Now I know my plans for the weekend. My school shop was built for high school students but now it's a middle school shop and some of the blast gates are out completely out of reach for my youngest students. Moving the gates is not really an option. I attached extension poles to some of them but that solution is pretty clunky and easily broken. I had been looking at electronic solutions, but those are prohibitively expensive. However, I can pretty easily run bowden tubes to the four most awkwardly located blast gates. May I share a solution to a related problem that might interest you? Last summer I removed the (frequently mislaid) RF remote I had been using for the DC system in my home shop. Instead, I put magnetic micro-switches on each of my blast gates. These are wired in parallel to control a low voltage circuit that energizes the solenoid of an HVAC contactor. The contactor switches the dust collector. The first blast gate opened turns it on. The last one closed turns it off. Most of my blast gates are immediately adjacent to the machines, but I'll build three of your bowden cable actuators to handle my jointer, planer and table saw's gates. Looks like I'll need to build at least seven of these, probably a job for the CNC machine.

I just thought that the "obvious" solution these days would involve Raspberry Pis or Arduinos, stepper motors and whatnot. This is way cooler.

A strange world in which we keep complaining about needing to save energy and do away with environmentally harmful power generation, yet everything has to be microcontrolled with electronic devices, completely forgoing that a lot of things can be reliably used with already invented, simple mechanism that dont need electricity to function.
@GoalOrientedLifting4 жыл бұрын
@@nekoimouto4639 well, a total of 50w on machines that uses 20 times as much isn't really the heavy hitter, when it comes to saving power. Turning your hot water down to 70 celcius would do a lot more. Even turning of a lightbulb when leaving the room would save more

In addition to a solid and clever solution to a problem, your presentation was an excellent combination of both speech and video. I have grown weary of the how-to videos with no voice-over to explain both what and why you are doing. It is like I am supposed to be impressed with the silent wizardry. The purpose of a how-to video is effectively communicating a concept or idea. There are many forms of communication and an intelligent combination of the various forms is a best practice and certainly the most effective. Your video scored a direct hit on all counts! Thanks

Very smart Cosmas, to cut the holes through all three pieces all at once. Your video was worth the viewing just for that. But what a very cool way to open and close the gate! Very nice in every respect: design, workmanship, narration, and the video. Thank you! I just ran a search for bowden cables. At first, none cheaper than $10 US showed up. Then I remembered a marvelous online and brick-and-mortar surplus source in Lincoln, NE, Burden's Surplus Center. "Bowden cable" yielded no results so I searched "control cable". Though some cost as much as $75, at the moment they have 998 pieces of lower quality control cables 78" long for $1.99 each. The stock number is 1-3487. One caveat - Surplus Center gouges you for shipping so look over their whole inventory for stuff you might want before ordering.

Nicely done Cosmas. I will definitely be using this idea in the near future. I'll give you a tip. You can directly thread into birch plywood. The tap hole has to be near 100% thread engagement. It works very well. Testing has proven it to be considerably more resistant to pulling out than a screw. And you can easily disassemble it many times without any problems as long as you are careful not to cross thread the hole used. I have been using this method in jigs for my cabinet shop for decades.

This is a great idea for blast gate automation. It reminds me of the older style cable releases used in photography (now they are mostly electronic). They used to have a screw you could use to lock down the cable release to keep the shutter open. This kind of approach might work to keep the blast gate open too.

That was, without doubt, the most elegant, well executed solution to remote blast gate control, I’ve seen.....and I’ve been looking. Because of my background, I had almost settled on a small DC “servo” solution for my own design.....but like you, was not thrilled about adding yet more electrical complexity to my shop. Yours is a far superior solution with only nominal mechanical complexity. I especially liked the elastic tubing retractor design. I hope you won’t mind if I “borrow” some of your design elements for my own shop dust collection.
