Family lore has been passed down ... WW2 my aunt and husband walked into a junk store in Palm Beach and bought a "Rhinestone" pendant! It was not rhinestones at all but a piece made for the czar of Russia and stolen by the Bolchevicks when the family was murdered! Her husband opened the Lincoln and Cadillac dealership in Palm Beach from that "diamond" pendant!!!😊

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of these lovely pieces of jewelry. My husband says I am a Magpie because I enjoy pieces that sparkle. My unprofessional advice for anyone going through garage sales and thrift store pieces for themselves is to buy what appeals to you - I have several pieces, probably not worth much at all, but I adore them, so they bring joy to me which is priceless. If you are looking for pieces to resell, then quality is paramount. Thanks again! Pat from FL

I happened to come across your video by chance. I inherited a collection of my Grandmother's brooches in 1977. She passed away at age 94...she had them for many years. I always knew they were valuable but also knew I would never sell them because I love them all. I can still picture her wearing some of them when I was a little girl. I keep them all together in a lovely frame inside of a China cabinet. ❤

I wish I could see your grandmothers collection. I happened to come across this video as well. My grandmother loved jewelry. Costume and fine jewelry too. She gave me a beautiful necklace with imitation pearls. It broke and what did I do? I threw it away. I wish I was smarter and had it fixed. The mistakes I somehow made when I was young.

I bought a junk jewelry bag of bangles for $5. Two of them were 22K Indian gold bracelets, full of real diamonds, sapphires, ruby's, & peridot. I saved the stones, & scraped the bracelets for $900 & $750. I plan on making a huge nice custom ring, from the stones.

The rectangle shape stones are called baguettes. In real diamonds they tend to be more expensive because it is harder to hide the flaws when they are cut this way. Thanks for the video!

You made a great jewelry finds. Your riveted pin backs are generally late 1950s/early 1960s. The metallic backed stones are termed "foil backed" stones. The irridescent finish is known as "aurora borealis" and may sometimes be dated to the 1960s if the finish is blue tinged, later if rainbow tinged. The bright shiny white chrome finishes are often rhodium plate (Eisenberg pieces are known for rhodium plate). Austian crystals are the gold standard for faux gems, especially in vintage costume jewelry. Czechoslovakia is another important manufacturing center for rhinestones and beads. Darkened or cloudy rhinestones are often signs of water that has gotten into the setting under the stone. Costume rhinestone jewelry should never be worn on rainy days. Your Weiss broach is fabulous. If I was your mom, I would be first in line for that beauty. ❤️

So, I've been an antiquarian for 45 years. Also having the opening it helps the stones to breath. You are correct as well . Just because a piece isn't stamped doesn't mean it's not a great quality piece. My father and my uncle still are jewelers. Always check with a professional if you aren't sure your piece is high quality. My uncle buys a whole lot of estate jewlery. So do I.

Also, the glue back in the day they use a lot of glue. Doesn't mean it's not a good stone or piece epithet The yellowing is sometimes age from the stores or the piece. The glue back that wasn't clear as well so it yellowed. Weiss ,Trifari just to say a few are amazing pieces. just giving my little input

When I lived in NYC in the 1980's I first ran across 'the costume jewelry ladies'. After a Park Ave. estate had been picked over by Sothebys or such they descended on the 'non-precious'. The one thing I learned is that the rich people had the really good name costume jewelry, designer pieces etc.

I learned so much from this video, and all the comments--Thank you! I have all of my mother and most of my grandmother's jewelry. (I was the only girl! Tho my cousin got her ring! 😔) I love having them and would never sell them. Their value doesn't matter much either, just what I like and enjoy wearing! I have always especially enjoyed the deco pieces and the 1950's and 60's pieces--they look great! Vintage is always in fashion, but we tend to bring back certain time periods in fashion and costume jewelry always helps bring the outfit together. And one day, I hope MY 3 girls will enjoy them! Thanks again to all!

Mom always said I looked at the price to make sure something was expensive to decide if I liked it or not. I didn't! But for some reason, my eye always went to the most expensive item. I sat and watched this whole video because my eye went directly to the Penning and I wanted to see what you said about it. Surprise! It was the most expensive one you mentioned. I assure everyone, including Mom, I did not know the price AGAIN. LOL

I think it was the Swarovski company that first coated the backs of their crystal pendants and Cabochons with a reflective silver finish so their pieces would have extra shine. I know that they invented the AB finish, which stands for Aurora Borealis.

Great info, beautiful pieces. I’ve been collecting rhinestone brooches for over 30 years…back when you could get them for $5-$10 each! The period/canary piece looks to be an unsigned Sherman from the 50’s-60’s. Sherman was a Canadian designer from Montreal whose pieces now command anywhere from $75 to $300 for a complete set.

This caught my eye, as my kiddo actually likes broaches and pins. I've worked in jewelery supply stores a few years, and have been making jewelry for over 30 years (mostly putting components together, not soldering or metal making (yet)). Rhinestones often have foil backing. With that said, some rhinestones are more valuable than others.

The variety & quality of pieces available in your location is so nice! We get a few cool costume brooches in the 2ndhand shops here, but not a huge number in complete condition, and often pretty expensive to buy? Gosh...could I have used your help 10 years ago when I came into a large quantity of antique and vintage jewelry of all kinds. I had a small antique booth at a shop. When visiting an estate sale on the last day, the owner had a large collection of costume jewelry. He just wanted to be rid of. I did pay a good price, but even with my limited knowledge of jewelry, I could see pieces that had maker's marks that were very sought after. Shortly after I had to move and most of the jewelry had to be boxed up and is still in storage for me to sell. I do have an eye for nice pieces as my mother was quite the jewelry diva in her day. Some pieces are so beautiful I don't know if I could sell them, but in the end, what good are they in a dark box. I recognized many points you made that indicated lower quality, but I learned a lot about better-quality costume jewelry. My biggest challenge was pricing and where to sell. I was almost tempted to put the entire lot on eBay, or split it into several lots. I've definitely subscribed and will watch your other videos. Thank you so much Rusty!

Nice pieces! I would definitely test all vintage costume jewelry under a decent blacklight. Many different colored glass stones contain uranium, especially the light green ones. I was quite surprised when I went through all of my old costume jewelry at how much uranium I had. It can sell for a lot of money too. I even bought a little blacklight to hang next to a small display case and I put all of the jewelry that contains uranium glass in it.

In most cases, to figure out what side is up in brooches (or how they are worn on your clothing), you go by the pin on the back. Make sure the pin is horizontal, with the closure end of the pin on the right if you are looking at the front of the brooch.

I am from a family of Antique dealers, Going to offer my feedback. I have many Rhinestone pieces that are made of "glass" and is open on the back so not necessarily. Some of those are made in China they makes alot of very misleading pieces because many are made nice and beautiful "looking". They say crystal but are coated glass. Those gold tone without makers mark are probably antique costume from the 50's, the metal will be softer and not so shiny, open backs with the rivets, the parts spin on the back, ya those are worth quite a bit more, alot of those have been used in crafts and not a great amount of them out there anymore in nice quality, those are the ones you want just short of not having a makers mark. Sarah Cov. actually brings quite a bit now days. Silver rose cluster is another China piece. Black under stones is from water getting under the stones, also a sign of age. Usually If its from Austria, its very desirable and probably worth at least 45 with crystal stones. 65+ with nice clear ones or authentic Aurora colors, blue being most desirable in the Aurora Borealis, purple is rarest. Also look at how the pin is attached, that globby soldering is low quality. You want the rivited spinning pins some with the "v" mount.. The blue daisy pin, the nice one, is one of your best pieces. The last gold filled is a nice piece Most people will buy what appeals to them first then look at quality. :)

But just like turquoise, 94% of what is saturated the market is not authentic, sometimes you can tell by the silverwork but a signature doesnt mean worth, you need to know your artists, the newer native american posts use turquoise from again, China and Burma. You really gotta know your stones

I found that exact Coro brooch and the matching earrings at a yard sale! I also have my grandmother's Weiss brooch, which she used to wear with her pearls like Queen Elizabeth! By the way, Mr. Weiss pronounced the W as you said it at first. My late friend was actually acquainted with him! 😊

Hi there! I too collect beautiful costume jewelry, especially from the 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. The long slender stones are baguettes (think of the bread 🥖)Also some of the pearls were replaced with glue & not done very well, Thanks for your help! Christina

I love looking at customer jewelry pieces, when I was a child I used to collect different color glass and tried to make rings for them, the blue flower is beautiful I bought so many jewelry jars from goodwill but after a while I just ended giving them away, I’ve now started to buy jewelry online but it’s not the same, again thanks for sharing your collections.

Thanks; Like this video! One of the hands down nicest pins was the Austrian Crystal Scarf pn-which you didn't like much. If you view the pece as designed, with the pin behind level & toward the top of the circle, youmay notice the 3 smoe crystal stones were deliberate-& part of the design. Love that crystal scarf pin. It requires attention to designed orientation.

Yes, if puzzled by a design I look to the orientation of the clasp, horizontal with the c clasp or safety opening facing down.

Thank you! I have a collection of brooches and clip on as well as screw earrings. The crystals are absolutely sparklers. Back in the days women dressed up all the time. I wore them when I worked but niw it’s jeans and blouse. Sad…. I used to pretend they were diamonds. Some of the crystal sparkles more than my real diamonds. I need to sell so someone can enjoy, my children don’t want any of it.

I am really sad that I hadn't thought to look up this kind of video when I received a lot of old jewelry after my Dad passed. My grandfather bought my Grandma so much jewelry, and always the best, but I only kept the real pieces, as there were many and clearly real. I had not known to have the costume pieces appraised as well. Thank you for having these kinds of videos available for future use!

Age can discolor stones and make them darker. Very common in older pieces.

Moisure is the enemy of costume pieces, the settings get moist under the stones and darken or make the stones look milky.

Wonderful, thank you. The brooches look so pretty together on that platter. Can you advise me how to restore some brass necklaces that I love? They turned almost black when we had that wildfire storm (Northern California) about 5 years ago. Next, I’m watching your fine jewelry video. 🙂

What would an antique Monet cat face broach be worth the face is a large blue sapphire colored stone. Probably colored glass. It has silver metal cat ears, eyes lips and whiskers and a pin to attach it on back. The whiskers could be delicate and get caught on clothing but this piece was well cared for. Ice had it since the mid 70's
