@@geekinwithJamesHancockThe reason why this film cost only $15 million is because the production company, which until now has only made films with a budget size that could be paid for by domestic market sales alone, only offered a low budget, and the creators worked hard with low salaries. Japanese creators have never gone on strike. The reason why there were many naval battle scenes in this film is that there was an episode in which young staff members voluntarily created CG of the sea, and the director was so impressed that he increased the number of sea scenes. Thus, the Japanese film industry is supported by the volunteer activities of the staff and the low-paid environment.

Kurosawa is my favorite director of all time because he was so great at making universal stories that were still distinctly Japanese. I lived in Japan for several years, i have nothing but love and respect for their culture and people, so to see something as beautiful and praised as Godzilla Minus One come out, it brings me so much joy. The timeframe this movie took place in with its very realistic reflections on how Japan waged WWII hits hard.

Thank you for your prompt review. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think "minus one" has multiple meanings, but I thought about it in my own way. One of them is, as shown in the first trailer (Toho, English subtitles for the Japanese version), a Japan that has been reduced to nothing due to atomic bombs, air strikes on cities, and war. To cause further destruction there and bring it into a more serious negative state. Another reason is that this work is set earlier than the 1954 original. Is it because it can be considered? And while the position of the best "Godzilla movie" goes to the 1954 original, this one ranks one step lower than that, in other words, in the second position! This may be an expression of the creators' intentions. This is not a reboot of the original, but a new interpretation. Also, various reactors have commented that the way Godzilla walks is visually stiff, but this is based on the way Godzilla walks in the first generation and original. This is because it is inspired by the Japanese classical performing art Noh. Godzilla walks solemnly, with divine dignity, as if in some kind of ritual. From a Japanese perspective, Godzilla is an angry god, and he is not just a giant lizard, but a divine dragon-like “KAIJU.” Also, the reason why the men on the ship salute is because Godzilla is an angry, cursed divine beast inhabited by the souls of soldiers who died in the war. I'm not good at English, so I'm using Google Translate. I hope it's working properly. Sorry for the long comment.

I'm a Japanese Godzilla fan. I watch the video using Google Translate and write my impressions. As I said, it was a masterpiece. I am very happy that the American people appreciate it. Personally, what's really great about it is that the previous Godzillas fulfilled the criteria of being "strong and cool." However, this time Godzilla is "strong, cool, and very scary." Even though I'm a Godzilla fan, all I could think was "Go home early!" (lol) Godzilla, who doesn't kill while moving, but comes with the intention of killing, was terrifying. In the scene of destruction in Ginza, which is also my address, I felt despair (lol) Lastly, the human drama was also wonderful. I didn't spend the time just to earn time, but it was a meaningful time. I would like to say that this is not only the No. 1 Godzilla movie, but also the top of all past movies. I can recommend it even if you are not a Godzilla fan. I hope that Godzilla Minus One will be a hit in America as well. Thank you for the positive review

@les4767 Жыл бұрын
Sure, the Godzilla action is top tier, but what really makes this film great is the human drama. This would've been a great film even if Godzilla wasn't even in it. Those characters in that gritty and very real post war period setting were really compelling to watch. You get so invested in these people you want to see given their redemption arcs. That's what makes many Godzilla films just bubblegum entertainment-goofy human characters that are little more than comic relief. The characters of Minus One have comic moments, but they're played seriously and feel real to life. However, this film also has GODZILLA in it and it all makes for a magnificent film going experience.

Just caught the movie tonight. Easily top 10 of 2023. Very satisfying. Loved the soundtrack when Godzilla is on his rampage and the sound effects when he uses his atomic blast! And so many shot looking from below to really show the scale. This is not going to make a lot of money in US, but see it in the biggest screen with the best sound possible! I enjoyed the US made Godzilla movie, but this is so different and better. We don’t need a mega budget or bunch of monsters to make a cool Godzilla movie. This is proof a smaller movie with good script and decent special effects can be equally or a better movie. Spoiler talk… I loved that when they detonated the 2nd to last bomb, they cut all the sounds. It is so effective and contrary. They also did that during the First Slam Dunk movie in the final minutes of the game. I wanted to cheer when the pilot showed up at the end. It was not a surprise, but still very gratifying to see.

As a Toho Godzilla fan, I liked Godzilla vs Kong best of the American trilogy because it felt very much in line with the late 60s Godzilla movies. In Godzilla vs Monster Zero humans lend him and Rodan to aliens on Planet X so they can fight King Ghidora. The whole movie takes place on that planet and people have laser guns and it’s ultra sci fi camp, much like Kong vs Godzilla. It was stupid sure - hollow earth and crazy sci fi tech - but at one hour and thirty minutes it got in and got out quickly with lots of good monster brawls. Hollywood seems capable of making a fun campy kaiju film based on Kong Skull Island and Godzilla vs Kong. I’ve yet to see them demonstrate a capacity to utilize Godzilla to deliver a serious film the way that only Toho and artists living the Japanese perspective can. I absolutely adored Minus One. It had such an optimistic message to send but it handled the monster scenes flawlessly. Easily the best camera work I’ve ever seen in a Godzilla film. It was incredibly exciting to watch and there were so many novel shots.

Im glad you enjoyed, as a lifelong hardcore kaiju fan since I was very young, and i am hoping to see it Saturday evening or night with my mom, she knows i have been wanting to watch this movie so bad and hopefully my dad can send her money for the tickets, I have been building up hype for over a year and hearing all the praise its getting even adds to it, tbh it really sounds like this movie will be up there with movies Oppenheimer and with alot of movies being poorly recieved this year, this movie really sounds like a breath of fresh air, it probably won't make as much as Beyonce's Renaissance but personally I think this movie will definietly be better than Renaissance, because Renaissance is just a concert in the form of a movie but this is an actual movie for starters plus from what I hear about how good the story and characters are plus Godzilla himself being an absolute rageful monster out for blood, really sounds like Takashi hit the nail here with making a Godzilla movie that not only takes inspiration from other films but also strongly brings back the reminiscence of Gojira 54, like the post war setting honestly makes everything even more interesting because it adds a new story element, what would happen if Godzilla were to appear right towards the end of the war and in the aftermath of World War 2? The country and Nation of Japan is at its lowest, thousands of civilians are in poverty, they lost their homes, their families, and their country is now at its lowest it could have ever been following the bombs, but now a titanic massive behemoth of a creature who was also affected by that very war rises, this kaiju is furious and radioactive, he wants vengeance, and he is out for blood at the same time this very kaiju, born from the ashes of war is now targeting you, whatever family you have left that also survived, people whom you cherish the most, friends and neighbors and your crumbled country, your nation now at its lowest, almost all weapons have been used during the war, how will the country defend itself against in such a deadly horrifying life or death situation? Against such a massive creature so full of rage that and anger that You, your family and loved ones, and everyone are all now in danger, The war already took a massive toll on Japan, Godzilla shows up and now shit is really gonna hit the fan and its gonna hit hard as hell.

I had given up on this year in movies, just nothing really spoke to me, but then I saw When Evil Lurks and now what I'm hearing about Minus One is really going to turn the year around for me. It's crazy what happens when creative people that give a crap about what they are doing are allowed to do their jobs. All the people at the mega studios could easily do this and support projects like this, but nobody cares. It's going to be exclusively indie movies and foreign releases for quality genre movies for the foreseeable future, and that is probably the best case scenario. I'm glad to hear that the original score is back, it's one of the greatest of all time and even all these years and movies later it still doesn't get the love it deserves. Can't wait to see this.

I wouldn't even say that this is necessarily for Godzilla die hard fans, the only other movie in the franchise that really resembles this one is the original. If anything, I think it's more for people who like the original, but don't like the direction it went after that. I feel like it's a movie for new Godzilla fans where you can say "See how awesome that was? You don't even need to worry about the previous movies, just watch the original and hopefully the sequels to this movie".. If anything, I would say something like Godzilla vs Kong is closer in tone to the rest of the franchise after the original because they really just became shallow, silly monster battles.

The biggest problem with Godzilla movies from Hollywood is that they're written as disaster movies, which is why the human characters are one-dimensional at best. However, Godzilla films made by TOHO are written with the interpretation of the director and/or screenwriters of what the monster is and the metaphors, themes, and ideas based on when the story was written. In a weird way, Godzilla for Japan is to Batman for Hollywood. The 1954 Godzilla film showed the audience a Godzilla as a physical manifestation of the consequences of using atomic weaponry, especially for civilians. Shin Godzilla shows the audience a Godzilla that's a physical manifestation of the consequences of a nuclear meltdown, as well as criticising the slow response by the Japanese government when it came to the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Godzilla Minus One goes back to its roots but through a different interpretation.

If this is the kind of Godzilla you like, try Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. Both have the take no prisoners attitude you'd appreciate and the scores are great.

$15M? That’s nothing. It looks much more expensive from the trailers. We have tickets for Sunday.

Agreed. It looks like a $100 million film. Creativity and imagination will always surpass bloated budgets for uninspired franchises.

I am a devotee of HORRIFIC Godzilla! 1954 Gojira, Shin Godzilla now this... Godzilla is not humankind's 'spirit animal'🙄

Godzilla 2014 was such a good set up. A very believable and relatable universe. But then they started doing all this hollow earth bs. Some many cool things they could've done but they choose the easy way out.

It is a shame, but Beyoncé will not be denied this weekend. She will make a lot more money than Godzilla. I was able to catch an early Wednesday night viewing on a fake IMAX. The sound is great when Godzilla does his thing with his theme song and the explosions! It’s what Oppenheimer should be…. 😂. Go out of your way if there is an AMC Dolby or Prime or Regal 4DX.

I lucked out with a decent-sized screen but I'm very jealous of the folks getting to see it in IMAX.

On the note of 1940's technology, believe it or not, the Shinden fighter was a real plane that Japan couldn't bring into service in time to turn the tide of the war. They were designed to stop the B-29's which flew higher than any other fighters of the day, and only 2 were ever built. However, ejection seats weren't even thought of back then, those came in the 50's with the proliferation of jets. So that was kind of a misstep technically speaking. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyushu_J7W_Shinden

@geekinwithJamesHancock Жыл бұрын
It wasn't the changes that kept me at a distance because at that point I think I had only seen Godzilla 1985. I just struggle with Emmerich's style in the general. Independence Day is his only movie that I've felt like watching for a second time.

great review! Godzilla minus one was amazing! such a excellent movie for such a low budget of only $15 million. the Us should be ashamed making movies that are 100-200 plus million dollar blockbusters and they are utter shit. this movie has it all! great human characters, CGi is beautiful, action and everything!
