Wonderful observation. Strictly philosophically, is it better to be a Crozier, a Fitzjames, a Blanky, a Goodsir, or a Hickey in that respect?

FitzJames went full Arnie with the rockets, and as for that little touch where Blankey stuck loads of forks to himself before the creature comes for him... nice touch.

Scurvy wasn't the primary issue; it was lead poisoning and botulism.
@neuralmute
@neuralmute 6 жыл бұрын
I've been following all the archaeology going on around the Franklin Experdition, particularly since the ships were found, and bones found at all the Franklin camps showed definite signs of scurvy. It may not have been the sole cause of death; starvation, lead poisoning, tuberculosis, and botulism all played parts as well, but there were a lot of people who died out there. Interestingly enough, the most recent research has shown that their lead poisoning was perhaps not as widespread or catastrophic as was previously believed. Analysis of the bones of the English urban poor from the same time period has revealed lead levels nearly as high as those found in the bones of the Franklin crew. Remember - they had no idea how toxic lead was back then, and used it for everything, right down the pipes that everyone in London was drinking their water from...

You left out Goodsir washed himself w the poison too. His skin absorb some of it and then dried on his upper dermus. Also he made the comment to capt Cozier " there is much beauty here" and on his moment of death he had colorful visions of beautiful things. Not sure if they did it on purpose but it seemed black and white at times, the bleakness of the environment devoid of color. Good revue.

Couldn't agree more. The Terror was one of my favorite TV experiences this year as well. Even though it was a tale of high seas adventure, which I love, its narrative progressed in a totally unpredictable way. Coupled with some fantastic performances, it's an extraordinarily compelling piece of television. If any more Dan Simmons books are adapted by AMC, I will surely be watching. Thanks once again for the great review!

This was deliberately ambiguous based on first hand accounts. The Inuits described a man as having chains attached to his face. The show creators wanted to use as many of these first hand accounts as possible, even if they were ambiguous and without explanation.

He pierced his face for the same reason that the doctor lit himself on fire and Hickey tried to appease the Tuunbaq. They became disconnected from reality due to "reasons". The Tuunbaq isn't the only native "spirit" in this story. When Lady Silence saw the butchered corpse of Goodsir, she was more worried about the sailors becoming wendigo-like beings. The pantomime she does where she gestures the entire expedition will be devoured is a reference to the Tuunbaq and the wendigo. Even Captain Crozier devours his past self (pride) to survive at the end.

Good review... but they also were suffering from lead poisoning. The water tanks on the ship, although the most technically advanced for its day, they were made of lead or sealed with lead. The food tins were also sealed with lead. I had numerous problems with the depiction of their journey. The ships had an amazing variety of extraneous stuff... costumes, huge library etc... they also seemed to squander their resources constantly. Most of the men were clean shaven for the whole voyage. They also spent a very long time outdoors with no hats, thin garments. The arctic is damn cold even in summer. They always had tent flaps open with total disregard for the cold. We only saw one case of frostbite and the doctor amputated one little toe. I saw no complaints of the bitter cold. That took me out of the story. Overall I enjoyed it but the flaws bothered me.

Amazing show. Beautifully shot, but it's the visceral reality of the characters that make it so good. Dr Goodsir was exactly that, but I couldn't help remember the actor playing a joyfully sadistic torturer/assasin in a UK series "Utopia" (and I thoroughly recommend that series - it's a crime it only got 2 seasons).

I haven't read the novel, but it seems from some discussions with those who have, in some aspects the narrative in the film is better than in the book. The finale is much more touching in the film. The narrative on Hickey is also more plausible in the film. Anyway, probably it's a matter of mere taste.

Good review, James; I read the book, loved it, but the ending was altered somewhat for the TV show, and maybe that was because the book's ending worked well on a printed page, but might not have been as satisfying on TV. I'm not complaining, the final showdown with the creature was as good, and as terrifying, as anything you will see in the movies. And do pick up a Dan Simmons book, especially Summer of Night, you won't be disappointed.

I started watching the show after seeing this, so thank you for turning me on to this show. Really good. Almost as frightening as the two real-life accounts I've read of 'rounding the Horn'. I can't imagine trying to live in the cold conditions in this show without any modern tech . Think of the sailors trying to sail in freezing weather with gale force winds making zero progress for months, the ropes they often have to climb up and down all iced up, and .... I shiver just thinking about it.

For what it's worth, my favourites are The Abominable, which feels like the start of Terror - Mt. Everest, but then becomes an entirely different animal, apart from the survival horror aspect, and The Fifth Heart, in which Henry James meets Sherlock Holmes in Paris, while Holmes is having a rather serious existential crisis, having deduced that he is, in fact, a fictional character. It just gets better from there, and of course, Mark Twain has the best lines. ;)

In a smeagol-ish sort of way yes. It also had a more pronounced neck and limbs compared to an actual bear, suggesting it was almost half man; the cruelty it showed when arranging severed heads or dead men on the ship in earlier episodes implies more human intelligence.

Awesome show, but I don't quite understand the ending. How did Mr. Hicky know to cut off his tongue in an attempt to tame the Tumbach (sp)? Why did such a huge creature die so quickly of poisoning when the smaller poisoned men survived much longer? Was the doctor ultimately trying to poison the creature? Did Francis and lady Silence have a kid at the end and why didn't he want to be found by the rescue party? Captain's survivor guilt? Shunning western civilization?

So, Season One rather than limited series? Does this mean a Season Two or not? There doesn't seem to be anywhere left to go with this story. Also, they may have found the Northwest Passage, but with the possibility of being trapped in ice with no thaw the next year, it doesn't seem to be all that useful as a trade route.

Point of interest... had the expedition gone round the other side of the island, they might have escaped the trap in the first place. Season One does sound a bit silly with the whole crew gone. The only way to follow up would be with the rescue expeditions, or possibly John Rae or McClintock’s landbased expeditions years later. But without the increasing onset of dread, the creature and the mystery of what happened, it could never achieve the same effect.

Well, not all the crew were accounted for... and what remains were found can’t be labelled as one member or another. Although there is an almost “Holy Grail” like wish to see if any legible documents can be recovered from the newly discovered wrecks of the Erebus and Terror themselves... but you’d expect the Captains or their successors to take the log with them when they abandoned the ship, since it is for the ship’s company and not just the vessel itself...

I must correct you on something, though: throurought the series, they made it very clear that scurvy wasn't the primary issue: lead poisoning was. They repeated all the time "it's not scurvy, it's something else", and Mr. Goodsir used the monkey as a subject to prove it. The blue line on the gingivas is called Burton's line, a typical lead poisoning sign.

The same way that speaking French does not make you a Frenchman. Culture is way more layered than language is.

It seems that King William Island in those years had almost no wildlife, so there was nothing for the crews to hunt. It takes years to learn how to hunt seal. The English crews didn't understand the Inuit, like most colonialists, they saw them as inferior

Botulism alone would have been enough; it’s been suggested that the lead levels were not unusual for the period in question (eg lead in most plumbing pipes etc).

I don’t think there will/ could be a second series. The story has already played out.

As one who has read the book and done independent research on the real expedition, I found the show dragged along. I so wanted the ending to match the hopeful one from the book.

The most recent analysis of bones left by the Franklin Expedition members shows that they were sick and crazy from both, as well as tuberculosis, starvation, botulism, and hypothermia.

The show is not made for Americans m8. It wouldnt be a success. The fact that you complain for the release date says a lot on its own lol. You didnt even noticed that the main thing in the show was led poisoning and not scurvy. I mean that attention span is amazing..What were you doing when they were explaining it. Waiting for the bear to appear lol?
