from one of the problems he describes: the smaller the holes in the screen, the poorer the applicator works. Mine uses a sieve and only can handle 2 mm grass, and poorly at that. I've purchased some rug hooking plastic mesh that I'm going to rebuild that home made unit with to see if I can make it handle longer grasses. One other point here, the applicators that have a closed container for the static grass are generally easier to use because aren't left with the risk of dumping un-intended grass on your work area like the open top ones do. For me. working in HO, I prefer the Woodland Scenics model with the Noch a close second.

Super late to the party, but if you're using a cheaper applicator, it really helps to put a pin in the crocodile clip instead of just touching the clip to the work, and then apply the grass in small areas directly over wherever the pin is touching The clip grounds the work, the mesh gives the grass a static charge. Cheaper applicators don't give the grass quite as strong a charge, so the closer they are to the grounding wire, the better the effect is...and you can ground your work more effectively if you push a pin a little way into it rather than just resting the clip on top.

Why do you 'float' the contact lead over the piece instead of putting it in contact with the glue? I have one of those cheap applicators and, fine mesh limit aside, it works fine, but I put the contact clip in contact with the glue.
@MyklCarlton
@MyklCarlton 4 жыл бұрын
@@GeekGamingScenics The contact lead is the high voltage line. The material collects a charge as it passes through the mesh which is repelled by the voltage at the base, which is why it stands up. An example - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWm0c4eYeJp9f8U
@MyklCarlton
@MyklCarlton 4 жыл бұрын
@@GeekGamingScenics Sorry, I made a silly mistake in my first comment - the connection with the probe or clip on a wire is the ground lead for the ion generator. The high voltage lead charges the mesh, which gives the material the static charge as it passes through. I'm not sure why someone would tell you stuff about magnetic fields - it's just static electrical charges (the 'grass' is a type of plastic, not affected by magnetism). So when you're making a batch of tufts, for instance, you can simply attach the ground lead to a metal tray that your base layer (I use baking paper) sits on. On terrain pieces, they're usually more of an insulator than baking paper so it's easier to just use the liquid glue for grounding the circuit. So - why do the charged grass pieces seem to want to climb to the probe/clip? Because the charge is trying to reach that ground. It's similar to what you see with those plasma balls - the current is 'attracted' to the path to ground that your fingers (or other body part - I don't judge ;)) offer. Why do the pieces of grass stand upright? This may be where the confusion arises. Like charges repel each other, just as like poles repel each other in magnetism. I'm sure you've seen pictures of people with their hair sticking out at all directions when they're connected to a static power source. Their hair stand up because each individual hair is carrying the same charge as the others and they push each other away. You see the same thing with iron filings on a magnet - the piece are attracted to the magnet but push each other away and so stand upright. Sorry for the wall of text, static electricity and magnetism have been interests for over 40 years. Hope the pandemic isn't interfering with your supply chain, you do great products.

I thought you had to touch the electrode to the glue surface to get the little fibres to stick vertically - but you were waving it around mid air! Am I wrong?

Well mate great video and I’m just getting back into terrain and trains plus 40k war gaming and was wondering how the WWS aplacator was to the Woodlands scenic one and I’m sold to the WWS one now and will probably be getting one. Tks again mate for another great video to get me inspired to terrain work.

After watching this video I order the green-scene Flockit from the UK to the US and I wonder if your friend performed any modifications on his. Maybe my static grassing needs more practice but I was a little underwhelmed with how slanted most of my grass stood before vacuuming. Maybe a name-brand battery instead of the one that shipped with it would help. The information that came with the device says there is a power adapter but I can't find it on their site.

@@GeekGamingScenics Thanks for your reply. I only noticed it so late because I came back to this video to review again. I've been using Woodland Scenics static grass so far. I found that 4mm works really well if I work very close to my surface

Great timing Luke. I will be in the market for one of these in the very near future. Although I suspect most of them may not be available here in Australia. Cheers.

@@Seelenschmiede I wish. :) I just checked and it seems they are an American company based in Missouri. Fortunately though their products seem to be easy to get here.

The Woodland Scenics FS639 Static King comes with 3 different sized sieves. Which one did you use and did you try the other two? I need a SGA for flocking gaming bases and was going to go with the Take Cover Terrain one, but the exchange rate and shipping to the US, it's around $60, so $20 less than the WS at ~$80 and free shipping from some places. The Green Scene Flockit looks great, but it's £87.50 or ~$120 + shipping. 🙁
