The movie Respect ends with that, but edits out showing Carole in the audience, though her albums are shown on stage. They did show the Obama's. There is also the version from VH1 Divas Live where Carole is supposed to start, but out of habit, Aretha starts first. They look at each other, Aretha shrugs and Carole smiles and steps back. Celine, Mariah, Shania, and Gloria Estefan each take turns singing. Everything one goes high, she goes higher. One goes low, she goes lower. The absolute top vocal talent of their generation and Aretha out-sings them all.

Interesting choice. This was actually Aretha's first single released after she signed with Atlantic Records. "Respect" came next, and we all know how that turned out. :) "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" and "Chain of Fools" followed soon after. You'd love those.

I'll never forget her gospel concert with her sisters and Mavis Staples in her father's church a few years after his horribly tragic death. That was the last Aretha Franklin concert I went to. The last time I got to see her in person and get a hug from her was at the inauguration of Michigan's first female governor in 2003. She sang America the Beautiful. She even remembered my dad when I told her he was friends with her dad. She asked me what my dad's name was. When I told her, she got a big smile on her face, called me by my childhood nickname, and gave me a hug.

So many songs of hers take me right back to the 60's, 70's. I never get tired of hearing them. Please do listen to more of her work, as mentioned in several other comments. I hope you guys will react to her performance at the Kennedy Center Honors award show, where Carole King was receiving the life time achievement award that year and Aretha sings Natural Woman to Carole in the Audience. The performance was stunning, Aretha walked out there in a fur coat, and purse in one hand and sat down on the piano bench and basically said, Here let me just blow the roof off the place!!! and she did. My dad and Aretha's dad were good friends. My dad was a social worker employed by the Detroit Civil Rights Commission. Aretha's dad was a leader in the civil rights movement and pastor of New Bethel Baptist on the corner of Linwood and Philadelphia where Aretha started singing solo hymns at the age of 10 not long after her mother died. After my parents divorced when it was my dad's turn to co-parent, he would take me to the services in the early 70s when I was in pre-school and kindergarten. You haven't heard her sing until you've heard her singing in church. Last time I had the pleasure was on July 30, 1987 at one of three gospel concerts she recorded in the church sanctuary with the help of her sisters Erma and Carolyn and Mavis Staples for her double LP gospel album called One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism released in December 1987 and a remastered double CD with even more tracks than the original vinyl release in 2003. I got goosebumps when she started singing Ave Maria.

Aretha Franklin and her collaborators practically invented the sound you hear on this song. This was her first real soul *album* -- before this she sang some soul songs but her albums were mainly pop and some jazz. Many of her 70s performances had the Allman Brothers playing behind her! "See Saw," "Chain of Fools," "Day Dreaming," "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream," "96 Tears," :Angel," "The House That Jack Built," "Dr. Feelgood," and her other masterpiece, "Ain't No Way." She often played piano while singing these songs, her sisters Carolyn and Erma contributed often, and the lead sax behind her in many cases was King Curtis, whose "Memphis Soul Stew" you just *have* to check out.

Yeah, I've been suggesting Etta for at least a year but she keeps getting passed by for some reason. Unfortunate because I do think J&A will really love her voice (and personality, honestly). Especially with the Janis connection, Etta should be a no-brainer for Amber to love. Also, they reacted to Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa doing Etta's song, "I'd Rather Go Blind" and loved it. It's time to get some Etta on this channel! Just to add a specific suggestion (should your comment rise to the top where they'll see it), this is a great live version of Etta absolutely slaying "Something's Got A Hold On Me" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/habIqpSDpLqIqpY that, personally, I like even more than the album version.

YALL MAKING MY DAY!!! 2 DETROIT QUEENS ARETHA & DIANA! So this was 1967, she was 25, what you hear on the piano on this song this is all her, she was an expert & underrated pianist & played on a lot of her recordings. The thing that I think is underrated (in terms of our generation & under primarily) is that people think the praise of her comes from the big notes of her voice, the truth is it's all aspects of her voice, she's not "The Queen Of Soul" because of her range or technique, it's those plus her ability to emote & her ability to put soul & gospel & blues feeling in ANYTHING she sang, and the ability to use so many different elements of her voice, in 1 song she could jump from standard style, to jazz style, to blues style....and that brings me to the song I recommend the most that is arguably my favorite song of hers, "Ain't No Way", been covered by many, some of the best voices to come after her have done great covers of that song, but NOTHING beats the Aretha Franklin 1968 original (with her 2 sisters Erma & Carolyn in the background also Mrs. Cissy Houston....WHITNEYS MAMA, who hits operatic notes all throughout the song), in nearly every way that song is PERFECT, and why no cover to me can even sit with it, it's just like what I was saying above, when a lot of people think "Aretha" they think "BIG VOICE", but the key to that song just like this song here is the softer vulnerable moments that lead to the big moments, she's having a conversation with him that he's not getting SO SHE GOTTA GET LOUD SO HE CAN UNDERSTAND! (that's how I look at her, Whitney & Mariah's take on ballads, it's easy to get lost & carried away in the big stuff, but listen to the small moments that take us there). I Promise you all, Ain't No way will blow your socks & hat off in every single imaginable way.

This was her first recording with Atlantic and was recorded at Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals with The Swampers, the house band at Fame, backing her. This was the first time that Aretha became Aretha! Check out the Muscle Shoals documentary. Prior to this she had been with CBS Records and they tried to make her into a soft, songstress with little to no success. Jerry Wexler signed her to Atlantic and sent her to Alabama to get that raw, funky, soulful sound coming out of Muscle Shoals.

The Queen of Soul!!!! Thank you for reacting to her. Please do "Chain of Fools" and the duet with George Michael "I Knew You Were Waiting". Also please react to another powerhouse female singer: Angela Winbush. Listen to "Angel". She was also part of the group 'Angela & Rene'. Two good songs to react to is "I'll Be Good" (watch the music video) and "Your Smile".

My dad was kind of a player in those circles back then. He'd call them the chitlin circuit, and the soul circuit in later days. Some of his fav stories was how Aretha would fawn over me as a baby and how I loved to bounce on her knee. To be honest, I was so young, I can't say I remember it. I do remember poker nights at our house where friends and guests played until the sun came up. Although he was still nice to me, I remember it didn't seem like James Brown really liked kids being around. One of my dad's very best friends was a singer back in the day by the name of Joe Tex. I remember I was about 9 or 10 when he passed. My dad was crushed.

@@susandiane311 Already got that one in my collection. If you haven't yet, check out "The Love You Save" by him as well. On a personal note, Joe was a really sweet man. Always finest kind to me, and was quick to smile, but also was one of those people that was kind of a magnet to people. They just loved the person as well as the entertainer

The chemistry you two have is so sweet - it’s authentic; it’s not showy. You guys are always in synch! I notice this in your other videos, of course, but the way you all look at each other right at 2:33 - well, it just makes me tear up a little bit to see two nice people obviously in love. Restores my faith in humanity. This is the best reaction show on YT with the sheer joy and musical exploration and discussion. And really great chair dancing! Best to you and your sweet kids from StL. 🙂

There are so many more songs of Aretha that you have yet to do. There’s a reason why she’s called “The Queen of Soul”. If you want to hear her rock out, then I suggest hearing her cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Jumping Jack Flash”. The video has two of the Stones playing along with her. Aretha did the song for the 80’s movie JUMPING JACK FLASH. The video also has an appearance by Whoopi Goldberg who starred in the movie.

This came from the late 60's with aretha's sisters - Carolyn and Erma singing background and Aretha herself playing the piano. Thus song came from her most classic soul era when her voice was clear and pure. Speaking of the Blues Brother she absolutely slate the song James Brown performed in that movie on her double album Amazing Grace, often cited as the Greatest gospel album of all time, The Old Landmark.

Check out her song from this 60's era in Dr. Feelgood, Ain't No Way, Until You Come Back To Me and Chain of Fools. And finally give us some Phyllis Hyman and especially my favorite (Living All Alone) She had the greatest voice since the 60's.
