The Arecibo telescope is not being rebuilt, but a STEM learning center is being built in its place. The primary function of Arecibo was radio astronomy, and part of radio astronomy was the SETI program. Contact focuses more on the SETI side of things and was also filmed at the Arecibo Telescope. Just remember, antennas do not attract a signal, they just pick it up, but the bigger the antenna, the more signal you can pick up. Radio waves suffer from the Inverse Square Law, if you double the distance from the transmitter, the signal strength decreases to one-fourth of its original value.

I heard that the radio bubble expanding away from Earth, when compared with the size of the Milky Way, amounts to a BB in an olympic sized swimming pool. Not likely any aliens passing by would accidentally wander into our signal.
@pauljanetzkeАй бұрын
@@GusCarlson-o5o True, if you think about it, the EM bubble would be about 85 light years, given that the early RADAR in 1939 would appear as a structured signal not generatable by a natural source. AM radio was blasting out about 20 years prior to that but would be undetectable by all but the largest antennas or sensitive gear that could filter out the background noise from that very weak signal. The Milky Way is about 100,000 light years across to the earliest radar covers 0.17% of that distance. But in that space, there are 5 known and 1 suspected exoplanet and several dozen F, G and K stars. These are the star types most likely to have a habitable planet.

After I watched this, a friend asked me for a two-sentence review. I said, "Charlie Sheen carries what is essentially a not-bad B movie. I had fun, so it's worth a watch if nothing else is on."

A movie that is largely ignored by the internet. Worked the theater the summer it came out.

When two movies of similar theme is released close to each other, one of them is always consider the lesser, this movie is to "Contact", what "Armageddon" is to "Deep Impact", and "Volcano" is to "Dante's Peak".

@@w415800 Contact was boring crap I refuse to watch twice. Also didn't even rate the local theaters while Arrival played on the same pattern as Dragonheart. Didn't last long in the big one (one week) and then a week in the medium sized ones and a month in the smaller ones. The big scifi movies were ID4 and ST Generations that Summer but there were several second tiers and action films like Eraser, Chain Reaction, and most I saw for free. ID4 was the one I had to pay for as the other theater got it. Also while 96 was a great Summer for films a TV show beat all of them for Best Sci Fi Presentation too that year. The coveted Asimov went to Babylon 5 over Independence Day with Will Smith and Star Trek Generations with Sir Patrick and Shatner. I worked that summer in the theater while I was in college and at the time it had 7 theaters plus in town there was a second company that only lasted a few more years and a third opened later that year.

@@w415800 Independence Day was the big Sci-fi movie of 1996. It didn´t help to have the star from Major League & Hot Shots Charlie Sheen in a serious leading role, either.

This was largely ignored back in 1996. Both Mission Impossible and Independence Day crushed the box office in 1996

Carl Sagan said that the total amount of energy that has fallen into every radio telescope on Earth since they've been active, is less than the total amount of kinetic energy released by a single snowflake striking the ground. We are talking about energies so small; they barely exist.

This was the alternate to Contact and IMHO the better film.

@@Raktus Contact was out right boring and the ending violated all we know of science while another method could work using physics for FTL communication either with Gravity or Quantum methods. Doesn't matter the power radio has a set limit and delay both ways. Gravity bends and traps even light as a force not bound by the light speed limits. Also some quantum properties using twin atoms react as mirrors regardless of placement in space-time. The concept was ok but the writer needed a consultant beyond some early pre-doctorate or Government employment notes of Sagan who himself said was trash fantasy.
