@Nancy Carr For a low, low $4 investment in a color wheel, you too can be fearless with color ;o) Or you can just remember the contrasting colors: red/green, blue/orange, yellow/purple. One way to make dynamic prints is to use contrasting shapes (organic + geometric) in contrasting colors. The cool thing is that there are infinite shades within each color. So, red and green, for instance, can be magenta/green gold or pink/blue-green or red-orange/olive, etc. That’s all the color theory you need.

Vikki, this is amazing!! I have a couple of newbie questions, if you don't mind. What is interference paint? Is the specific tyvek paper necessary for the diy stencils? In Australia I can only find it in the hardware store to be used for home wrapping (when building a house!) Also, I can't seen to pull my paint off my plate completely. Another thing, I really do love the other way of filming, mostly because I get to watch uou! XO
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed 2 жыл бұрын
Kaite, interference paint has an iridescence to it which shows up on darker surfaces, you can learn more by going to the Golden website. The Tyvek for home wrapping should work great. The reason Tyvek is so excellent is that it is waterproof, durable and very thin. Cut up manila folders will work too, but the more thickness of your shapes, the harder it is to get a good print, including when the acrylic paint builds up on your stencils. If you can't get your paint off your plate completely, I'm going to guess that where you live it is very dry...the same can happen here, and when it is humid, the experience is very different. You can use packing tape to pull up the dried paint, or you can just leave it there for extra interest for your next print, and roll some fluid acrylic white over it! Thank you for commenting on the camera placement, I promise to show my face now and then, the overhead view seems to be more popular though!

Melinda, thank you for your question! I believe so, but I haven't tried the Tyvek in a roll yet, I just now ordered some from Amazon as I would like to be able to cut it in larger shapes (for masks) for larger mixed media pieces I'm working on. It is so perfect for the gelli plate because it is so thin!

Love your videos! My rice paper (Yasumoto) always tears and leaves behind sizable portions of paper on the plate. Your paper looks thinner than mine. Do I need to let it dry longer?
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed Жыл бұрын
Susan, I know how frustrating that can be! I find that happens when the humidity is very low, and then my rice paper does that as well. I don't know anything about the yasumoto paper but I would begin by paying attention to the humidity and temperature when you're printing. Some experimentation is necessary, you can try to let it dry longer and see if that makes a difference...for me when the humidity is either too low (less than 15%) or too high (over 65%), I don't get good results on my gelli plate! You might also try conditioning your plate with mineral oil (then clean it with baby wipes). I hope that helps!

I am playing with DIY "gelli" plate techniques and having limited success getting the paint layers to come off the "padded baggie" surface. It was humid today and I was following other artists recommendation to not put too much paint on the surface. Also trying to transfer an image onto the dark substrate and letting it dry before putting a lighter wet layer in hopes of both layers come off my plate. The dark layer is often not releasing. Don't know if bottom layer can be TOO dry? Your video seems to be sped up a bit so don't know if you are drying the surface before applying stencils and new paint. Soooo many variables. Thanks for any advice.

Kristine, I have no experience with DYI gelli plates, I seem to get the best results with the Gel Press brand, although Gelli Arts is also fine. For sure, the humidity plays a role in the success (or lack of!) of the printing process. In my videos, I am not allowing drying time unless mentioned, but I live in a very warm dry climate which I took for granted! Also, if there is a heater or air conditioner blowing in your art space, that can affect things negatively. Let yourself play and experiment at first without too much pressure on pulling a fabulous print...the more you play, the more you learn and find those very delightful discoveries! You might invest in a very small Gel Press plate, just for curiosity's sake...good luck and let me know how you're coming along!

Hi Chris, I use fluid acrylics most of the time, heavy body acrylics don't seem to work as well for me, they are a stickier consistency, but I've seen other artists do quite well with them, particularly for photo transfers which I am far from mastering. I live in a very dry climate, which is why I believe the fluid acrylics are most successful for me. Your humidity levels (where you live) make a huge difference!

Sue, thank you for your questions! You are absolutely correct, the weather (humidity) plays a big role in the outcome. I was blissfully unaware that the dry climate here in Phoenix was helping me so much (as layers dry right away), and then we had an active monsoon season and it was quite humid and I experienced the struggle! There is a humidity window in which the gelli plate printing is optimal, too dry and the paint won't lift off the plate (and definitely do not have a fan blowing in the studio), too humid and the paper will tear and again, the paint will be stubborn. I recorded three videos on what to do with the piece made in the "Creating A Base" video, the "Peace Project" a "Mixed Media Collage Bird Project" and a floral, which has not made it through editing yet, it was quite long and I worried people would get bored. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks for your reply. I'm using a homemade gelli plate, a commercial is in the post. I'm finding the paint is drying before I even get the paper on the plate! It's as if the plate is absorbing the moisture in the paint. It's hot where I live so I don't know if that's the only reason. I'm hoping the commercial one will be easier to work with. Do you have experience with homemade plates?

What kind of paper do you use?
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed Жыл бұрын
Panda, thank you for your question, primarily I use the JapanBargain Calligraphy Rice Paper (from Amazon, Blue and Clear packaging) because the majority of my prints are for use as collage. If I want sturdier pieces, for example for greeting cards, I use some higher quality copy paper 24 lb or 32 lb. I love the rice paper because it pulls the most delicious prints, then adheres nicely to canvas or board. The heavier paper is harder to collage with, although it still works...

I live in the Desert Southwest where it is very warm and dry. Humidity plays a huge role in how your gelli prints turn out. If you are somewhere chilly and humid (or just humid) you will need a LOT more time for your prints to dry on the plate. You might try working with two plates so you can let one dry while you are printing on the other (I tend towards impatience!) I hope that helps!

If you have already answered this question in the past, I do apologize. I noticed you use primarily fluid acrylics for your gelli plate prints. Is there a significant difference in the outcome between fluid acrylics versus heavy body acrylics?
@VikkiReed
@VikkiReed Жыл бұрын
Megan, yes there is a significant difference, and there are times when the heavy body acrylics are better, for example photo transfer (which I have not been successful with yet!) The viscosity of the paint and moisture level is very impactful for the success of the print, I hope that makes sense!
