Mince meat is and always has been my favorite pie since I was very little and I am in my 60s ! My mother and aunts used to get together in the fall of the year, making A HUGE amount of green tomato mince meat to can. Same ingredients, just with a ton of unripened tomatoes so to not go to waste at harvest end. They are all in Heaven now so I have to buy a commercial brand and tweek it alittle. Thank you for sharing this. 👍☕🌺❤️

Christmas flavored pies! Tried them while I was in Liverpool for Uni and loved them, made sure to take some home every Christmas. It was hilarious to be asked what they tasted like every time we offered to someone new; 'they taste like Christmas' always laughed at before they took the bite and always agreed with after. I'm giving it a go this year, always a bit nerve wrecking to make something new that is (ideally) aged for a while.

a lot of American recipes still use meat and suet (in addition to the fruits, spices and juices). It's delicious! halfway between savory and sweet. Traditionally, they save (cooked) meat scraps of various cuts throughout the year in the freezer for the holiday mincemeat.

I have my mother's recipe and she used ground beef and no alcohol. The meat doesn't make it savory just adds an additional element that's very good. I store mine in the freezer.

Another substitution question, but a double: I don’t do alcohol AND I’m allergic to orange (and grapefruit) but I can do lemon. Do you think I could just do candied lemon peel and fresh lemon juice and zest and maybe apple juice for the booze? I wonder if I might have to add some sugar to counteract the tartness of the lemon. Ooh, or maybe I could substitute apricot preserves for the orange portion! I loved my British grandmother’s mince pies (but that was before I discovered my orange allergy).

Question on storing the mincemeat in jars. Does the alcohol makes it shelf stable so you don't need to process it like you would jams or jellies in a water bath? Just put it in sterlized jars? Also, would I need to adjust the alcohol amount if I decided to substitute brandy for the whiskey? Thank you, love your recipes, so much fun to watch and try them.

Can I add almonds? If yes do I roast them before (skin removed) or raw with skin on ?

My family, in California, made Mincemeat using Minced Dear meat. It is the only mincemeat I’ve ever had.

The discussion here has become so interesting with all versions of mincemeat. I'm glad that some traditions are still being practiced to this day.

Hi Gemma, should I consider apple cider and vanilla extract in the same measurement as a substitute for the alcohol (for the little ones)? Would cranberry or some grape juice might too strong a taste? Thank you.

Hi Helter. You can use orange juice or any juice, in place of the whiskey. But you need to chill your cake as it will have a shorter shelf life without the alcohol. I hope this helps.

Hi, Gemma! I just have a question: Is there any substitute for the whiskey? Or can it be excluded? The recipe sounds absolutely delicious, by the way!! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

You can use orange juice instead of whisky. But you will need to chill your cake in the fridge if you are using it in a fruitcake, as the alcohol functions as a preservative. Without it, your cake will have a shorter shelf life.
