I have an 1150 GSA with 236k on it. Original engine. The Transmission and final drive lasted 190k miles. I also have a Tenere 700. I like the 150lb ish weight savings. But will always have a GS - Currently I own 4 from a 1990 to a 2012.

​​@@bfeadventures for me the big value of GS (2010/2012) is the DOHC VERSION of engine. i had a SOHC engine and there is not comparision. For me and for a lot of persone is the BETTER BOXER of ever. Better of LC too. And this is the reason of the highest price of air oil engine. In italy a DOHC with 80000kms costs more then 11000 EURO.

Don't have a GS anymore (I owned an 1150 years ago), but I have a 2013 R1200 R. I absolutely LOVE it. It currently has 28,000 miles on it and runs like new. Very easy to work on and maintain yourself.

I have the identical model GeeEssA. Bought new in 2010. It now has 120k km on the clock (75 K miles) without any major hassles. Living in South Africa my bike has toured extensively off road without any problems. I have a set of aluminium side cases, and made custom use of an original 1150 gs top case which looks fantastic. Like you mentioned I have had the fuel strip replaced 5 times. BMW paying for three of them. Never had any major problem as I service my bike every 5000 kays. The prop shaft was serviced at 100k km, replaced the seals. Currently in for service where the steering bearing and sleeve is being replaced as I found a slight play back and forth in the handle bar. One of the most overlooked replacement is the knuckle attaching the front forks to the paralever. Check that this is tight and the rubber bushing not perished. The bike was the last model before the introduction of the “liquid cooled” 1250 gs. Many of the mechanics at BMW confess that our bike is still the best one made. Yes, the new ones have all the bells and whistles, tft, serious computing and general updates, but just remember when riding with your mate on the latest GeeEss that you will both arrive at the same time! Only he has cruise control - damn!

cruise control is achieved when your handle grip heaters fail (which they will) you replace with aftermarket ones (heaps easier than fixing the dry joint they seem to get in the body control module that causes the failure) when putting the new grips on you just make them sligthly tighter on the throttle twist and it gives the throttle a slight bit tension allowing the throttle to stay where you leave it, if you dont let it snap back initially, and there you now have criuise control just like your mate. i have 2011 gs1200, just clicked over 105 000 miles and still going like a champion. apart from servicing, only major repair has been a gear box, the old girl sent second gear straight out through the side of the cases, leaving a hole about an inch and half across. it was slow after that, but the old girl still got me the 130 miles to home, albeit with a few stops to add some more gear oil and wipe the ejected gear oil off of my leg. best bike i have ever owned

2010 yellow GSA, I have had for well over three years, moderate off-roading, some long trips, the NEBDR, etc. No real issues, very durable, comfortable for up to 7 to 9 hour rides. Fuel range is easily 340-380mi, depending on speed, tires, terrain, riding style. I ride with Mosko Moto soft luggage panniers, and upgraded Tractive shocks (extreme variant on rear). Added bark busters and a kaoko throttle lock. I can do just about any terrain a 650 or larger bike can do, obviously taking into account the ~530 lb mass. I have this GS(A) and a KTM 350 excf, and surprisingly I don’t miss anything in between those two. Not tempted by upgrades. Good bike!

Thank you for making this video. I like your style and I share your GS passion. Well done Sir. I owned the same 2011 in gray. Agree with you re road manners. I sold in year 2018 in favor of a 2019 1250gs. Inwish I had kept it. I think the older “adventure” model is among the most utilitarian, beautiful of motorcycles. The reason I sold….i wanted to “flat foot” my bike. Now I can. But I still miss my 2011. I appreciate your thoughtful content.

I really like the RT and it was low mileage, but the BMW reliability (or I should say the BMW dealership service departments) issues scared me away. Love my 2009 GS Bought it with 24k miles and put 9k miles on it. Bulletproof. No repairs at all. Just good maintenance and go. It can go to 136mph on the highway, then get beat up in the dirt, and keep going.

I have a 2007 GSA and, for my needs and wants, there's not another bike that even comes close to the rugged refinement, comfort and performance. I've had several bikes throughout the years including an 2001 Sportster with 235,000 miles on the odometer, so I'm not green. It's a shame that many folks will never get to experience this kind of performance due to their close mindedness. I purchased my 2007 GSA three years ago for $4,500.

Hey! I have a similar problem getting my bike out of neutral. As you depress the shift lever, lightly let off the clutch and it'll lock into gear. Works every time.

Hi, Great Video and I really enjoyed it. I Ride a 2006 R1200GS that I Traded s Harley for. I’ve had it a couple of Years now and No Problems at all. No Oil Leaks, everything works perfect, and it Rides like a New One. I have Ridden Bikes for 50 Yrs and this is the best Bike I have ever Ridden. No Electronics to worry about, I just get on and go. I have 4 Fusions in my Neck and 2 in my Lower Back. I also have Scoliosis which is curvature of the Spine. The GS is the only Bike I can Ride and not hurt. I love it.👍👍

The GS is so comfortable I don’t hurt at all. I also don’t feel any Heat coming from the Engine. You won’t regret getting a GS. You’ll have to Test Ride one and see what you think.

i also have to move my bike just a tiny bit and it will go out of neutral easily. I believe it is how the gearbox works, it took me some time also to do smooth shifts between 1st and 2nd gear, however now it feels just natural to me.

The leak on the balance shaft is a issue. But if you are very careful about the amount of oil you put in and check it correctly that will help lesson the issue. Also I have a 05 and have had the bike apart twice and did the seals twice. BMW dealer I talked to said to install those seals with a small dab or RTV sealant on the case where they come together. That pretty much will solve your oil leak issue.

Hey there. I have a 2010 GSA and just noticed for the first time a bit of oil on the skid pan. It's coming from the back of the motor for sure. I think I may have overfilled it a little while back and was assuming this was the issue. But now I'm hearing (in this video) of the common problem of a leak. I just picked up my (new to me) 2016 GSA. Unfortunately in red, but the 12k price tag more than makes up for that! 35k miles on the clock, all services done at the local dealership. This is my 2nd GSA. Approx 75% street/long distance touring. 25% gravel, forest access roads. I haven‘t done anything hard off-road, the GSA is a bit too heavy for my skill level.

This video was served up in my feed, so yay to the algorithm! Dude, I'm a new rider who said "screw it" and bought a used '05 GS with 43K on it for $5K. Had a new pair of K60 scouts and a pair of spoked wheels with it (along with the stock cast wheels and road tires). I've done paved country roads and gravel/dirt fire roads with it constantly over the last year and EVERY time I ride it I want to hug it. It is the stablest, surest, most comfortable bike. Its low center of gravity helps breed confidence with a new rider like me. Fortunately I'm tall (6'2") so the bike, while heavy, doesn't feel small to me-especially when up on the pegs. I learned to service it myself, totally tore it down with a GS expert nearby who taught me the ropes so its mechanical systems aren't that intimidating to me. I'm telling you, this video is 100% accurate. The value you can get out of a used GS-even one as old as mine-is incredible. Sure, there are other bikes that make SOME aspects of ADV riding easier, and sure, there are nightmare scenarios you could encounter on one of these where picking the damned thing up all by yourself would be pretty miserable. But just take a look at the GS Trophy videos and tell me this bike isn't any more capable than some of its more "off road" oriented brethren...hogwash...it can do WAY more than most riders will ever push it through. If you're on the fence, don't be.

Got the exact same model and even colour but mine is made in 2010. I had to have the fuel strip changed. Didn't cost much. I have ridden it for three years now and never had any other problem. My gear box doesn't cause me any problems actually although it is a little bit clunky but no problem really. I am sure the more recent BMW´s are even better but still, it is an amazing bike and you get an awful lot for your money if you find a slightly older bike in really good shape. I absolutely love my 1200GS!

I decided to check out the BMW GS 1200GSA after reviewing the adventure bike reviews on youtube and in the major bike magazines. I decided on the BMW. I found a 2016 R1200GSA with 48K miles. One owner and that person purchased the bike at the dealership where it was being sold. He traded it in for a newer GS. I had all the service records at that dealer to review and unfortunately I was unable to get the owners name at that time. The bike just had a service at 48K. I purchased the bike and have been working on it off and on since Oct of 2020. I have 54K on it now and I am happy with what has been done to it and everything is working as it should except for the gate/valve in the exhaust pipe located just before the muffler. Once this valve starts to bind it is very hard to correct properly. I have worked on this at 2 different times and I finally decided to pull the cables from it so the servomotor can still move freely and the valve is at the open position as to not impede exhaust flow. The valve was put in place mainly for exhaust noise tuning. The torque loss at a particular rpm range is negligible. I also installed a plexiglass viewing window during troubleshooting. I love this bike and have not done any extreme off-roading with it. Mainly paved roads. I do most of all the servicing and decided to have dealer do valve adjustments. Every valve had to be adjusted and a rocker shaft had to be replaced. Sorry about being long winded but just wanted you to know, I would buy one again after doing the proper research on prior servicing. I believe the past owner did not have the valves adjusted at 48K because of the cost. If I heard valves tapping when I purchased it I probably would have done it then. But it is done now and ready for world touring!

Doing the valve clearances with shims is fiddly but doable for the home mechanic as long as you have a micrometer . I only had one to replace made a note of the shim size for future reference . They are more reliable than screw and locknut adjustment though .

Nice video. I rented a 2008 R1200GS in Australia a few years ago, it had 140000km (87500 miles) on it and it was a rental bike that had probably been dropped over a hundred times over the years (it had many scars)...and it felt like a brand new bike, from brakes to suspensions, to engine it was flawless. With that said I've seen one of these having it's clutch replaced...and the bike basically has to be completely disassembled to make it happen. I had a 2018 RNineT and it was taking 1L of oil per 10000km...and BMW said anything under 4L per 10000km was within specs...which is pretty insane on a modern bike. Valves are easy to check but the maintenance schedule is ridiculously high. Then you can find many having driving shaft failures at 100000km (60000miles). ABS modules and electronic suspensions are extremely expensive to fix on the later models. Super comfortable, fun bike, but I wouldn't consider it as my own for the reasons mentioned above.

Shaft failure isn't as common if maintained decently. ABS only up to 2007 a prob. Clutch around 100K Km/60k miles - terrible repair. Rust on subframe may be a problem atleast 2013 and younger. My 2011 uses 800ml-1000ml every 10000km as well. Suspension is to be maintained at a specialist around 260€ per demper if you take them off the bike yourself, every 5-7 yrs or 60K km. 2014 and up are around 370 per demper. Expensive and not really possible to maintain yourself. Make sure to check if you still have damping, harder to feel up front. Maintenance is easy to do yourself on this bike, reason I got it myself. Also: exhaust valve will cease. If you work it often it ll remain working. I gave up and decoupled the cables in the module closest to the engine, not the exhaust itself. On 2014 and up it is fully connected. Pre 2013 you can disconnect it from the exhaust system if wished for. In 'idle' mode it stays open

@@protectork9831The Clutch is up front on the newer models, so it’s a lot easier to Repsir if ever needed. On the older Models, the Clutch is at the back of the Motor. So you have to pretty much remove or Pivot the rear Frame up to get to the Clutch.

Excellent résumé. One of my worries would be, for example, if the rear shock goes, it's about 3 and a half grand to replace it .

As far as getting it out of neutral- have you tried applying a little downward pressure on the gear shifter while simultaneously letting go of the clutch slightly? That usually works on BMWs!

2010 onwards BMW reverted to the old float fuel gauge so it isn`t a problem anymore . 2010-2013 twin cam motor from the HP2 is the best air/oil cooled motor with 110hp . Regreasing the shaft splines at 10k miles is a good idea if you use it off road and you might get a little corrosion on the front engine cover if you use it in the winter .otherwise a great solid fun characterful long term 2nd hand buy . twin cam motors are the best , did I allready say that ?

Purchased a 1150 GS a few years past, it had 26000 miles on and a great bike. Returning from Arizona to northwest through Nevada on 2 lane and stopped for fuel and I side the clerk told me my bike was being mess with. Look and 3 Harley riders poured gas on it and burned. I like this GS as it did have the electronic strapping on it. Never was able to locate another low mileage one.

Never again a BMW for me. My 2008 1200GS (95000 km~ 62000mi) had for the second ! time ABS pump failure( new €1500 ) And Final drive failure ( second hand one for €900)+ labor + yearly inspection/ maintenance. Payed nearly € 3000. It had regular service at the dealership since new and no off road driving. I bought it second hand a few years ago at the dealership. My conclusion: quality far below par, repair costs far above. It's a fine ride though.

I honestly couldn’t tell you on the weight. I’m sure the manufacturers wet weight is close, but ultimately- loaded weight depends on what you are bringing.

Just split my gs it’s a big job to replace the seals ,if you do it do the main seal balance shaft seal and the input and output gearbox seals +clutch. Trust me you only want to do it once .

I'm considering a 2013 or 2014 r1200gs myself versus a 2022 Kawasaki klr 650 for a second motorcycle to start doing some offroad riding on it like gravel and fire service roads and eventually the mid Atlantic bdr that starts about a hour away from me. I have ridden both the new klr and two 2017 bmw r1200gs so I know how both bikes ride . But I torn to Kawasaki because of the cheaper price? What you're opinion and what would you choose.

If you are not getting into anything more aggressive than gravel roads and occasional double track, I think you will find value in the BMW. I have also owned a KLR. It is a very reliable steed. I will say though as I progress through motorcycles, I now see the value in the higher price tag in many cases. If this is only going to be a secondary motorcycle, do you mind me asking what your primary bike is? That may help me give you a better opinion.

Heya! I have owned a KLR myself, sold a few months ago because of work from home and haven’t been riding it much. My 2c, the KLR will be brilliant if you are going to be doing some heavy off roaring because of its weight. The GS is obviously heavier and bigger and higher! The only downside to the KLR is that it is very slow in terms of its top speed.

My 2012 will cut out sometimes if I blip the throttle kinda hard from idle or when downshifting. There is a fuel pump recall I need to have done, but I’m not that worried about it.

you're totally true...driving the same bike! 2 things: true, it can be hard to get it in gear...before I had the 1150...at the trafficlights I would never put it in neutral...sometimes I had to kick it into gear!!! In dutch we say: it's pretty grumpy mortorblock. People who drive this the first time think it will fall apart...haha. With the 1200 I got less problems...saying that..it happens sometimes. Fuel strip: strange, when I bought it, it was totally unreliable, but after a couple of fill ups, it totally worked perfect. I only drive the motor, don't own a car. On the other hand I heard stories that people had it repaired....very costly, like everything on a BMW...love your vid.

Hey there. I have a 2010 GSA and just noticed for the first time a bit of oil on the skid pan. It's coming from the back of the motor for sure. I think I may have overfilled it a little while back and was assuming this was the issue. But now I'm hearing (in this video) of the common problem of a leak. Any way you could elaborate a bit on what might be causing it. Would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks

Hey, Jim! Honestly, it's been a while since that issue, so I don't remember exact details. That sounds almost exactly how it shows up. There are 2 leaks that show oil in the same spot. One is about a $7 fix and the other is a few hundred dollar fix. The problem is the whole bike needs to be split in half to determine which one it is and THAT is where the big money comes in - the labor...

I ride motorcycles all my life I’m 63 I had Hondas kawasakis Yamaha and never have problems I said it’s time to get a bmw and did it now I have the 2010 Adventure 30 anniversary and was disappointed in the beginning, start to burn oil, strap sensor for fuel, now after 9k when I seriously think on sale it, everything works fine so I’m going to keep it, to much electronics is the key to stay away for issues

It happens to me exactly ,I have 2010 30 anniversary, start to burn oil and fuel sensor change it few times under garantie, and when think of sale , everything works fine so I keep it, I have a 2002 fz1 with 62000 miles never got a mayor issue

The fuel strip issue will be covered by BMW for bikes up to 12 years old so have your friend check into it.

Honestly - miles are arbitrary- I think it matters more on the owner. I know I personally would not be concerned at 50-60k miles if it comes from a good owner.

I just picked up a 2008. Mine also doesn't like to get out of neutral. It's not terribly difficult and not persistent, but it gets annoying. Did you ever figure out what was causing it?

@@bfeadventures It's been my dream bike for about 15 years. My fuel gauge failed today, it was my 3rd time riding the bike since I bought it. I found a trick online where you zap the connector pins with a modified lighter and it worked lol (but for how long..). The bike only has 28,000 miles on it and it's very clean for a 2008 so I am very happy with the purchase.

No thanks my friend, I got rid of mine too heavy, not very capable of rough off road tracks. I exchanged it for a tiger 800 xca which although not totally an off-road machine it’s mucho better than my gsa so sorry I was fooled by what everyone said about the beemers off-road capability.

Like a lot of things the GS- GSA is a great bike till it breaks, then you better hope whatever’s wrong is covered by warranty if you have one otherwise pretty much everything on these bikes is ridiculously expensive. 💰💰💰

That’s why I would suggest a slightly used one AND a headlight guard! 😜 I will say, you get what you pay for. In the ADV world, nothing is cheap outside of a KLR/DR. not sure where you buy your parts from, but i have only been impressed with the cost of bits for mine, worse failure i have had is a gearbox, and i managed to get a second hand gearbox from a wrecked bike for $1000. a couple of my mates are riding harleys and buells and theyn spend more than that on their tassles and belt buckles

It all depends on your attitude. Todays bikes are full of electronic sophistication and they need regular servicing. And by that I mean dealer logbook servicing. You know the rule about not buying a car without a service history, right? Well it's the same for a bike these days. Long gone are the days when you could do it yourself. Most manufacturers also have tamper proof ECUs that only a factory dealer can reset. Jake at your local bike shop might think his scanner he bought from Amazon can do that? Well no. It can't. Manufacturers like BMW have invested millions into their dealer networks and they are now making sure that they get the servicing business just like the car dealers do. So wanna buy a used GS? Meet the seller at the dealer and pay the $100 for them to do a proper scan. It's all there and if the stamps are not in the log book, walk away.

let some one whos paid 20k plus run in your next GS , let them do the first services , find and fix any faults , add all the extras , and take 30% depreciation in two years ,,, then buy it pre loved The real question here is why should anyone buy a new GS.

Reliable???? You must be joking! I have a 2007 GS and it has been a cluster of failures. I am on my third fuel pump and it has failed with a rusty motor, and it is now showing yet again a crack at the fuel connector. The strip sensor, third one, is also showing some signs of ill health. I have had a new ECU too!!!! A number of tyre pressure sensors . Of course, the shaft balancer seal too, etc etc. Front shock leaking, final transmission rubber boot cracking, indicator stems becoming sticky then cracking, the list is endless ( the weather maybe a factor, I am in Phuket, Thailand but that is NO excuse!!!. I could go on but you get the drift. Cheers.

In one sentence this review states the bike is dead reliable, then in another sentence states the case has to be split due to know issues with oil leakage. High cost repair at dealer. Contradictory. Another issue is limited BMW dealers and backlog of repairs equals transportation costs, long travel and wait times for repairs. Higher ownership costs than Japanese bikes. As our goal is more riding time and low cost of ownership this motorcycle is not the king in those areas. Any less featured motorcycle can be modified to meet the riders needs.

@@f42un84u great point. I was trying to portray that the majority of these bikes are ridden many miles with no issues. However, if they do, they can be costly. I don't disagree though. That is why the GS was replaced with an Africa Twin. Ride safe out there!

The Fuel strip IS a big deal. The new part along costs over $200 then you have the labor since you can't simply install the stupid thing, it has to be calibrated by a computer. To have this repair done is over $500 to replace an electrical wire. Very stupid design to save few ounces.

I think you could find a GS in GREAT shape for under $10k. Base models started around $15k. Whether or not it is worth it depends on the way you plan to ride and what your budget allows.
