I can't believe the dept of this kata. So far I have seen 3 massively different and fully functional ways of boarding this kata. I would say they are honestly 3 different combat systems (though all of them Karate), one I believe to be a Shorin Ryu interpretation, Ian Albernethy's (not everyone agrees with him, I honestly have full respect for his approach) and this exquisite (and most elegant of all) completely different way of looking at this kata. And I was wondering if Chi-No Kata, which in my Shito Ryu school is not given as much importance ... If I am lucky and work super hard in a year I will have a very superficial idea of how these systems flow, not interiorize them just have an overview. Honestly I'm dumbstruck and really grateful to scholars such as yourself that share these invaluable resources One last thing, I tried to interpret this kata since it was not given much interest as Chino Kata (all the crowd was at the Gekisai Dai Ichi venue) and I had a very disfunctional approach that pieced together multiple parts of the kata for a take-down. Deep respect for people who manage to perform these detailed and functional interpretations. Can't wait for next training session Again thank you for all your invaluable work!

Hi Sensei Enfield, thank you for all great content! I have a question regarding the first three movement bunkai. I am really struggling to find an application that uses the step backward geidan barai as in the kata instead of the step forward that is typically presented in applications. Any advice or links? Thanks again!
@GKCgoju
@GKCgoju 10 жыл бұрын
Probably best not to think of it as a step back but rather a switching of the feet. Remember gekisai kata are a summary of many of the upper level kata and gedan barai is a simplified hari uke as in seiyunchin, or morote gedan as in suparinpei, therefore consider these higher level kata and their bunkai when trying to express this movement.

Hello Paul! I have to ask one question. what about then if you are coming inside with that gedan barai which is showing in the beginning and the guy you are hitting, hit you with the elbow? Especially if you are shorter than the another one. This situation only then when you are attacking your gedan barai/tetsui uchi under your partner's hand. I hope you understand what i mean. This might be a stupid question, but i just thinking. Otherwise this looks very good and i like very much Taira sensei's concepts.

Niko, thank you for your question. A couple of things; to successfully execute the technique you are either hitting the opponent or forcing a defensive reaction through forward or angular pressure. If the opponent is not off balance or being forced to react then yes at any time you may get hit. In addition it is of course okay to adapt the techniques as necessary for opponents of different sizes. However, for the technique you are talking about I find it works well for taller opponents; remember the gedan barai is not only a groin strike, it serves as an arm wrench/break, body check and many other things. Again, thanks for the question and your interest.

I'll get it. So the most important thing is that you are allready make your opponent off balance and then you can go inside. Of course the opponent has a much more difficult to attack at the same time when they are being forced to defend themselves. Thanks for your answer.

It is interesting how these moves are in Silat, Wing Chun, and Filipino arts. In karate kata though, the low hand (in the double blocks) rises in front of the high hand on the switches. But in application it is done the exact opposite.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. Can you be more specific?

GKCgoju He means, we pass through the inside of our ellbow with the fist of the downward motion in kata. Wich would mean in some applications, we loose contact with the opposition, blocking our own arm momentarily. So we do it the other way around a lot in kakie. I meditated a few years on that for myself ... why don't we change to both ways in the kata. Right now I think, everything we do two or three times imply, we should definitly change. And so do I in my "private" versions.
@GKCgoju
@GKCgoju 9 жыл бұрын
Kenkon Germany Thank you for the explanation. However we could also look at this way: The inner hand (cover hand) is first to contact the opponent, the second hand (blocking hand) is controlling the limb (or body) after the cover. Therefore with each successive movement you are moving closer into the opponent to gain control; if the "blocking" hand comes on the inside then one is moving back or staying still, but certainly not moving in on the opponent.

GKCgoju Thanks for the fast reply. I don't expect you to read or even answer this monstrous monologe. (It just went out of hand due to injurie caused keyboard-warriorism ...) Both versions are equally used on a partner, but doji uke dominates karate forms and gan sao wc forms - as far as I know them. I see what you mean with the intention of a forward move in the kata. But to me it's more about a rising controlling hand - the karate way most times : Yoko Uke, Hiki Uke, Age Uke, Tora Guchi - and doji uke (aka kosa uke ). Only in gedan harai we change it - a bit hidden. And in Hari Uke - obvious. ( Funny thing is, that in the IOGKF we converted that in Seiyunchin to " right hand in front on both times " a few years ago ). And in wing chung and JKD I learned ( and feeled) it's more about a descending controlling hand. The controlling hand is the hand that reaches out both times. But with the first Lap Sao and Pak Sao drills, we learned to rise with our counter behind the controlling hand. (Look at their doji uke - the gan sao in SNT.) In Goju, our Otoshi Uke + Uraken ( Saifa start and Seiyunchin end - or the muchimi ellbow of Shisochin ) carries this principle. The rolling ellbow of old Bruce. The descending controlling hand moves in also - the low counterpunch ellbow of the WC like in your age uke part carries this telehone booth feeling. In FMA with the Hubud Lubud, I learned both. But no forms... . So I think, or silent third conversation partner did more WC then FMA. Just a wild guess. In my Shotokan, it was even harder to feel the otoshi uke + nukite. So karate is more about a rising controlling hand and WC is much more about a dropping controlling hand. Our rise is a circle and drops too - but not on the first look. You even did doji uke instead of gan sao in your drill sometimes - but he maybe overlooked it. (But look, how MANY gan sao you did.) And as ukete in your basic over drill vor example you can only do gan sao - like crazy... Simply put for the video above : Most closing ( "equal chances crossing psition" - outsides of the arms together ) is initiated with doji uke. Most opening with semite inside the arms of ukete is intiated by gan sao. In your mawashi uke drill, it's another story. So karate needs more power and is more worried about it's practioners own head. Because especially in Taira 'Bunkai it dares the frontal crossing of its own arms. If lateral movement/tai sabaki should be added often and is left out in sake of the drills - I don't now. In WC you NEED lateral turns. Because you get a timing problem when standing with a gan sao OR doji uke change in front of your partner. (I won't open the pandora box about WC styles who cross in front ... ups, I just did.) They pressure automatically foreward. So they aim for the head not for clashing arms whenever there is an split second opening. And it's an automatic thing with the advanced chunners. (Maybe that's why they moved everything a bit to low in the practice drills...) But with partner it depends on how near to his elbow our checking arm is. This often determines, in which way our blocking arm travels. That, and personal leftside/rightside preferences. Even the WC chain punch direction we changed to rising in seisan. Gosh, it bothered me a long time, too. P.S. : Thanks for the detailed drill in the first place - we had fun with it. P.P.S. : What finally put me at peace was : The WC chain punch (directed upward and with fokus on the long arm and the way of it's replacement with the following arm ) is the Karate hiki uke. And not the poor old tan sao - killed by haymakers and hooks. So karate tries to reach a limb, where WC tries to reach already the body. (But that's why we close the gab with the chain punch, I hear you chunners say. Jep. But in my taste you leave to much of the grapp(l)ing portion out.) WC is indeed much more foreward then karate ... but to me, reaching and controlling a limb as main concept is more realistic. In fact I am more into wrestling two on one and posture break bunkai. "Tegumi" instead of to much kakie, if you will. Blame it on my ladies. Or on competionjudoyears that nullyfied most chi sao sparring when we went at it. (Ah, but those anoying WC head butts...)
