Superstar songwriter David Foster admitted that he wrote this song with ONLY Chaka in mind that it was originally called "Chaka" because he was certain she would sing this. @@lesliecrawford4227 Actually 10 (with 22 nominations), but who's counting. But it's her impact on music, and other artist; producers; writers, and musicians the past 50 years that's so profound. However, not every "pop" type fan understands the enormous impact of Chaka's music, cause they're just looking at record sales (or clear pop hits) and not legacy/impact. So in there, she can simultaneously be "underrated".

Jay, Amber, have you noticed how many times these performers have surprised you with their artistic range? Not just vocal range, from low to high, but the song choices from pop/dance, 'rock & roll', to ballads, love songs, torch songs, etc. Artists and bands, the great ones, the ones that lasted, made a point of showing that they couldn't be placed in a pigeonhole. Versatility was a badge of honour. Much of commercial music nowadays is about The Formula, and if the singer messes up, don't worry, we'll fix it in post. (post-production, digital sound tools, like Auto-tune, or Pro Tools)

When I think powerful female vocalists Whitney Houston of course comes to mind. But before her there was Chaka Khan, and Patti LaBelle. Chaka’s Ain’t Nobody video moves me, not just the song but she looks particularly hot to me and she’s singing right at the camera. 🥰 Patti has a freakishly powerful voice, she literally doesn’t need a mic, plus a range and control few can match. If those high notes do it for you then listen to Minnie Riperton, Loving You. It will give you chills when she hits her whistle tone high notes. Mariah Carey is one of the few who can do that now. Chaka Khan: Tell Me Something Good, Ain’t Nobody, Patti LaBelle: Lady Marmalade, Stir It Up, New Attitude Minnie Riperton: Loving You ** And don’t think we didn’t notice the Stevie and Stevie shirts.🙂

Chaka always kills it, started loving her with "Tell Me Something Good" when she was with the band Rufus. If you really want to see a great live performance of her with 2 other great female singers, check out "Ain't Nobody's Business" with Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and Etta James. It was a BB King special. Chaka Khan is pretty inebriated and Etta seems to be holding her up at times, but Chaka stills blows the roof off, when her part comes and, both, Etta and Gladys look a little surprised at how l great she does it. Etta James amazing. Gladys Knight always delivers.

Chaka Khan’s big hair has always been her trademark signature style, even before big hair was popular in the 80’s. And her powerful voice has been her signature since the early 70’s with Rufus, she was was a pint size firecracker , and still performing and making records to this day. Fun fact , the great songwriter David Foster wrote this song with Chaka in mind , because she had so many great funk songs and he wanted her to sing a love ballad to show off her powerful beautiful vocals. And it became one of her biggest hits and my favorite Chaka song of all time!

Back in the day I bought an album by this new band called Rufus. There was one female member on the album cover. The radio single and the song I was playing was titled "Whoever's Thrilling You is Killing Me." It was a bluesy R&B song with the female singing lead. My mother came out of the kitchen into the living room and said, "Who's singing that song?" I said, "A new group named Rufus." My mother said, "That girl can sing." Of course that girl was Chaka Khan.

Next Stops: Gram Parson and Emmylou Harris, "Love Hurts" Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, "Farther Along" Tina Turner, "What's Love Got to Do with It," "We Don't Need Another Hero," "Simply the Best"

If you want more upbeat songs by Chaka Khan, I recommend "Ain't Nobody" (1978 ... the beat and the synthesizers are so cool!) and "I'm Every Woman" (1983, which Whitney Houston remade for the 1992 movie soundtrack to "The Bodyguard").

Your reaction is so good and I feel you because I have absolutely loved Chaka Khan since I was a teenager (and that's a LONG time ago! 😆). Not only does she have great power, range, phrasing and control, she is like a vocal chameleon with an ability to change her vocal tone and style to show emotion and to suit the particular style of music. Plus, she's a genuinely nice person and she has a smile that warms my soul. On a side note...this song was written and produced by the "hitmaker" David Foster and he has said that when he was writing the melody, he had Chaka in mind as the only one to sing the song and the working title was "Chaka". He has also produced, written and played keyboards on a multitude of hit songs for various artists such as Earth, Wind and Fire, Kenny Loggins, The Tubes, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Chicago and Whitney Houston, including her mega-hit I Have Nothing (although, his collaboration with Chicago on 3 albums in the 80's was controversial because he totally changed their sound into a more pop-oriented style with way less horns).

Oooh you have got got to do “Tell Me Something Good” - you're going to looove iiiit (sing song). Also “Ain’t Nobody” is so good and so is "I'm Every Woman". But I would also recommend that you do Whitney Houston's version of that song too if you have never heard it. Also, you should look up Whitney's live version of the Star Spangled Banner - it is basically like nothing you've ever heard.

Her voice is indescribable, especially when she goes up into her higher register.
