One of THE best blast gates I have seen to date. I am going to try this on my 5" system on one gate. Test it and see how it works. IF it works like I think it will, I will do it to the other 23 machines in my home wood/metal shop. I am going to add automatic, pneumatic control to make it ultimate; so when any machine is turned on (or off); the gate will automatically open (or close). You are apparently very creative. Thanks for showing this.
@GeeksWoodShop7 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'd love to see your automated control system, that sounds awesome. I'm actually in the process of upgrading my pipes to 6" and will be making a few more of these for that size as well. Good luck with yours!

One very important design feature in a blast gate is a floating slide. When the DC is activated the slides will be sucked flat to the duct work. This seals off the blast gates and prevents leakage.This leakage can be as much as having two blast gates open. This will reduce the airflow by up to 50% at the gate where it is needed.
@GeeksWoodShop6 жыл бұрын
Good thoughts. I haven't had any issues with air leaking, probably more luck than intention.

I've seen a number of DIY blast gate designs, but they almost all suffer from issues of binding because they attempt to slide parallel. This design is simpler, appears to be more functional and is elegant, just by pivoting the mount. Good engineer wring and design... Simple.

Is there an advantage to swing blast gates compared to the sliding square design, or is just another way of accomplishing the same goal?
@GeeksWoodShop6 жыл бұрын
No advantage (that I know of) as far as effectiveness. The one advantage for me is that I run pipe across my 10' high ceiling, so it's easy to still open and close gates with a pull cord or attached stick because of the pivot point. I couldn't do this with a square design.

After lots of searching for blast gate designs, I really like these. Great job on the video. I can't seem to figure out what the holes on the outer edges are for (1st and 3rd base if you look at it like a baseball diamond)
@GeeksWoodShop7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Ya, those are just remnants from the SketchUp drawing to represent some sort of stop at the sides or per the gates that I put on the ceiling, they are just me drawing in those holes that would connect to pulls. You could safely ignore them.

These are some really nice blast gates. The design makes a lot of practical sense. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate the design and hard work making these gates. But I do have a question. Wouldn’t it have been easier / cheaper to just buy some blast gates given the amount of time making them? After all, time is money, money is time. Outside of this question, I think the design is nice and a lot of thought went into it. Good job!
@GeeksWoodShop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and ya, the time vs money is always a reality, huh? If I were a production house, I think I would buy more off the shelf, but I'm not, this is a hobby, so part of the satisfaction comes from creating your own solutions, like this particular version that isn't readily available for purchase, and otherwise just a build rather than buy attitude that doesn't make the best business sense, but such it is.
@jarmstrong28435 жыл бұрын
Well, ya got a real good point there, Bud. It is better to get satisfaction from doing things yourself and money becomes secondary. Have a good one!!!!

Is it just me or are the dimensions on your plan not correct? The locating dimensions for the hole in the moveable piece doesn't seem right.
@GeeksWoodShop7 жыл бұрын
Visually, it may seem off, as the pivot center to the opening center is not vertically aligned in the movable piece, but the actual distance for both parts is the same. If you build it and have problems, please let me know.

Respectfully; on your drawings at the end of the video; you show a dimension of 2 15/16" (C/L of the 4" port from bottom up) on the right hand picture. Is that an error? It looks much more than that. Could it possibly be 6 15/16" instead. Also; the 2 19/32" dimension appears to be incorrect. I am building a 5" prototype as we speak. It should be finished soon. Can't wait. As I calculate them, the 2 angles are 25.2 degrees and 30 degrees respectively; using Trig "sin-1". Am I correct? Thanks
@GeeksWoodShop7 жыл бұрын
Woah, you are totally correct.That dim is way off. I just checked it and it should be 5 7/8". If it's helpful to you, I can send you my SketchUp file so you can scale it for your 5" pipes. PM me if you'd like.
@MrPatdeeee7 жыл бұрын
That would be awesome. But since I am needing the correction on the 2 19/32" dimension, could you give me that so I can finish the prototype. I am down to that point in my build. Thanks so very much dear friend.
@GeeksWoodShop7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for letting me know, I updated the PDF linked in the description with correct dimensions. The dim you are asking about: 2 19/32 should be 5 3/16. Sorry for the confusion. I would put up a banner to warn of the incorrect dims in the video, but I think KZbin removed that feature when they added cards. Dag yo.
