Why Do I Love the BMW R1150 GS Adventure - as used in Long Way Round?

2003 R1150GS found it on eBay , flew up to Seattle on a spirt airline $ 65.00 flight with a 2 hour lay over in Vegas , with my helmet as my carry-on , took a Uber to Carmichael where I met the seller , he had the bike in a garage all to it self , he didn't use it for commuting just his touring , he had aced the abs , stickerss on the two aluminum hard cases , up graded the suspension , and I walked around the bike , listening to him talk about what he up graded and where he had gone , he was moving to Florida and the cost of shipping it , was to much , I saw his pics of the places he had gone , and I didn't even try to bargain with him on the price , I just laid out the $ 4,800.00 on his toll box and listened to the rest of his talk for the next hour , he stoped and asked me didn't I want to hear it run before I laid the $ money down , and I just smiled , said I didn't have to as his story and how that bike was stored in that garage said everything , I rode it back to Los Angeles. it was mid December two years ago , jeans , flannel shirt , a great leather motor cycle jacket , about 1/2 way , midnightish , close to Bakersfield , My knees turned into rock , and my finger tips were numb , I found a motel 8 , and well I now have a pair of real nice thermals and motorcycle pants and a set of gloves Santa would die for 😎

I sold my 1200 GS LC in 2020 and bought again a 1150 GS Adventure, now 18 years old and still a pleasure to ride ….

Can I ask you why you changed from a 1200 gs back to a 1150 gs? I am contemplating between the both. Thanks in advance

@@samhovens1914 hi Sam, i had problems with my clutch, e.g. driving into a small village changing from gear 3 to 2 my engine stopped suddenly. I like the comfort of the 1150 GS Adventure (no plastic) and the reliabilty of everything.

I did the same thing. Sold my 2016 GSA 1200 and bought a good condition 2002 1150 GSA. I love it.

still got mine. 2005 R1150GSA. Black and yellow. At times I think of selling it because I ride my other bikes, then comes a day like today, after Ive gone thru the bike, flushed the systems, new tires, and after a couple of days on the bike, its character reminds me of why its so special. I find myself "at home".

I sold my 2000 R1150 GS 4 years a go because I had other bikes to ride, I been craving for another one finally I bought one 2004 last week.

I bought a 2003 1150 ADVent with 6010km at the end of 2005 to ride to Iceland as a couple in 2006. Since then I've also been to Great Britain, Norway, Poland, . . It now has 184,000 kilometres on the clock. It stays.

I know my GS1150 Adv. I mean really know it. Such that if it needs servicing or fixing I can do it with spanners and tape. I don’t need a laptop.

Absolutely 100% agree. Had mine 23 years and the other canbus BMWs I've bought in the meantime have been and gone.

Bought my 1150GS in Feb 2000. Still got it. Many other more modern, more expensive and "better" bikes have been and gone.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I bought my '00 1150 GS from a friend - but I dare say I think it's ruined a lot of other bikes for me. I've got a lightly used 1250 incoming currently, but the stalwart 1150 isn't going anywhere! Also, I recently did the 1200 injector upgrade and AF-XIED module and all I can say is WOW.

Still have my 2002 GSA. Bought it brand new. It has the non servo ABS brakes.
