That's incredible. I'm in southwest missouri so I'm still l9king for a good mineral to source such as yourself. Well done sir. Love the stone, I admire it every night before bed I have produced some incredible dreams. Really have to thank the stone for the experiences I've had. Truly amazing capability these minerals have. Quartz can store memory a thousand times better than computer drives, you need a special lazer but the capability is there and uncomfortable.

Ive just had my first go at cutting and drilling a crystal (fluorite) with a hand tool yesterday and I made a mistake of fitting the rock in a mini vise while hand operating the tool. It was fine for drilling but not for cutting, fixing the tool and maneuvering with the stone seems like a better way, giving more room to approach and being less likely to damage the disk this way. I need a bigger vise. I used a syringe to flush the hole being drilled with water, worked pretty well but I need to fix something up to free up my off hand. Small drill press would be the best option but I'm not sure if I want to invest that extra coin.

I use the Dremel on my gems and rocks but I don’t recommend cutting with it . It would do great on a light stone like granite but agates and chalcedony are harder and it burns out you motor . I bought a cheap tile saw at harbor freight with a continuous diamond blade . Works great for the cuts and I use the Dremel for the finish touches and polish

@Basketofbluecom3 жыл бұрын
Great! I’m not sure what you mean by crystals- any mineral or semi-precious stone? Or, quartz only? It would really depend on the hardness of the stone how easy or hard it is to cut it ( the harder, the longer it would take to do cuts with a Dremel blade) You mentioned carving, this sample is cutting straight cuts, if you’re doing carving or more detail I assume you would need a carving bit. (Diamond carving bit, or so) Carving topic might be a whole different one, I have not attempted that with a Dremel (only in wood).

Awesome, I've been trying to figure out the best way to cut an egg shaped mineral, such as Jade or Quartz in half, then bore a hole in to the egg. Then, find a good adhesive(permanent glue) for these minerals. Tips anyone?

Very nice, how long for the end hand sanding and can that cutter do quartz and jasper? I know they are very close in hardness too each other. Thank you, Love Chris
@Basketofbluecom3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried quartz or jasper. I would imagine it would work the same way. I think it also depends on how much time you are willing to spend if it's a harder stone. The hand sanding time also depends on the finish you want to achieve. It does take a while, I break it to a couple of sessions. And of course you will tire your arms... (At the same time good exercise!) If you don't fret about the time it's not as bad, it's fun to see the changes on the stone.

@@Basketofbluecom Thank you. Where did you get your dremel diamond wheel cutter and about how much might it cost? I dont recall ever seeing that when I ordered some tips for my dremel. Also I saw a video where a guy made a water drip slowly from a plastic water container, the kind you pull the tab out for the level of low you want; as this made the cutting faster, smoother and easier on all ends. Just a thought. Thank you.
@Basketofbluecom3 жыл бұрын
@@ChristopherSchiffermiller I think I got the Dremel diamond wheel from Lowes. It's about $20. I have seen generic ones online for cheaper, but not sure if they would wear out really quickly. Yes, I've seen those home made water systems, if you research it you can probably find many ideas. (Maybe if you do this a lot could have a station ready to go.)

@@Basketofbluecom Thank you for the info. Seems like the more water you pour on, the easier the cutting goes. Do you do anything or can you do anything with clear bubbly like quartz/chalcedony or colored jasper stones, tumbling, cutting or such for your shop? I have my good raw ones on display and I have tons aside that are decent on most sides; in case I ever get a tumbler or get into cutting.

You could probably use dopping wax to secure the stone (to a stick). It's a standard method that gem cutters use when they grind/lap a stone. I have never used dop sticks so don't know more about it.

Is Dremel 200 good for cuting and polish gems?
@Basketofbluecom3 жыл бұрын
I think it could do the job, but it's better to have more power and variable speeds in your Dremel. The Dremel 200 is two speed, so you would use the high speed for gemstone cutting. I looked it up and it is 0.9 amps, the Dremel I used for this is 1.15. (I think most all Dremels have max 35000 RPM) It sounds like the 200 is less powerful so it might do the job, but take longer (I assume). Also, if you do any other jewelry work with your Dremel like polishing, sanding, grinding you are going to need the variable speed (the mid level RPM), because you don't want to run those attachments at high speed. That said, I'm not an expert with small tool motors, maybe somebody can comment who has more understanding on the motor power, amp and so forth. Good question!

I have tried the tumbler to polish stones and so far have not succeeded to get a polished finish on them. Been very careful about cleaning out the tumbler between grits, but they keep getting ruined at the last (maybe two) stages. That's one reason why I prefer the hand sanding...

There are lower-priced but equally as good "rotary tools" available. I purchase a Black & Decker 20 years ago which is still going strong (although, I haven't cut many stones with it as I now have proper equipment for that). You may also want to consider looking on Amazon for Rotary Tools with Flex Shaft. If you have a small air compressor you can get a very handy "pneumatic" rotary tool for under $30 Canadian ! And it is No Toy.

You need a good mask appropriate for the task (like with all jewelry making). I have different masks for enameling, grinding, sanding...etc. and of course safety glasses (also appropriate to the task). Having an exhaust system to suck the dust away is always a good idea in a jewelry studio. (People have all kinds of home made systems, search for some ideas.)

The dust gets on clothes or builds up on surrounding surfaces. Eventually, it becomes airborne again when disturbed. A steady water drip should always be used cutting rock. Silica dust will F your S up.
