Great video!!!! A few things I noticed for my set up with the goosebox. You don’t have to drill for the Reese goosebox to mount the chains. Also the warranty is honored by Lippert with Reese so that’s a good thing as you mentioned and you’re right it’s a personal choice. My air bag holds air for months and usually only required about 10psi but that’s just me. I appreciate the honest review for the Gen Y. No doubt it’s a solid option.

I had the similar squeak on my Gen-y I sat in the bed while my wife moved slow down the road and listened, I found it coming from the ball, cause of powder coating inside, I added grease and went away

We have the same squeak and I thought maybe it was from the ball as well. I’ve got about 2300 miles on our hitch so there’s no doubt it’s broken. I plan on greasing the ball see if it goes away. I’m curious, if you see this post, do you have chucking on (Concrete) Road with yours? I still have it but it’s getting better. There are certain concrete roads roads it’s worse than others.

If you are looking for better ride quality and less chucking get the goose box. The pivot point in the ball mount allows a forward back cushion with the air bag and not strictly up and down. I installed one on my 43ft 5th wheel and the ride quality was drastically improved

I have a reese goose box gen 1 for 3 years. I did it space as well. But i did it from the start. It has holes to bolt safety chains, no drilling needed. My local hardware store did not stock strong enough chains or hooks I like the air ride. I have to get in the bed to hook up the chains. I just add air then. The ride is amazing. Zero chunking. I as adjust the right height on the fly. Say backing in to a steep driveway (my last house) dump bag, ass end pops up 2". No need to throw timber down to drive over. Iwould be suprized at all if you where exceeding the "Vertical load limit: 5,000 lbs" of the off set ball Been there done that "short bed problems" A tall ball or bolt the hitch in lower would be a better option if you are not worried about tagging the cab. Also "been there done that"

I just got a fifth wheel trailer and I have to be able to haul a slide in camper for different camping when not using the fifth wheel so I didn’t want to mess with the hitch that was going to be in the bed all the time I was going from camper to fifth wheel. When I saw the Gen Y on line I figured that I was the best way to go. I had the place I bought the fifth wheel install the Gen Y and the B & W gooseneck fron the start. I have only gone short trip so far but I think its going to work. I have notice there is some bouncing and heavy movement that I have not had before. When I am hauling the camper and are horse trailer at the same time I weigh 24,000 pounds. With this new fifth wheel trailer I am going to be pushing 26,000 if not more. All the trailers I have pulled so far have always been bumper pulls that have pushed 13,000 at the most. This fifth wheel weighs 16,000 dry weight so it’s the heaviest I have ever pulled. I did see on some reviews that there is a break in the Gen Y hitch is around 2000 miles so I am hoping that the ride will get better when it gets broke in.

I put one on my 5th wheel a few months ago. I have only towed with it twice. I had to do the b&w ball that set back 4 inches on mine because of how far forward my gooseneck ball was installed and I had a heavy duty rear bumper. I noticed my b&w ball sits a bit higher off the bed floor and actually let it move around some. Since then I have installed a different rear bumper and can actually use the original b&w ball. But I haven't had the chance to tow with it due to my truck having some issues. But I will say the little bit of towing I have done was a smoother ride than my Andersen hitch I had.

I also put the GEN-Y hitch on my 2020 GD Solitude 380fl 5th wheel. I also had to purchase the B&W 4" extension ball, to get the clearance from my cab. Unfortunately, today, I was backing up, and my rear wheels sank in a pot hole, and the RV hit the rear cab, and blew my rear window out. Now, I am thinking that et my height, I need to drop the GEN-Y hitch, by using only 4 bolts, instead of 6 bolts. The question is, Can I use 4 bolts to attach the GEN -Y to my RV, instead of 6 bolts? Thereby, dropping the GEN-Y down an inch, and thusly giving me added height to my RV.

Great video, really appreciate the information. I currently have a similar setup as your old one ( 2019 MHC 379 RD & B&W companion sider) and have been considering switching the hitch to either the goosebox or the gen-y for two reasons: 1. The bed space & 2. I have to remove the hitch to pull my gooseneck equipment trailer. Definitely leaning towards the gen-y hitch after watching this video, just concerned about clearance (cap to cab) since I tow with a short box pickup. Any thoughts???

Thanks for your review, lots of good points here. I noticed you’ve got the short bed as well, before you put the B&w extension on it did you have any issues with the camper trying to come in contact with the cab of the truck when turning, especially backing up? Some of the campgrounds we go to are snug and require some tight turns and hard angles. I’d be coming from the non-sliding version of the companion, backing up gets tight on my cab, especially if I have to go up a small grade. On the road quality does your truck have the factory installed airbags? Mine doesn’t, and I get a lot of chucking with the B&W.
@whateverfits1978
@whateverfits1978 Жыл бұрын
I never came in contact with the bed, but my turning was inhibited. Honestly, I was a little scared to go full lock going forward. Backing up I always erred on the side of caution and was always able to get into spot(lots of backing up, going forward though). As far as the ride, I don't have airbags, but I did have lots of chucking with the BW. Sometimes when taking off you'd hear a loud clank that would scare everyone to death. I like that the goose ball doesn't do any of that.

@whateverfits1978
@whateverfits1978 3 жыл бұрын
Well, when I say gaining bed space, I mean mostly when unloaded and I can just remove a ball and have a flat bed. With the slider hitch, it was so bulky that I never really wanted to take it out because it was just a hassle. But to your point, you do have more bed space when towing as well. The way the camper sits now is pretty level so the nose doesn't stick up or anything like that.

Great review, With the added weight on the pin Box from the Gen Y being heavier causing frame issues or being sub in some way not able to deal with the added weight on the frame?
@whateverfits1978
@whateverfits1978 2 ай бұрын
I guess it is possible. With all the frame flex issues going on right now, I would be a little more leery of anything that could be construed as causing problems if you intend on utilizing any type of warranty. Only certain manufacturers allow pin box replacements without voiding your warranty. My rig was out of warranty so it wasn't an issue for me there. That begin said. I had my rig pretty loaded when we traveled and never had a frame issue.

I wasn't impressed either initially. It took about 1k miles for it to get better for me. Not sure what you switched from, but my ride isn't better one way or the other from the BW setup I had. I actually loved the ride of the BW, but it took up the entire bed. The ride now, after about 3k miles or so, is much better than when I initially installed. I would imagine the cold weather does have an impact on the rubber bushings, but I have done much cold towing with it. I would think once they start moving and get warmed up they should be fine.

I recently replaced my Andersen hitch with the Gen-Y executive 5th wheel. It is a little harder to hook up the Gen-Y compared to the Anderson because the Anderson has a funnel that guides onto the ball. I am confident with more practice I will be able to get the ball under the Gen-Y on the first try. I have only driven about 600 miles with the Gen-Y. I noticed the exact same squeaking noise. Hopefully it gets better after the breakin period. I like the ride quality of the Gen-Y more than the Andersen. The main problem I have with the Gen-Y is the difficulty detaching. I have to pull the cable while my wife lifts the RV. How do you detach by yourself?
@whateverfits1978

My controls are on a door pretty close to the front of the camper. I think there is one shot in the video where you can see me raising the camper off the ball, maybe it's the first video I did of the install. Anyway, I can work the controls with my right hand and pull the cable with my left. It will definitely depend on where your RV controls are located. Mine just happen to be in a good position.

I think it depends on your camper. My camper had three sets of mounting holes, I put it in the lower setting. Plus, the extended hitch ball I got also sat a little higher.
