Great breakdown! For me, I'm really happy with my g9ii. As cool as the GH7 features are (they really are!) I think for my needs the g9ii is more than enough. That said, if I was still doing wedding films full time and client work, I'd be buying like 3 GH7's to run my business with exclusively. Ridiculous spec for the price! Long live Micro four thirds ☺️📷

I took my G9M2 to India for two weeks last week. The temperature went up to 52.8 degrees C according to the news. I took video both with my iPhone13 promax. iPhone stopped recording when G9M2 recorded as much as I needed. I think the cooling fan is not necessary for Panasonic bodies. If it wasn’t for the auto focus I would have took my GH6 though. Still I think it is better having a fan even if you don’t use it. Thanks for the great video.

Accurate, fan keeps temps under tight control and makes everything inside last longer. Whether a G9II will ever fail from thermal fatigue I don't know, buf my GF1 did eventually fail (probablynotthermal fatigue), long since obsolete when it did though. Also GF1 was made in Japan.

The GH7 has a number of features over the G9-II: CFExpress, RAW-internal, the streaming functions from the GH5-II, the tilt/flip-screen, the fan, the 32bit sound option, Arri-Log. I don't need this for what I'm doing, so I can easily stay with the G9-II. What I miss a little bit is the CFExpress, the screen and the C1-C4 I used on the GH6 a lot. This one more C-setting directly on the wheel is worth a lot for me. But overall the G9-II is better for me because of the weight and size advantage.

What's funny is that I decided on the G9 II a couple months ago after a few of your videos about it and I don't have buyers remorse. The G9II serves a different purpose than the GH series. It sits in my tool bag as my stills and run and gun video camera, where as the GH6 is the principal video camera for me (hopefully to be replaced with a GH7).

I am so grateful for your video content. I bought the G9II after watching your review, and I am so glad I did. I already own the GH5 and have used Lumix for my ranch/farm video work since the GH3. I only had to think about where 99% of my video work ends up to seal the deal for the G9II. My videos end up on online real estate websites and a link to the hosted video is sent to prospective buyers who ask for information. My videos aren’t playing at Regal Cinemas. 1080p is perfectly acceptable for most of what I do but I find myself shooting in 4K 30p most of the time just because I can. I get a kick out of the “real estate videos” that sellers pay $20K for that include actors, the shot of the Ferrari going up the drive, etc. Those are really nice videos for luxury properties but almost all of them fail to do the one thing prospective buyers want the video to do: provide information that will help them determine whether or not the prospect wants to view the property or not. Thanks again for your great content!

Given the choice, and for a similar price, I'd pick the GH7. However... 1) When I had my GH6, I used ProPres less than 1% of the time, and I never really needed. Davinci Resolve does not accept ProRes RAW. 2) The screen is better, but not a deal breaker. 3) The fan is good to have, but my G9ii has never overheated for me 4) I am unlikely to buy another XLR interface -I rarely use the one I have 5) I paid £1440 for the G9ii new, and the GH7 is £2000. Loving my G9ii plus S5iiX combination for two camera videos. My G9ii is also a backup to an OM-1 for stills with my collection of Olympus long Pro lenses. I don't use the ProRes codecs so that is not a reason for me to get a GH7. I do like the hinged articulating screen and the fan, but I haven't had any overheating problems yet the way I use my G9ii. When I do (hour long videos in direct sunlight in up to 40C heat), I will throw a white tee shirt over the camera and see if that is enough, that's all it took to keep my OM-1 going in the same service, same conditions. Thanks for the excellent video comparing the two options. No buyers remorse here, and I may get a GH7 eventually myself, but no hurry and no current need. Great move by Panasonic/Lumix to produce the GH7!

I will definitely be draping a white tee shirt over my G9ii when in direct sunlight in the summer--finally got it to overheat this week, as expected. For now, I've moved my S5iiX to the sunny position and the G9ii to the shaded position for my two camera setup and that works great for hour long clips. I'll stick with the G9ii if all it takes is a tee shirt to keep it from shutting down when I need to use it in the sun on a tripod for an hour or two. I'll decide in August, most likely.

Nobody talks about it And the G9MKII has a grip to double the autonomy, not GH7.. you didn't say it here. I spend a lot of time filming my family. The big differentiator for me, also makes the GH7 even heavier, and more expensive, is the 32 bit float audio, which requires the new XLR unit. According to Panasonic information that unit is only compatible with the GH7. I don't know if there is a hardware limitation that means the G9 II cannot ever use the new unit, or if it is just a marketing decision, but for now it seems, the G9 II will not be getting that audio upgrade, and for many people, myself included, it will be the audio that is the deciding factor. I will have to look closer at the slow motion issue, because slow motion is important to me, but I suspect that in practice the G9 II advantage is relatively small. I have had a savings account named G9 II for a few months now, but I have already renamed it GH7. I have no intention of selling my G9, GH5 II, and GH5s, as they are fabulous cameras that still serve me well, and mean it doesn't matter if it takes two or three years before I can finally get the GH7, but my trusty G9, I suspect, will remain my smaller travel stills shooter. I love that camera to death, and the GH5 II is no slouch either. But with the GH7, just like the GH4 in its day, just hits it for a six. It is a slam dunk home run of a camera, it will bring a wave of buyers back to the format, and that is good for both Panny boy and Olympus. I want to see Olympus get a few lens sales, because I love my Olympus lenses, and so have a vested interest in seeing the company thriving again. There is an Olympus 90mm Macro and a 75mm f1.8 somewhere in my purchasing future. And from Lumix I have the Leica 9mm f1.7, and just maybe, one day, the 10-25 and 25-50mm f1.7 zooms on my wish list. The MFT dilemma is that there is so much MFT goodness to buy, and so little money to spread around.

One of the features of the GH7 I’m really attracted to is the CF Express slot. I have a GH6 and initially I tried an external hard drive to capture video. This worked fine; however, I needed to power the camera with the USB port as I shoot for long periods of time. Now I use a 2 TB card which allows me to record over 3 hours in ProRes 5.7 K. I also record 4K on my Ninja V. This gives me a backup and will allow me to punch in even more.

I would have felt buyer's remorse if I had bought the G9ii before the GH7 for sure. But, since I'm still shooting with my Sony FX30, I'm in good shape. But, the new features of the GH7 are fantastic for filmmakers. Personally, I don't shoot slow motion hardly if ever. But, the internal raw, the 32-bit audio, the LUMIX Lab app, and of course newly added PDAF, the GH7 is definitely a no-brainer. And I've wanted to go back to Panasonic for its skin tones. Sony always requires work on the skin tones more often than not. I'm not ready to jump to LUMIX, yet. But, when I am, the GH7 is in my sights.

I've always thought the GH5s is a great low light shooting machine, but I think it's starting to become a bit obsolete. It holds up well in low light, but it seems to me that it's not as big a difference as when we were comparing it to the GH5 back in the day. What do you think?
@iangrant36153 ай бұрын
In case it helps. as a GH5s owner, I personally would say replace GH6 with GH7. The GH5s is offering something different in terms of the lower resolution and different approach to the sensor, compared to all the others. So you will then have different cameras for different scenarios. Whereas there is really no scenario where you would choose the GH6 to shoot something compared to the GH7. Hope that helps.

Not sure the GH7 offers much more than I already have now. Have thought of upgrading the GH5S to the S5IIX better low light , maybe, but since I shoot 60P the full frame of S5IiX is now an APS-C camera !!. Don't now use continuous AF so not likely to change with what I shoot. Will see what LUMIX do for the S1H update.

My G9 was my go-to hiking camera. I loved the grip on that camera, it felt made for my hand and the fact I could also get great video with my photos won me over. I eagerly bought the G9 mark 2 and do notice a slight uptick in image quality in both photo and video, although I miss the mark 1 grip. I own a GH5 mark 2 which I use primarily for video. I might consider a GH7 in the future when its (heavily) discounted, but since the G9 mark 2 doesn't have recording limits means it might also be my video go-to camera as well.

The G9II has also a battery grip so more suited to photographers, hybrid shooters and also cheaper. The GH7 is more for the video centric shooter. What I don’t like is hearing that Lumix is discontinuing the GH6 which was selling for a lower price then the G9II. So there is no camera on m43 at that price point.

If your doing paid work I wouldn't recommend a fanless camera. It's hard to predict under what circumstances will cause it to overheat. If you're running unmanned cameras or doing a live event like a wedding it's not something additionally you want to worry about.

What would be a pity as lot of people would like use one of the latest MFTs in combination with the FF S5(X)ii. Guess Jordan from peta pixels brought that up.

Love the G9 mk2 but wish it had autofocus at 240-300fps. One correction, the G9 mk2 is able to achieve 300fps in HD. If your camera only say 240fps, you need to go to "Image Quality 1", go to "synchro scan" and turn it off. Then go back to "Slow & Quick" setting and it should now say 300fps.

I’m an enthusiast not a pro. What are then things that make you think, when filing with your G9II that you wish you had your FF S5IIX and vice versa? Is it for example just low light?

I'm never going to shoot raw video of any kind, most likely. Interestingly it has 2x SD which suits me. Guessing no external SSD thiugh? Not much cheaper than the full monty camera, so only the size/weight/cost vs features will decide.

I can't find anywhere if this camera can do it? My dad has a nikon Z something that does it perfectly well and I need this feature for work. Apparently the S9 does it too but I want a grip on my camera and don't want to change the MFT lenses I already have. ( 12-60 ,42.5 and 100-300 ) TLDR : does the G9 II have good automatic wireless automatic photo transfer to phone / computer? Thanks for the review now I know I don't need the GH7 at least :) Edit : maybe I should keep the G9mk1 and buy the S9 specifically for my work..?

I’m excited to replace my gh6 with a gh7 because iso 500 is easier than 2000 and (here’s the main reason) my video production company is growing and having AF capable cameras makes it easier when it comes to handing off a camera to someone who isn’t as strong as me when it coming to shooting and nailing focus

i wish they'd do fewer models and focus on refinement with all the features instead of crippling every segment with "almost-perfect" and forcing upgrades just to have a specific function. like 3 form factors and a pro and budget line would be perfect. The market is too crowded with junk. Its also ridiculous that its $1000 more than an S5iiX...and just as heavy. The whole pont of MFT is weight saving, otherwise just get FF.
@ddsdss2564 ай бұрын
I'm still getting used to the G9M2 and trying to figure out how to optimize the AF (that would be a good video--how to get the best out of the hybrid AF for different scenarios). As I'm stills-centric and often use MF, I've never had much trouble with DFD, but there are cases where the G9M2 seems to produce slightly better results. The G9M1 is still a phenomenal camara and although the M2 is an upgrade (although the M1 "feels" better in hand), it really only gives you a bit better odds of getting usable shots in challenging conditions. Beautiful Mesa amp there--I'll bet it sounds as good as it looks.

By doing that, I think even the Canon C70 or the Sony Fx3/30 users would switch to the Lumix GH7... Fast Primes Autofocus Lenses selection for such great camera 📸, now is the only problem, to find some on the m43 system, because it didn't exist yet

I think that's literally the only missing thing in the m43 arsenal is a couple of F/.095 autofocus lenses. Only reason they haven't been made is likely because: 1) Difficult to make them sharp enough wide open without Cromatic Abberations or heavy vignettes 2) People would complain it's too big and expensive for m43 I'd gladly accept being somewhat soft at f/.095 as long as they sharpen up nicely by f/1.4. The Nocticron has it covered at 42MM focal length. A 15mm or 20mm focal length would be great. It'd be really cool to have a m43 lens that's as close as it gets to an FF f/1.8 in light gathering and shallow DOF that also has full CAF abilities.
