We had a TDI Golf here in California. It was also part of the recall. The AddBlue tank was big enough that you basically refilled it when we did an oil change. (We do 5kMi oil changes by choice). Worked perfectly. After the recall fix, the car used more blue juice so we watched for the warning light. Worked fine. Eazy. That said, we sold our TDI and my Audi S5 to get a tesla. No more dino juice. Except for my motorcycle.

The problem with DEF or urea blue in a large tank is the more it is exposed to air the more crystalline structures grow. The only way to prevent this from clogging or reducing the capacity of the tank is to keep it small.
@StormHawksHD2 ай бұрын
Surely Baffling could fix this issue?
@autobootpiloot2 ай бұрын
We have a 3500 liter def tank on our ship. The size of the tank is not the problem, it’s mainly the quality of the urea that gives us malfunctions. Sometimes we don’t have a problem for weeks and sometimes a batch or urea gives us problems every day until it’s gone. We usually fill up 2000 liters once a month. We make sure to never run empty. Thankfully malfunctions don’t have any effect on the engine itself. Else we would have a major problem and would the system be gone within a day.

It starts at 8500km and displays a warning when you have less than a couple of hundred km left giving you plenty of notice. AdBlue in Oz is around $2.00 / L so a 10L bottle for €50 is pretty steep.

The whole selling point of VW diesels in the U.S. (back before the nonsense scandal) was insane reliability, range up to and exceeding double that of similar petrol cars, and significantly more torque per size of motor. The rarity also meant that your value stayed extremely high if you were one of the few people who owned a VW TDI vehicle. Now the benefits may be less in Europe, particularly when they sell a load more small-displacement ICE motors with solid fuel mileage...but in the U.S., a normal Passat would do 360-420 miles per tank of fuel with a 1.8T, and the 1.9TDI model would do up to 700 miles.
@JettaJack2 ай бұрын
Yes, 700 miles. And with a 500 mile weekly commute, I bought a used 06 Jetta TDI in 07 and filled it only once a week. Still have that car.❤
@autobootpiloot2 ай бұрын
Benefits used to be similar in Europe. The Passat was a popular car here too and with the same engines available. These days petrol cars have become much more efficient and diesels not so much. They are cleaner but not more efficient so a large benefit is gone. And now diesel reliability is garbage because of the exhaust treatment system. Those always go bad and leave you stranded. Petrol engines are way less reliable than diesels but don’t have those after treatments so all in you have a more reliable vehicle. Still, if you want a reliable vehicle you’re better off buying a old vehicle and spend a few thousand to rebuild suspension and some critical components. Old stuff is more reliable even when it’s old. That’s just crazy.
@mediocreman22 ай бұрын
Nobody thinks insane reliability is a VW trait, regardless of engine. My Audi gasoline engine has been more reliable than my VW diesel. And the US never got the smaller TDI that had even better efficiency. And range is not as useful of a metric as miles per gallon. I get 600 miles range from my BMW diesel, but that's only at 27 MPG.
@autobootpiloot2 ай бұрын
@@mediocreman2 the 1.9tdi was a very good engine with extreme reliability. Those engine are however over 20 years ago and since about 2005 they have not made a lot of good engine series. Some diesels are still ok though.

In the USA, we call “ad blue” diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) on diesel cars and trucks too. When the DEF is low on my Ford F250, it limits the speed to 50mph. If it fully runs out, it will slow to 5mph. There are DEF deletes, but they have been outlawed.

Nearly every big truck in Australia has adblue…. The tanks are smaller because usage is minimal. Eg a semi has 900L diesel capacity, & only 60L of adblue. You’ll refill adblue every 3 to 4 full tanks used… same with passenger vehicles…. But the issue is, there isn’t a constant supply of adblue…it can be weeks between deliveries to servos. In a truck it won’t stop you, just limit your speed to 40kph

Re:AdBlue, yes it is a conspiracy theory. Reality is it was hard to package a big tank, the idea was the vehicle should be able to travel at least the service interval on a one tank full of AdBlu, and the dealer/service organisation would top it up. It also has to have heater to stop it freezing. Works well on trucks.. Passenger cars less so..

@MCM TV2 If you fill 10L of add blue, depending on a lot of factors it can cover up to about 10k miles, but adblue ages and can crust up the adblue injector after a couple of years if unused and will then cause your DPF to be improperly cleaned and block up. It generally has a shelf life of two years. I have a Land Rover and it has a 'miles to empty' readout for adblue, like for fuel. I recently put 5L in and it indicated an increase in range of about 6k miles, but it also depends of the kind of driving you do, because short journeys will produce more soot and mean that regens are required more often relative to the miles travelled. My car has been fine thankfully, but I am mindful of how I drive to make sure the system has the chance to clean. The big scandal right now is the diesel oil dilution issues that have been causing engine failure in European cars. A police officer in the UK was even killed when his BMW had suffered higher than expected oil dilution due to excessive idling and the engine failed and caused a fire at high speed.

One older man once told me a story. He had recently bought a new Peugeot 607 HDI and one day when he parked the car, he could hear a constant buzzing that sounded like a pump. He then took the car to the dealer to be checked and no one knew what was going on. I didn't ask him if the pump would run indefinitely or what. I don't remember exactly if the car was "in service" for like weeks or even more, but not even the official brand importer could help with the matter at first. Turned out there was a tank under the rear seat and it had run out of liquid (or there was something else wrong). Nowhere in the manual was there any mention of the tank and it took forever to even get the information that it exists. Don't know if there was some sort of bug that used up the liquid faster than it should've, or a leak or what. I've read that it's some PSA specific(?) EOLYS -liquid that is only used for the DPF regeneration and should last for like 80 000 km. Seems to be about 50-90€ per liter!
