Oh damn! I remember Funtoosh sms jokes being circulated during my college times. Early Nokia days. I have also quit my job last year and working on my start-up. It took more than an year to get our 1st project but I guess we kept working and had patience. Yes there were some days where we felt like that was a big mistake but it takes time to get over. Not only do you have to be extremely good at what you're doing, you also have to be extremely good at negotiations. I freelanced while doing my bachelors. I didn't get paid ANYTHING because I didn't know how to negotiate in my 2nd year of degree. Since 3rd year, I started to negotiate better, started getting bigger projects and bigger checks. I earned enough money in my third year that I didn't go for an industry internship and rather went for a fairly low-income research internship. That's kinda when I realised that research is a lot better. Now I'm in grad school pursuing research all thanks to the confidence I gained during the negotiations and the communication skills I picked up along the way. Doing something on your own is definitely worth it !

Didn’t knew that Ranjit was such a hardcore engineer. I can totally relate to the points mentioned, I was in TCS and it totally boiled me down when I get to knew my billing rate. And yes totally you need to prove through projects etc that you’re capable, even now a days you need to prove recruiters with projects on your resume. But the tech sector does had grown a-lot specially in India. And Indians are not low level workers anymore. But still yeah nothing beats than having your own venture. Wanted to start freelancing on the side. This had encouraged me even more.

It's good to hear from somebody from your own domain and age about the profession which we both were/are in. To be an expert in your domain (particularly in Web Application Development), you need to spend enough time in small companies with good projects. Then only one can become full stack developer. With right talent, one can learn a lot in small companies. I'm still working(coding) for small startups, as it is more challenging though not rewarding enough. I charge very less, so that I can do very challenging stuffs at my pace. At the age of 50, I still learn new technologies each year though not each day. it's true that listed companies like say wipro, cognizant..TCS etc pays just 5% of the project cost to employees as cost of employees... This can be found from their p&l and balance sheet...

I am 24, just as you said , in top 3-4% at my organization. Sort of a handyman person whom you can assign a task and consider it done without any assistance. The only catch is India has very big population and there are certainly lakhs of people who are equal or better than me, alot of them having the same aspiration. Also Market is atleast a 1000x more bigger, and there are alot of people looking to grab same opportunities. Not to mention, projects were alot more simpler too. During college, Tried to get started through freelancer & upwork but failed to get projects. Maybe will try to become a contractor after gaining some experience in my current company , but getting full fledged projects is certainly not feasible at this point.

Hi Ranjit. My story is similar. I used to work for a prominent institute as an IELTS trainer. They used me as a slave. They used to pay me 15 thousand per month, using me as a commodity by continuously forcing me to take sessions even when others were present. After a year, I came to realise that my potential was so high that I outperformed other trainers there and was the charm on the organisation. They were reluctant to boost my salary despite my umpteen efforts to help students clear their tests. The monthly income of the company was 10 lakh plus and my salary was 15 thousand 😐 Later, my manager was literally a mercenary and finally the time came when I quit and I can proudly say, I have my own IELTS institute today and it's the institute with highest success rate ❤️
