Hi @geekyranjit ,Greetings from Sydney Au. Love your content. I have been driving a Tesla Model Y with LFP battery for a couple of years now.Just a few pointers on the video: 1. LFP batteries, just like any other batteries, do not "Like" to be charged to 100pc. They are just more robust than Cobalt Mangense based batteries, and will get more charge cycles compared to the NMC ones. 2. 100pc charging is usually done to calibrate the BMS, as you rightly mentioned, as the voltage curve of LFP batteries is pretty flat, unless they are either at 100pc or single digits. Tesla recommends we charge the LFP to 100pc once a week, whereas Ford recommends to do so once a month at least, again for the BMS calibration. 3. The Battery University conducted several experiments where charging within the range 50-70% increased the longevity of the batteries to a considerable amount. I understand this might not be practical for a lot of EV owners esp who live in an apartment. Just quoting in case where longevity is the only factor. Highly recommend you check this study out. Either way LFP batteries in an average scenario would easily outlast any EV ownership as they can go for many 100,000's of miles. Hope this adds some value to your EV ownership. Great job on KZbin again.

For new owners thumb rule is simple, charge to 100% if LFP and 80% if NMC as such also the cars which are coming with NMC are costlier ones like Ioniq 5 (xuv400 will be discontinued soon) for those cars one doesn’t have to Manually switch off charging as they have such features in car itself or the mobile app (custom charge limit for home charging) Further this LFP balancing issue is also only limited to budget cars as they don’t have active balancing. Cars like model 3 and y also use LFP but they have active balancing so even opportunity charging won’t be problematic Not sure about Mahindra but since they are using BYD Blade, I expect them to be free from this balancing routine as well

@ so it seems even xuv400 is having passive balancing then Cell balancing mechanisms aren’t chemistry agnostic per se but yes since NMC was always costlier than LFP and used in higher segment vehicles, most of them always had active balancing It would be sensible to have passive bracing on sub20L cars be it NMC or LFP

Not an EV car, but we got Ather 450X almost a month ago. About 100km range, which is more than enough for daily commute(about 50km for college travel per day). Yes, the faster modes will drain a lot more battery, but so far, we didn't need to travel more than 70km in a day. And yes, draining it till 20-25% will be optimal. Not too many charging frequency, and also not too low to stress the battery while charging.

Ec3 owner here!!!! Here are my stats. 1 year 9 month - 52k km done , that means almost 5 Lakh rupees saved on petrol and engine oil etc. I only pay for fast charging, because my office provides complimentary slow charging without extra cost. I have roughly spent ₹ 9000-10000 in total in terms of charging. Price of my vehicle after subsidy and modifications is 12.8 lakh in total. Battery depleted by almost 2 percent. Earlier it was showing 240 on full charge now it shows 232km. I need to run this vehicle for 1.4 Lakh km in total which i will achieve in max 3 years. After that the price which i paid for my car will be covered , and then ill sell it for 2.5-3 Lakh rupees. If you ignore the inflation, ill be in profit after selling my car and driving it for 1.4 lakh km in 5 years. I hope this stats helped you. Btw , Im not a car enthusiast, im more of a bike person. I’ll never buy an ev Bike or scooter, but honestly I will never buy a ICE vehicle again, my next vehicle would be Byd (if govt reduces tax on chinese car) otherwise mahindra is goooooood !!!!!

@@AntiNatalAtheist don't you think that battery price will decrease in future? And moreover I think ₹3L for an electric car that can do 190-200 km on full charge , having no 15 year limitation would actually make sense for many guys. Some of them would even think like me ,i.e., if i run this car for 30,000 km it will recover its 3L rupees cost in terms of petrol. And moreover, have you ever seen a petrol car (not cng) giving milege of more than 10 kmpl with ac on and 1.4 L km on its odometer? P.s. I did all the calculations. If you are not a car enthusiast and daily running is >70km , buying an ev car that costs less than 18L on road will be no nonsense in long term!!!! Golden rules with LFP. 👉 Charge to 100% once a week or at least once a month on slow AC charge. 👉 LFP have 100% Dod(Depth of discharge). So drain your batteries to less than 10% whenever you get a chance. Again charge on AC to 100% 👉 DC Rapid charging frequently is fine as long as it you ac charge back to 100%. 👉 Cell balancing happens on AC at 100%

Sorry Ranjit, I disagree. However I love your series and I am subscribed to your channel. I do have two vehicles one with NMC and almost 2 year older with LFP chemistries. I used to create my own Nimh batteries for my RC cars 18 years ago, later moved to Lithium polymer batteries for my RC planes and drones, while the very first EV cars were still using NiMH batteries (for safety) Lead Acid: (home inverters / cars) Degradation happens if your charge goes below 50% of SOC. Lithium-Ion: (phones, electronics, ev cars etc)There is a wide variety of chemistries. These batteries give you the best life while running them between 20%-80%. Some batteries are affected more and some are affected less. Lithium iron phosphate - Lfp-(LiFePO4), batteries get less affected when charged to higher capacities and is needed for cell balancing and range information projection. For regular users I would suggest that they charge to full once in couple of weeks. Do not take it below 10%. Try to keep between 20% to 80%. Your Situation: I am long time viewer of your channel, from which I gather that you slow charge your ev for most of the time. Fast charging all the time does degrade the battery due to high heat generation, so my take is that your battery is at its best, because you had always been slow charging your Nexon EV. There are many youtube videos that I saw where they have mentioned the display requesting slow charge after multiple dc fast charging.

Have been owning a Tiago ev since the last 1.5 yrs. I only charge till 100% occassionally. The car has run about 12k kms(very less mileage relative to the ownership duration). However I've done 2500 km (round) road trips on the car twice. The whole duration charged on fast chargers. Heck i dont even have a charger of mine installed, everything on public fast and slow chargers. Even after that i dont see any degradations. They might creep up couple of years down the line, maybe they won't. The thing to remember is that the batteries can go 2000-3000 cycles before major degradations. For a car like Tiago, if you take an average of 170kms/charge, that's 3.4L-5.1L kms. I don't think anybody's going to keep the car for so long to actually face that scenario. So for people who use EVs range anxiety isn't an issue once they have pushed their car to the limits. Plus, the longevity also shouldn't be an issue, however lack of adequate quality controls might be a concern. Plus the added advantage of low running and maintenance cost is just amazing. My 1k km trip cost stays under 3k, that too all public fast chargers, which is amazing! My whole family travels at 1/4th the price of a train travel! Even if i include stays, it's still less than half the cost of train travel!

I work in automotive segment and am working in battery packs department, especially in LFP battery packs. If possible, please pin this comment and will help people to maintain their battery, and there is a high chance, the battery will actually outlast the vehicle. 1. LFP batteries, just by their nature, create difficulties in the BMS (battery management system to know for sure their top and bottom portions of the battery pack, i.e., their 100% charge levels. So, every once in a month charge your car to 100% and keep it charging, so that it helps BMS to calibrate 100%. 2. Do not try to use the bottom 5% of your car's range with driving. Sometimes you can go for as much as 10-20 miles below 0% and sometimes, your car will stop at 3%. When not expexcting to use the car during a weekend or something, maybe about once every year, turn your climate control to full heat or cool when parked and drain the battery completely, and then charge to 100%. This helps with calibration on the bottom of the battery side. 3. Keep your LFP battery SoC anywhere between 50-70% usually. This is before the car's BMS starts cell or module balancing and is usually the SoC to keep your battery health good. Of course, this also depends on the battery OEM, but 50-70% is a good thumb rule. Too low of a charge and then when you plug in, charging to higher percentages promotes dendrite formation. So, for daily use, try to keep the charging discharging cycle within 20%. For example, if you start your day with 60%, and the day ends at 45%, that is a 15% charge difference, and most LFP batteries don't even get damaged. But if you wait to charge it till 70% when the battery drops down to 20% and then charge to 70%, the dendrite formation occurs. 4. You do NOT need to charge it daily. 5. Indian summers and North Indian winters are both not very suitable for the battery. So, if your car has battery temperature regulating feature while it is turned off, use that feature. Remember to have the car plugged in while this feature is active, otherwise it uses the battery power to regulate the battery temperature. 6. On road trips, charge your batteries before they drop below 10%, as LFP batteries cannot charge at their top speed when their voltage is at the bottom. They need some higher voltage than at the bottom of the battery pack. So, you should get the highest speeds from 10% to up to 80/85%, depending upon your car's battery architecture. 7. If you live where the water is very hard, or the soil has lots of salt contents, regularly wash your car and don't forget to wash underneath too, but with softened water. Removing the scaling stuff will maintain corrosion and keep your battery pack watertight. About 75% of battery claims we get under warranty is due to snow accumulation and the snow is usually salted in Northern US/Canada.

This was really surprising - I assume most of the HV critical issues reported by TATA ev's is because of the improper charging. TATA themselves should have found some software solution like reminders and warnings while charging the batteries so that customer would be aware of this.
@geekyranjit

Yeah, they should have educated the dealers to let know the customers the best practices of charging and to avoid opportunity charing, which is a thing that many new people who buy EV tend to do.

Own a Nexon ev. Spoke to tata motors technical team before buying one. They had said the HV critical and related errors are usually because of customer created issues, or loose wires or shorted wires... The battery failing is less than 1%. And it does not matter how you charge fast or slow or how much % you charge. The BMS is smart enough not to cause charging damage to the battery. It's been 25000 km in five months and there are no issues till date.

Just to point out that charging to 100% or draining the battery to low SoC doesn't have any major impact on the LFP battery but if we don't do it the BMS gets confused and gives us wrong information. That why these charging practices need not be done everytime but only occasionally say every 4th or 5th cycle

@geekyranjit
@geekyranjit 22 күн бұрын
See with NMC batteries, you should not charge it above 80% often, you can go upto 100% when you are planing to do a longer ride but not often, another thing with NMC batteries is don't drain them below 20% often as they like to be between 20-80% charge. But one good thing with NMC batteries is that you can often do small top-ups to it, unlike the LFP batteries where frequent top-ups (opportunity charging is not recommended). With ev Scooters that use NMC batteries you might have to replace them in about 4-5 odd years, as NMC charge cycles are typically about 700-750 charge cycles, unlike LPF which is about 2000-3000 charge cycles, but LFP is not generally used in 2 wheelers as they are heavier batteries.

Exactly. The government must recognize that without mandating robust charging infrastructure or providing substantial subsidies for its development, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) will take significantly longer. While people are increasingly willing to purchase EVs, the lack of accessible charging solutions discourages the majority-90% of potential buyers-from making the switch.

I think the EVs are first bought by commuters, mostly. Then come the speed-freaks. The last to go for EVs are highway tourers and off-roaders, who like to upgrade & modify their vehicles, it's easier with ICE. By the time EV technology & maintenance hits the highways & villages, I am sure the charging network will also grow. We have to start SOMEWHERE ! So I use a Nexon EV for city commuting and Gurkha Diesel for all outstation travel.
