When I got my first cheap tablet in July 2022, new cheap phone in October 2022, I noticed that TikTok was pre- downloaded on the device s made in China. I immediately uninstalled it, it was still there, I had to tried a few more times to finally got rid of TikTok. I never have any desire to look at it, zero curiosity! I don't have FB, Tweeter while I was teaching in China from 2009-2013 because it was blocked there. After I return to CA, I still don't have the need to get on social media. Everyone asked for my WhatsApp number, I still told them I don't have it. The only apps for me is Instagram and KZbin for my own travel journey. The trick to not let social media dictate our life are Follow people, topics which are meaningful for you, the less the better. I follow a few close friends and mostly brands, companies for work inspiration. I don't need to know who eats or drink what. Turn off KZbin Auto play function, it will save your life when I click don't recommend, or not interested+ the dislike button, I don't see the algorithm recommends the topics anymore.

I get your point. But how else do you get a message out to others who are still only using tiktok, right? I personally think, if they're using social media to tell others, then they should make a few posts about it to hopefully go viral or reach some people, then ditch short-form or phone-based content as soon as possible afterward Gotta work from the inside outward to inform others, really - how else will they hear about it? Besides, it's good for this stuff to be trendy or even just a fad so that we get to a point eventually where we either have an underground subculture that's better off at minimum (which has happened), or more ideally EVERYONE jumps on it, at least for a while, and then they're all better off for the experience! Doesn't hurt at least, but it *can* really be helpful for many people. BTW, this 'trend' seems to have been going strong for the past 3 years or so (same with vinyls). So that's pretty cool!

Back before kpop was internationally known like it is today, there was a music video by BigBang and 2NE1 about the newest flip phone at that time that was called the "Lollipop." It was such a cute phone. I miss the days when people used to be excited about just having cute flip phones to call people on instead of smartphones to melt their brains on. :/

I remember when my smartphone broke one month after a breakup and I swear that the month I was using a dumb phone helped me heal faster from the breakup. It really focused to listen to my brain and be forced to feel the chaos I had inside. Soon after, I joined therapy. Of it wasn't for the month with a dumb phone, I'd probably keep online to distract myself or stalking my ex 😅

I’m a millennial, I got my first cell phone at 13 years old and it was a flip phone. Now as a 29 year old, I miss using them, I miss going back to that time. Where a cell phone was just meant to talk to people and very rarely text. Definitely no Internet access or anything like that. Seeing how smart phones are today were we now pretty much use them just for entertainment, texting, web searching and investments, I don’t blame people who want to use flip phones again. I might go back to it eventually.

I'm a Gen X. Never embraced social media nor do I Tweet. Not a Luddite, but always looked at the web as utilitarian. DIY videos, research, and general entertainment. Like right now watching this video on the front screen of my Razr 5g👍Life is about balance. When friends or family reach out it's mainly by phone. It's more enjoyable and less chance of misunderstanding a DM 🤔

Zoomer reporting in. Don't think I would ever do this. I'm not on social media, but I need my phone to rideshare, navigate, listen to music, use as an eReader, and Google pressing questions/topics that come up in my daily life. Most of those use cases could be replaced by separate devices, like a GPS, iPod, etc., but that would be inefficient and wasteful. You don't need to switch to a flip phone to practice digital minimalism. I know it's hard to just quit social media apps cold turkey, but there's many intermediate steps you can take before resorting to a flip phone so that you don't lose the actually beneficial aspects of owning a smartphone. For example, using black and white filters and setting timers can be helpful in reducing your social media consumption.

It's no different than people who get addicted to their computers or gaming consoles. You don't need a flip phone, you just need to re-learn self control. They have built-in features now to remind you to limit your screen time... use them, follow them. The biggest issue is social media... delete those apps and you'll probably feel less addicted and more productive.

I'm a Millennial. I grew up with TV, video games, and later the Internet. Regardless of how you feel about these things, making all of them fully available on a very portable device designed to be addictive which then also replaces functional items like your alarm clock, was a terrible idea. I have seen people that never cared for the Internet on a computer and never touched any kind of video game turn into smartphone addicts..while still thinking that they were barely on their phone. I recommend the jelly 2. It is a tiny smartphone. It keeps you off your phone because it's not as satisfying but if you needed to use an app you still can. You could swap back and forth between your regular phone if you use a sim card. The reason it's better than a flip phone for me is because i use music streaming, driving apps, use coupons at stores, gas price apps, etc. So there are good things about carrying a smart phone.

“Every single problem we have a night out, everything that leads us to crying is on our phones.” As a millennial… this is a very much so a surface overview/perspective. It’s truly about what and who you entertain in and throughout your life. Find some maturity, discipline and discernment to filter out what is of no substance and value in your life.. flip phones are still smart phones… your range is just limited… so after your weekly intermittent usage.. do you get back on your “regular” smart phone and cry all night?…how about you limit your usage of social media apps.. and research getting involved in your community and community advocation, animal rescue… or just Read a book… lol I can’t.
