This song reminds me of the summer I lived in Boston as dirt poor 19 year old. I found out I couldn’t actually go back for my sophomore year cause the college was way too expensive. I wasworking at my school after classes ended so I could live there rent free to be able to see my first boyfriend and first person I truly loved. That summer I had no dollars and was selling my clothes to get any kind of money. This song is what it sounds like to take that last dollar you have and use it for a bus ride to see your babe rather than buy some damn food! We knew it had to end cause we were both leaving the city by the end of the summer so we just spent our last days laying in bed while I got drunk and cried and he just brooded and listened to The Shivers....

well, it's kind of a metaphor for insecurity, immaturity, helplessness. you watch the big kids/adults in the deep end, in their real bathing suits. maybe in this instance, the relationship made him feel like he wasn't being taken as a serious romantic interest while others who are much "cooler", if you will, are able to navigate those relationships much easier while he can only watch. that's my interpretation anyway.
