Sandman is my favourite saga of all time. Nothing compares to it. It's in a class all by itself and I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves stories. The King of Dreams!

@@sugarray6250 - There is no accounting for taste, certainly. But Sandman is much more cerebral and has a fanbase more prone to reading high-browed literature. Preacher is okay, but there is no comparison to Sandman in my book.
@sugarray62503 жыл бұрын
@@stephenturner757 I have come to agree with you. I remember reading the first few issues of Sandman when I was really young and I couldn't get into it. At the time I preferred Preacher because of its edginess and humour. Long story short I bought the absolutes of Sandman and read them a few months ago and was blown away by the story telling and writing. You're right Sandman is the much better story. Neil Gaiman has made a phenomenal universe and Dream has probably become my favourite character in comic literature ever. Best series of all time.

It's almost ridiculous how the content on this Channel continues to improve and get better and better...I mean now you are even covering SandMan?!!! I have volume 3 of this series, and the Artwork alone is Beautiful, and then you get into the out of this World Brilliant story telling!!! I personally didn't become a fan of Neil's work until I got much older...but I think that helped me appreciate it even more. But as always, great video My Dude!

Appreciate the review.. I got into Sandman coming from the Goth scene as opposed to from the comic book scene, so fun to listen to it pitched from a different angle. Been a fan since the mid '90s and purchased the first four Absolute volumes as they came out.. was thinking about picking up Vol 5 which is how I ended up here (I did end up ordering it).. still debating on Overture which wasn't out yet when you did this review; I'll probably buy the Kindle version and make a decision based on how I like the story. I think as far as Absolute Death, I'm just sticking to my kindle versions unless I see a sweet price. Thanks again!

I like your take on the Sandman, it was one of my original comics when I started reading in the mid-2000's, so it's been sitting with me for years, but your opinion is really interesting. Dream was a cold fish for sure, which is funny when you think about it, right? You spend every night with him (conceptually), but Death only gets to see us each once. Maybe that's it though, if you think about it as a commentary, Dream gets sick of us and our bullshit, Death only has to see us once we are done with all that shit. It's like your wife and your lover, one has to deal with you every day, the other one is just there for the good times.

Hey Gem, been a few weeks since I have had time to sit down and watch your channel, but definitely gonna watch this today during my break from studying. Got a couple of questions for you, do you collect other non-superhero stuff or is it predominantly superhero? I'm in the middle of reading 'Barefoot Gen', an antiwar classic Japanese manga about a family living in Hiroshima during WW2. You can guess what's gonna happen in it, but it's about their struggles against the fallout (initially) from their fathers antiwar views and how they have to deal with being labelled as traitors. I've only read the first half of Vol. 1 but I'm seeing this book as up there with the likes of Maus, Safe Area Gorazde in terms of importance in the storytelling of historic events. Just a recommendation for you, not sure if you have ever read it. My second question is, have you got your collection insured? You've got a huge collection, and I'd say that mine is approaching 1/3 of yours... already I am having thoughts about insuring it all. Anyway, Sandman is one I've yet to read... but it's on my radar. A huge thanks for your range of reviews, seen a few more in the side panel today that I'll be watching later for sure. All the best mate.
@GemMintCollectibles6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. I typically collect marvel, dc, image and dark horse. So not just superheroes, but not really manga. Keep telling myself to look into the insurance thing.
@stuartleighton6 жыл бұрын
Yeah mate, with your collection you need to, not just because of your books but the figures too.
@mutton78915 жыл бұрын
@@stuartleighton Never heard of Safe Area Gorazde before but it seems to be right up my alley. Thanks for that, do let me know of others that are similar in style. I love manga/graphic novels that have black and white artwork and are grounded in reality like Barefoot Gen for instance.
@stuartleighton5 жыл бұрын
@@mutton7891, Sorry for the delay in replying, I have been trekking in the Himalayas so out of touch with notifications. Safe Area Gorazde is phenomenal, but a bit depressing, like Maus. Joe Sacco's style is very much telling what he experiences in war torn locations in black and white style. Other notable Sacco books are Palestine, and Notes from Gaza (I think its called). In term of Manga, 'Onwards Towards Our Noble Deaths' you might like. Excellent graphic novel by Shigeru Mizuki about a Japanese suicide platoon. Excellent, but again very sad. Also History of Japan by the same author, not read this series but looks awesome. Hope this helps mate.

Think I’m finally going to go down this rabbit hole. Should I read Overture first before the original run? Or do the original run and then Overture afterwards, as they were released?

I'm really on the fence of buying this at the moment. I can get the entire set for a fair price, but it is too expensive to just go in blind. Good question. I have never owned the Omnibus and have heard that they had glued binding, which is not as good as sewn. It is $50 cheaper to get the 2 omnibus rather than the 4 absolutes if you only want to main story.
@GemMintCollectibles6 жыл бұрын
I prefer the absolutes. The pages are bigger and books are not as thick so easier to read. But, it's the more expensive route.
@frikkinnorwegian52275 жыл бұрын
Owned both, the absolutes are far far better. Omnibus seemed like they wouldn't last long. That binding is so tight and they're very thick. A lot more comfortable to read the absolutes that are able to lie flat, and the paper stock of the absolutes are superior to the omnibus.
