The problem I've found with "measuring" gemstones by carat weight is that it varies depending on the density of the stone. A 1 carat opal is going to be larger than a 1 carat diamond. This is why I like to hear both the weight of the stone as well as the size.

I enjoyed this video and it has value. But you failed to mention that the stone cutter also has some control on the hue of color and the predominant color when observing the table and crown facets...IF...and that is a big if....the stone is doubly refractive or has a triple refraction...in other words dichroic or trichroic. Fortunately most gemstones are dichroic or trichroic. Some gemstones such as diamond, garnet or spinel are singly refractive so orientation will not affect the hue. Then the gem cutter must determine the axis of refraction and choose the proper axis to orient the stone for cutting to OPTIMIZE the hue. Another property which either can enhance or retard the strategy of hue optimization is the DISPERSION of the different refractive indices. If the dispersion is high then the stone is strongly dichroic or trichroic and the gem cutter has good options, whereas if the dispersion is small the the orientation will not change the hue as much. BTW...Color is not subjective and can be uantitize through the use of the spectrometer. We cannot only enumerate the color by wavelength we can also mesure the intensity of the color at those wavelengths. Gemstone cutting is not only an art but it is a science. Wish you well. I have subscribed.

@YourAverageJeweler3 жыл бұрын
Value and variety really needs to be evaluated by a qualified Jewelry appraiser. There are far too many factors, and as they become nicer, everything is judged on a finite scale. Also, it is good to bear in mind that "quick" tests often don't eliminate lab created as an option. Lab grown stones will test the same with a gem tester. you need other equipment and tests to determine the natural origin, which will be a major factor in cost. Best of luck.

Sir , i recently found a green heart shaped diamond about half inch in diametre ...and it has a very beautiful green colour .... apart from its heart shape , it has so many beautiful cuts like diamonds on it ... Looking at it , i am wondering how hard was it for a diamond cut maker to manage so many cuts on such a small diamond in such a beautiful harmony !!!! It is green vivid in colour , It is clear like water and in exposure to sunlight , it gives sharp sparkles of beautiful light Green , sky Blue and sometimes ruby red.... And when i hold a white piece of paper in sunlight and bring my green diamond close to it , it gives rainbow reflections !!! I am trying hard on internet to find out what is this thing ... i am not a diamond expert offcourse but i am well aware of the fact that if i take this thing to any jweller of my town ... they will snatch it away from me ! Me and my dad are very curious about this thing !!!! We have only heard of diamonds in books so far ... so we dont exactly know what it is ? Help us if anybody has any idea regarding what it is ?

Some constructive feedback - you spend a lot of this video showing yourself (no joke - maybe 95%!) and your face while explaining instead of what gemstone newbies probably want to see, which is visual examples. Case in point, your thumbnail image for this video was of gems and not yourself. While some of us can use our imaginations, it would have been better, for instance, to visually demonstrate the differences between carats, a bigger carat example, and how a mm measurement loses the other dimensions, while a carat captures mass and better represents the stone. In other words -- you could keep this same audio, but instead have a lot more gem footage. Presumably viewers want to see the gem themselves, and not the teacher, especially if viewing the teacher actually takes away from the topic that should be demonstrated with visuals, instead of the viewer's brain. This is a strength of video -- you provide the "imagination."
