46:12 Yes these commercials are for an event that now takes place in game. At the time of these commercials it wasn't a real thing but as of the last 5-6 years where we have had full planets in game there are convention halls inside the cities and they have rotating show floors for various manufacturers for each day where you can wander around and go inside any of the ships of that day. This coincides with a freefly event where anyone can play for free for around 2 weeks and come to the show floors and rent any ship/vehicle that is on the floors for a couple of days. Some of the really large ships you have seen in the SQ42 prologue you watched are not released yet to players but are involved in a NPC "Fleet Flyby" that happens at orbital stations as part of the event. One of those larger ships the Javelin (The ship you act as a gunner on board in SQ42) docks during this flyby for about 45mins and you can tour a portion of the completed interior and there is some npc's spouting lore.
@the_babbleboom
@the_babbleboom 2 күн бұрын
fair mention would be that the "expo halls" are copy pasted even when location changes, and at best recoloured, if even that, for the next event. it's the same layout and there really isn't much but the ships standing around with some sparse NPCs standing around and bad audio quality of voice lines appearing detached from any characters actually speaking. it's not a big hall where you can see from one end to the other, it's several bigger ones across obnoxiously long and empty hallways. it's really off putting design choices and does not come close to what is shown in the video at all.

For the Galactic tour videos, they were made for the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo to showcase the ships the dev have created and implemented into the game that are ready to fly. This year would be IAE 2955 and be held in November. During this time you can try the game for free and each day is dedicated to a specific manufacturer where you can rent the ships for free to play and fly around with. The shift in quality is due to them learning a lot over the years, the tools they use to make the cinematics getting easier to produce with and being more flexible/powerful, and also the game having more usable assets over time. But more importantly, the older ads were made by the developers in their spare time. The later ads like the last handful in the latter half of the video were made with a new marketing team who's sole job is to produce these now regularly using the developer tools. They don't directly work on the game and have more experience working on commercial productions rather than being pure developers. This allows the developers to focus on creating the game while another team works on creating cool cinematic marketing material with what the developers make. Great seeing you react to this, I've always had a soft spot for film making but it sometimes feels like voodoo magic to me being a laymen when it comes to talking about camera work or lighting since my background is in audio. And it is a nice learning experience as you explain the various shots, lighting styles and point out details that I would have totally missed. Love it, looking forward to the second half!

I forget where they mentioned it (might have been in an old reverse the verse or something) but I recall them talking about how the ship trailers and such were often made by newer staff members as they trained on the tools before they started work on S42 cinematics. So some of these are done as a learning tool.

One cool aspect is that for the most part, the ship trailers are done as of they where in world adds made by their respective companies. The military companies are like real world defence company adds. Punchy, focused on dominating the battlefield and statistics at the forefront, with the main UEE contractor's adds basically being recruitment adds. The leading exploration and science focused brand are centered around discovery. The civilian companies are more like car adds, either with a focus on luxuries or practicality and what the ship can do for you. The haulage company is like a trucker add, focused on profit and efficiency. Then the dubious brand that is known to sell to criminals and pirates and isn't invited to the big ship showcase held annually advertises themselves as giving the little guy a chance to stand up for themselves, with the "bad guys" in their adds flying the ships made by their competitors that are usually used by the military or security. And the knockoff top gear was a cool idea for world building because the expo is an in game event that you can visit with a new manufacturer having their ships on display and available to rent every couple of days. So there would be an episode of galactic tour, then you could go visit that expo. In fact, pretty much all the trailers are made in engine, which is why you see them improve graphically as they go on, and why some things may seem a bit off (like the face models you noticed), because they're working with an in development game engine to make them. As a side note, I'd be interested to see your thoughts on the trailers for War Thunder. They have some really interesting ones including a live action one they made a few years ago. And the recent ones have been much more cinematic.

Some of these started about 10 years ago, so some of them are quite dated. Hence why there are some repeats and a clear change in quality. Squadron 42= single player Star citizen = multi-player As for the game, yes, you can seamlessly transition between space, atmo, in ship, on foot, in vehicles, etc. You can mine, salvage, bounty hunt, haul cargo, etc. With more gameplay constantly being added. And regarding the ship manufacturers, you are on point with each having ing a theme. All of these ships can be purchased in-game, using game currency, or if you want a head start, you can pay with cash to get immediately, though the price ramps up very quickly. Love the reaction, and would definitely sit through another to finish out the remaining commercials

I recommend checking out the Star Engine demo to understand just what the game is capable of. Thanks for all of your coverage for Squadron and Star Citizen so far! EDIT: Some of these I would argue weren't intended to be commercials, even though they did end up in the playlist. The panning around ones were more to show off to backers updates to existing ships or show off PBR textures when they were first really introduced to the game.

YES! you can also fly down to any planet or moon and get out and explore on the surface, in structures and in caves. in space you can also EVA and explore derelicts in zero-g YES! the way the ships look in the commercials, is the same way that they ships look in game, because the commercials are all made in-engine (though the engine has improved and so have their textures and processes).

Loving the trip down memory lane over the last 12 years...one thing thats really cool about all these (which, as others have pointed out, are made so the cinematic team could get experience before making SQ42) is that all the music you hear is composed by one composer; Pedro Camacho. He makes all the star citizen music in-game as well. Its super great to see the huge variety of different motifs and styles he comes up with! When those first commercials came out (the origin 300i, hornet, aurora) those were the earliest days. When the 300i commercial was out, we didn't even have a game client to install. The hangar module had yet to release...so this was the very first time we ever saw a character or ship model. The very first time we heard music or the soundscape they were thinking of. The aurora and hornet commercials came out like 2 months after the very first downloadable client...at that time we could walk around our ships and even get into them. But they were stuck in the hangar and weren't flyable yet. These commercials from the start would show us what was cutting edge at the time (character models, animations, lighting, etc.) and are still used today to show us the best version of the game that they're hoping for. I was sold on it from that very first 300i commercial...when I saw how serious they were with how they presented the worldbuilding of star citizen and how they wanted us to experience the game. Its been a fun journey!

The best way I can sell Star Citizen is by telling a story: You wake up in a bed in your apartment, after getting dressed you leave and go to the lobby. Exiting the apartment building you make your way to the space port. You Stop at shops along the way to stock up. After arriving at your hanger you board your ship. Climbing the ladder and walking through the cabin to the cockpit. After sitting down and powering the ship up, you call ATC to take off and the hanger doors open in front of you. You takeoff, and fly around the city for a few minutes before pointing your nose up and heading to space. You make a quick stop at the local space station to pick up some cargo. Which you load into your ships hold. you make your way across the system to the moon of a neighboring planet. Dropping down into the atmosphere you land at a small village. There you get out and deliver your cargo. None of what I've described is particularly ground breaking. HOWEVER, in other games their would be a load screen or some sort of gamified U to accomplish the task. in Star Citizen there are zero loading screens outside of the first one and everything is handled in the game world diegetically. This even extends to things like global illumination. The planets actually turn in the game world, and whether it's day or night is determined by real time ray tracing of lights FROM THE ACTUAL STAR.

The game has come a long way and it is ridiculously immersive now. The adverts vary wildly in quality as sometimes they were just what they gave to new employees to get them up to speed on the cinematics tools, lighting, and so on. Some might have been to get people up to speed on performance capture and so on. Some of the videos were also showing new features rather than being ship adverts per-se, like the mining ship where it showed the (then new) emergency lighting mode. They obviously don't always have the budget for voiceover, performance capture, and so on. Most of the music was composed by their composer Pedro Camacho. And yes, it is an MMO game where you can team up with some friends walk around in a planet, crew a ship with different roles (Pilot, Engineer, Gunner...), fly up into space, fly through a wormhole to another solar system, enter the atmosphere of another planet/moon, shoot up a pirate or corporate outpost, and fly away with some paydata and maybe some valuable cargo you've swiped along the way. All with no loading screens. You will /eventually/ be able to fly the big ships like Gary Oldman's one in the Squadron 42 video (the Bengal). They sell Gillian Anderson's ship (the Javelin) with real money, but nothing bigger. The really big ones have to be built in orbit at a space station that you also have built first. That's a lot of mining and trade. Looking forward to the next video. They took a bit of a hiatus from doing ship commercials when their video guys were busy doing Squadron, but got back to knocking it out of the park with the later Intergalactic Aerospace Expo ones. It *now* is a place in the game that you can visit, but it wasn't to start off with. That said - The game is not finished yet and the multiplayer side is still in Alpha and somewhat buggy despite having been in development for over 12 years. You can see that they're making progress with the visuals, performance and cinematics. Some gameplay loops are working but most of the gameplay focus was on the single player campaign. In the mean time they have had programmers designing and building server meshing network infrastructure that was capable of hosting whole solar systems with thousands of people all crewing their own ships and goign about their business. They finally have the server meshing tech in player's hands that allows them to have multiple servers handling the same area. Still, it's a bit buggy. I'd definitely advise backing the game, which you do by getting a ship with a game package. You will be able to buy/build any of the other released ships in game, but yes some people end up spending thousands. This was a joy to watch! And really shows the progression. There was a few times during ~2016-2019 where the cinematics team were fully focused on Squadron 42, so the ship commercials took a back-seat. So those simple basic ads with no voiceover are usually just cranked out in a day (probably without any cinematic team involved). Some of my favorite commercials are still coming up, so really excited to see you react to them! :D

The Intergalactic Aerospace Expo is an in-game event that happens every November, and runs for about a week. Each day features a different lineup of ships from one or two of the in-universe manufacturers. The location and layout of the Expo are different every year (and they haven't done the "Galactic Tour" thing in ages, but yes, you can go there in-game and see the ships up close.

Fun bit of info for you, since you asked. The recurring character that presented the Mustang ships is the CEO of Consolidated Outland, the company behind the Mustangs. His name is Silas Koerner, and was a trust fund baby who explored various industries before finding success as a ship manufacturer. They even have some details out about him, like where he was born and who his father was (first governor of his homeworld) Also yes, that absolutely was Lance Henriksen (Bishop from Alien) who voiced the Freelancer ad. I wish we had more from him and other distinctive, well-known voices, but it's still fun.

To answer the question you had: No, sadly, the adverts are not in game currently, except in IAE (Intergalactic Aerospace Expo). Some of them I get why, as the ships were not accurate to how they are in game (for example, the freelancers engines don't turn like that, nor is the Aurora customizable), but a huge amount of them should be in game. Edit: Also, to answer, yes, the big ship (The RSI Polaris) is in fact flyable. They just released it in game. And there's even bigger ones on the way, including a ship that's nearly a kilometer long.

Aloha! Fellow filmmaker here -- you might really enjoy the machinima being made in SC -- some of us have dived into the the trenches of this highly unstable, difficult tech and are making all kinds of projects, including feature-length movies! It's truly a labor of love -- personally, I average about 60-100 hours of work for each 15 mins of movie. Speaking as an ambassador of the SC machinima community and fellow filmmaker, I really think some like you would dig it. Here's a link to an Alien franchise cross-over we did, which was filmed entirely in SC (with some light 3D modeling for the Xenomorph), that takes a familiar franchise and, in this particular case, merges it with my own channel's IP a bit (blonde chick, Ava, is our most well-known character). Plenty more to explore as well, on our channel and others, if you take a liking to it. We've even got an old detective noir film. Either way, keep up the great work! kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4Kki4t5l7uDi7csi=xE56U7dBpghIIIBj

@@fnunez familiar -- love the BedBananas vid, but I prefer a more traditional-style filmmaking approach to machinima making. Although more challenging to undertake, this method allows creators to tell more nuanced stories and take a more deliberate approach to portraying their characters and world. One where people sometimes forget they're watching a video game.

On the getting out of your ship thing probably know the answere now but yes and any time anywhere (even in the clouds.....gravity works at that height just like real life...) the clip "lost and found" is part of the game going through wrecks (all pre built for now, so same ones same places except player ships) which does have gear you can find (helmets, guns and exclusive stuff) so it is a fave thing fo my is to explore and loot wrecks. I mentioned there are player ships one fave story of my time was with one and to explain, persistence was patched in a little while ago where if you leave a can of coke on a rock in a certain place, you can come back to it (its not permanent for ever but is most of the day or such) which players ships and gear are also left behind (some times...too many) I found someones ship landed as I scanned around the mine rocks with a mining car, so I decided to have a look.... it was a Cutlass black (for those who know) back door was open....there was a ROC (mining car) so they were mining just like me. I wondered through checked the ROC all their ore! score! mines now....but let me look more. Entered the next room which is a combo cockpit and living area.....12 bottles of water scattered all over floor....with one dead spaceman in his Pembroke high heat resistance explorer space suit (I needed one) I cannot explain what happened for this person to die...but I am going to guess he died of thirst....as he was face down with nothing but empty bottles of water around him and that was a PLAYER!

Yes! The expo's an in-game event where you can walk around the ships on display, go inside them and even rent the flyable ones 48 hours for ¢ 0, so no need for those clips to go into specifics. There are even side rooms with display cases showing wire frame models of concept ships that are not finished for physical display yet. As there are hundreds of ships in the game, the expo is over some dusin days with different manufacturers each day (which is why there are so many episodes of Galactic Tour about it). Got to put it out there as well, some of the other ads have very little information because they're teasers for people already knowing about the ship - often released before the ship is officially announced. Also, the gigantic ship you wondered if you can fly, the answer is Soon (tm) - they are absolutely meant to be accessible and flyable by players, but will likely not be available to many.

Another reason for the quality differences is, that some were meant as commercials, and some were just design/wip/release teasers to show to the players. The idea about the story commercials was to make commercials as if they were real ads inside the game world. As if they were made by the ship manufacturers. The origin ads for instance are meant to mimic BMW ads as origin is a luxury ship builder. And every manufacturer has his own design language. In the ships and the commercials. Also some videos were just made to show off new game or ship features, or to show updated versions of older ships because they had to rework some ships several times to get them to the same quality as the newest ships, and make them fit for the newest game features. Those videos are most of the "only music and moving camera" ones.

The really important points aobut this vids /commercials are, they are all produced InEngine. You can see the age if you compare the particles, faces, detailgrade and so many other stuff. There are different Ship company teams, every ingame company has a team behind it, they are like real life different brands. Thats why you see so much differences in the commercials. The Galactic Tour for the Expo is a real thin ingame, on week every year we get a expo ingame to visit and snoop arround seeing all ships, new ones and the old ones. You could even do your own videos ingame, cause RSI gave us players tools for camera control and other stuff so we can do movie like videos about our adventures, there are player Organisations out there who produce real TV series about there adventures.

Yeah I really love these commercials. I love the way they mimicked commercials from real life...like the "Built Ford Tough" commercials and the Top Gear show. They aren't "ripping them off". They are doing an homage to those familiar shows and commercials which is very flattering if you are the one being imitated. My favorite is the "Constellation Aquilla" commercial. Very scifi. The wink at 2001 and the Star Trek series plots. And yes you will hear a lot of familiar voices in Star Citizen since they have gotten so many celebrities to get involved. To answer your question...YES...to buy ships you go to a dealer for that manufacturer and they usually have a show room where you can look at the different option in real time. Some of the commercials you watched were during the Ship Exo's also, where they market and show existing, as well as new upcoming ship offers. As far as the game, it's truly a real world sandbox game where you can take off in a ship from planet side, fly up through the atmosphere into space, speed jump to another planet in the system, and then fly down to the planet surface in real time all without any cut scenes or without transitioning to the planet surface through a whole different instance. It's all done in real time. That's what makes Star Citizen unique.

Star Citizen feels like a "Have your own spaceship simulator" and it exels at that. It really gives you the feeling of owning your own spacecraft. In gameplay and gameplay loops on the other hand it's still quite bad and broken, nothing really works consistently. But if you want to own and fly a spaceship, which really feels like it's made for you, it's great. The commercials are not wrong, feels good to have a ship like these, especially the ones you really like. They are beauties and also the sound design is fantastic.

Love that you're reviewing these commercials! So some of these are made as adverts that can show up in-game, made to look like ads, but others were made to show off to fans which mix in in-game footage and some new features into the game, so not quite as impressive but cool for the time. Every ship you see is a ship you either can fly now, or will be able to in the future. The largest one seen here the "Bengal Carrier" is the largest player flyable ship in the game, not available yet, and requires a crew of over 400, it will pretty much be org exclusive ships. The future plans for Star Citizen is to have large orgs be able to build these ships for use. Currently you cannot buy a Bengal Carrier, the largest ship players can buy is the "Javelin Destroyer" which is a smaller capital class ship which costs over $2500 real cash to buy. Only sold during very specific events and are limited in number and usually sell out within 60 seconds of going online. It's pretty ridiculous but all ships will be craftable/buyable in-game eventually. The Galactic Gear and Galactic Tour segments are of course based on Top Gear and Grand Tour, it's very funny and a highlight for players. The Intergalactic Aerospace expo is a real place in-game. It happens every year in November, the locations aren't exactly the same in the game as it is in the adverts for the early episodes but later on they match the locations. There are in-game ship dealers you can walk around some of the ships to look at before you buy. They sell ships for real money, but you can buy them in-game after a 3-month exclusive window for purchases, though not every ship is available in-game currently. You can leave your ship, you can land anywhere on a planet. Actually it goes even further than that, the first time you log in, and you pick your starting location, if you chose a city on a planet you need to catch public transport before you can get to your ship. I have missed many a train or shuttle by a hair and had to wait for the next one. That ship in the sand shown in the add at 55:40 odd is the Wreck of the Javelin class Destroyer the "UEES Flyssa" lost in an accident and left abandoned on a desert moon called Daymar. You can travel to it if you know the wreck location. Mining in Star Citizen has one of the more developed gameplay loops, you need to scan around a planet/moon/asteroid field to locate a minable resource, then you need to set mining power and balance it so it's not done too hot to overheat and potentially detonate the resource (which can lead to ship damage/destruction). Once mined you can deliver the raw ore to a station or planet that needs it to be sold off, or you can pay for it to be refined at a refinery. Once refined, you then use a cargo vessel to deliver the refined material to wherever needs it for a higher profit. Eventually these resources will be used for crafting and will be required to build outposts and ships. You can travel from on-foot through a city, into the sky, out to space, across the system, and now into a whole new solar system without a single loading screen. It's absolutely incredible tech. A lot of what you see in these ads are captured in-game, the nicer looking ones are built in-engine. Cannot wait to see part 2!

A quick search shows that there are currently 252 known ship types. That probably includes variants, and probably large modules swaps. Apparently 192 of the ships are available in game. More are coming, and once the game releases, they plan on having newer models of the same ship. So maybe I'll have the 2259 model, but someone else with have the 2262 model. They will look slightly different, but still be basically the same. As for customizing them, yes. There are skins already and there will also be paints as well. You won't be able to have any colour you want for every ship, but they say they are going to have a large selection. You also can swap out most of the components: guns, thrusters, power plant, shields, missiles, mining lasers, etc. There will not be a best ship, just the best ship for you. You can gear it more towards max performance, sacrificing longevity, so for longevity, go for power efficiency, maybe stealth, plat up the armour and allow your ship to take more of a pounding at the sacrifice of mobility. You decide. You have the small bikes, up to absolutely huge capital ships, which you can fly. Though if you have a capital ship, you will need a crew, because you aren't going to be flying and manning the turrets at the same time.

Fantastic, I have been looking forward to this since your Squadron 42 reaction video. Cloud Imperium Games, the studio behind both Star Citizen (MMO) and Squadron 42 (Single Player), have used the space ship commercials as a training ground for their cinematic team to hone their skills in cinematics and tools to prepare them for the creation of Squadron 42. Based on your reaction of the SQ42-playthrough, the effort was well worth it. Unfortunately, the playlist that CIG have named "Commercials" contain both ship commercials and "showcase videoes" intended to present the current stage of production of certain ships to their backers, or hype and build attention during big sales events. This is the reason why some are clearly recognized as commercials with voiceovers, and why some are just moving camera around a parked vehicle. I was also surprised to see they had added the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo coverage from Galactic Gear in the same playlist. Ohwell. Looking forward to part two!

This was a real treat, as many of these I haven't seen them since their original debut. You can see the progress of technology as the faces, variety, and production quality rise up. Some of these videos were technically not supposed to be ship commercials but doubled as them. Some of these ships are old, & have been redone/improved. But I still marvel at how detailed this stuff is. It's all in engine. That's what the ships look like in the game! The Galactic Gear stuff was for IAE. Intergalactic Aerospace Expo. Basically a car show for space ships. For a week you can go to the expo areas in game, walk around & rent these ships for free. Every day they highlighted a different manufacturer. DO THE SHIPS REALLY GET THAT BIG? Yes!. Morphologis does a great video of the 890 Jump where he does an in-depth review of the interior of one of their biggest ships. You'll be amazed at how much detail goes into these ships. CAN YOU BUY THESE ONLINE? Yes, you can buy these online with real money, or in-game with credits earned from playing the game. These ships are funding the development of the game. So by buying online, you get lifetime insurance. Otherwise you'd have to pay for insurance when the game releases as 1.0. You go to actual ship dealerships in-game. CAN YOU GET OUT OF YOUR SHIP? Yes, at any time. You can even get OUT of your ship & walk out into space (called EVA) in Zero-G. You can patch up & repair the exterior of the ship. People can board your ship too. If you want to see what you can do in the game, I'd recommend watching the StarEngine demo (20 minutes), "A taste of Star Citizen's Scale" by Miaku (9 minutes) & the "War for Jumptown" by BedBananas (1 hour). Less about the cinematography but informative & entertaining. Trust me, you want to watch these. HOW MANY SHIPS ARE THERE? Right now, 225 ships. 188 are in-game. HOW MANY YEARS HAS THIS BEEN GOING? 2012: Game announced. 2014: 1st version was just space combat (0.8) 2015: Then space stations in a small persistent universe (2.0) 2017: Explorable planets released (3.0) 2021: First full solar system solar system, Stanton (4 planets, 16 moons) 2024: Second star system, Pyro (6 planets, 6 moon) FACE MODELS LOOK A BIT BLAND: They do get better as their technology improves. Keep in mind what you're seeing was amazing in 2014-2016. Now our characters look much better with all sorts of hair styles, tattoos, beards, makeup, piercing, dyed hair, etc. CAN YOU ACTUALLY GO INTO THE ATMOSPHERE & DIFFERENT PLANETS WITH NO LOADING? Yes. Seriously, watch the StarEngine demo!

Will be able to do and fly and buy everything you see in these commercials-and more, in game, with in-game money. That’s beautiful!

Yes you walk around cities, on a planet, go to shops, buy armor and guns, head to the spaceport, get in your ship, get in the pilot seat, turn it on, fly out and up into space (no loading screens or videos) fly to another planet or moon (or star system through a wormhole as of 4.0), land, get out, run around, mine rocks, shoot enemies, board ships, EVA in space, run around fixing the ship as the pilot flies it etc etc. It's why people like it.

It's fun watching the old commercials to see how they got better as time got on and tech and ship designs (and redesigns) advanced alongside them. I still love the old Freelancer commercial. Something about that guitar strumming and the voice over just sells it for me.

This is arguably THE BEST VIDEO that CIG ever made for the game. At least, it has the potential to be the most engaging/moving. I think you will appreciate this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ3bemqObMqUmZosi=-UMx4yzX568kHGDO

1:20:00 - regarding the face models: you've seen the Trailer for Squadron 42. In the last year or so the character models got a massive boost. The Character Editor is amazing and still gets even more 3D Scanned Face Models.

Answering some of your questions: Yes there are in game dealer locations with showrooms for you to buy ships, new ships that has just been released has to be purchased with real money on their website, and after around half a year, it will be purchasable in game via in game currency. Yes, you can fly in space, approach the planet and do whatever you want, there are legal and illegal missions as well. There is also a Prison with a sneaky escape route. And players can hunt you down as bounty hunter guild missions! Talking about how well thought out this game is! Yes, there are different teams. Aopoa, Anvil, Aegis, Drake, Origin etc are all "Ship manufacturers" in the game, each have their own design language and target "audience" that buys their ship. The way they advertise the ships are also different as it is aligned to their manufacturer philosophy. Yes, you mine with the prospector and sell the orbs after refining in a space station! There are so many occupations in the game, for contract missions, there are Bounty Hunting, Mercenary, Salvaging, Explore type ones like Investigation, Racing, and non-contract ones like Stock Trades, Mining etc. And player interaction ones like PvP (Ship and on foot), Medical Rescue etc. The RSI Aurora has multiple varients and each serves a different purpose, like the CO Mustang (the one that looks like a bumblebee), there are multiple variants. Yes, I can confirm that all the ships here (except the aircraft carrier "Kraken" from Drake) are in game or we call it "Flight ready". There are tonnes of ship in the game, a rough estimate will be near 150 ships, some can be fully customized like car configurations like the Origin 300 series, the 325a, 315p, 300 etc. Others can modified via components, guns and paints at the moment. In the future, custom persistent ship decorations and custom paint job will be launched and implemented. Like I mentioned in the 2nd and 4th answer, you can do a lot more than just flying around, and there are cities with different vibes on each planets, like Orison, the city in the clouds, imagine a hovering city on Jupiter, and there are "Blade runner" or "Cyberpunk" styled Area18 and Lorville! Yes,. this game has no loading, no cutscenes, you can go from 1 city on Planet A in Solar System A to the outpost on Planet Z in Solar System B via a Jump point without loading. No loading screens, flying in space, re-entry effects when approaching planets, land, walk out in space suit and do you things, interact with NPCs and players, and head to space again. 1 minute ago, you might still be in a ship to ship combat and next minute you might be in FPS combat on foot! That is what the game is about, as if you are living a second life. I joined the game last May and got hooked to it entirely. I have been playing space games and simulators for more than 10 years and none has achieved what Star Citizen has gone to! Definitely worth a try! This game's value is not only the visuals but also technological breakthroughs like no loading screen or cutscenes, they meshed the servers. Currently servers are running 500+ Players in 2 Solar Systems! A total of 10 planets each with different features and looks, some are even like cyberpunk while some are like the ice age! Not to mention moons, space stations, asteroid bases and so much more!

Not everything you watched was a ship commercial. Some of them were tech demos illustrating a new lighting, rendering, or gameplay feature. Some of them like Galactic Gear were lore building for in-game events. Some of the cinematics are years apart, so you see the evolution of CIG's engine technology and early problems with framerates in engine and such. Early on, CIG used ship commercials as training tools for their ship modeling and cinematics teams to learn the game engine tools, also. It's really fascinating to see the evolution of the ship commercials and cinematics. To answer the question about number of ships, including variants, there's something like 170 ships in the game, if I remember correctly.
