Good video. Thanks. My hair has all the same characteristics as yours except I believe it is low porosity. My hair does not sink in water, and I can see beads of water that stay on the strands. I think that means I need less protein than you do. I stay away from it unless it starts feeling very soft. I don't use a leave-in currently, so I will try the lighter leave-in you suggested today. Maybe that will help! I will also try brush styling. I find it causes so much frizz for me, but maybe that is because I have not added enough moisture. I am struggling so hard! Thanks so all you do.

I forgot to mention, upside-down styling can tangle up coarse hair worse, especially if you have high-porosity hair because it sticks to the scalp and to itself. Upright styling is recommended for these hair types.

Back when I had no idea about haircare and the science behind it, I assumed that most of my crown hair was damaged (and probably was) and I cut it in a very short layer to hopefully grow new softer hair. Boy was I wrong lol, I discovered that my crown naturally grows this very thick hair texture and it was the first to go super dry and wiry feel, despite me paying attention to my diet and exercising a lot. Now I am careful to give that part of the hair a lot of creams and oils after washing and it does help

Thank you Thank you Thank you 😀 I have been suspecting that I’m low porosity AND coarse…this winter transition has been so tricky, because I think I need more moisturizing product but that feels soggy by day 2-3 and then I just feel Like I have to wash and start over again. I’m excited to check out your blog post for alternative product recommendations. And you’re 💯 right about some waves or curls bending in the wrong direction and the single strand knot…honestly I thought I was the only person or something had to be wrong w my technique…it was a little crazy making. Thanks again for being a wonderful resource.. For shampoo, I recommend you try As I Am Long and Lux Shampoo, Curly Chemistry* recommended it on her channel, it’s got a high concentration of a cationic surfactant that gives hair SO much slip, I can detangle my almost waist length hair, while shampooing upside down….sounds impossible I know, but that’s the magic of cosmetic chemistry. 🤓 *The video I’m referencing from Curly Chemistry was called something like Low Porosity Products - Cheers & Happy New Year

Hi Gena I have very course textured 2c/3a high porosity thick hair and have some white hairs around mostly the front - it's very prone to frizz and tangles. I can't over moisturise, but do have to be careful not to overload with protein. Oils, butters and custards are my friends, whereas anything too humectant heavy causes issues. Mousse and straight up gels don't really work for me, but custards with more moisture give enough hold normally. I have very dry hair and a dry/eczema prone scalp, so I rarely have to worry about weighing down my hair - it needs tamed tbh. I apply oil everyday to my dry hair or a balm for smoothness. My hair actually benefits from some silicone and it took a while to realise that the reason my hair wasn't behaving, was the obsession with silicone free styling products in the curly hair community. I do clarify regularly and use a deep conditioner every second wash. I have been wearing my hair curly for several years and there has been a lot of trial and error involved in understanding what works for my hair. Tangles are a major issues (especially in the nape of the neck) and I often have to trim them out. fortunately as I have so much hair losing a few isn't an issue. I sleep on a silk pillowcase and use a bonnet, but it gets tangled anyway. Clothing, the Scottish weather and the texture of my hair mean it's just unavoidable I'm afraid. I have mobility issues and can't do upside down styling anyway. I shampoo every seven to ten days and co wash once in between - that's what works for me. Best wishes.

HI, I'm a new subscriber from the UK. I'm 58 in 2 months time, I had curly hair as a young child but it just turned into slight waves, I have fine hair but a lot of it, 5 years ago I under went treatment for my spine that included injections, I noticed my hair was growing through curly, I had short hair then, and 2 years I had a gastric sleeve and lost quite a lot of hair due to the surgery but when it grew back after about a year it was like baby hair and curly but does go frizzy, I have long hair now and it is bleached, my hair is very curly from half way down my scalp, from my parting to my ears its wavy, I wish it would be curly all over like yours, I use shampoo and conditioner for dry hair and I use a cream after the shower that is for curly hair which I like and my hair dries nice, I air dry my hair, but the next morning its a big ball of frizz again, there are so many products on the market at different prices and I never know what to use...........sorry for the long comment xxxxxxxx

Thanks for the video Gena. I am a man with high porosity, thick hair, dry hair. I am seeing a ton of damage (e.g. split ends, kinks, frizz, breakage) and it seems to have gotten closer to the roots in recent months. Do you think I would have to cut off a lot and start over? I would rather avoid silicones, but it seems like products don't do anything, whether it's the natural stuff or not. Would a boar bristle brush be a good idea to distribute sebum from the scalp? I'm getting kind of disenchanted with long hair because of the challenges.

This could be due to my hair being high porosity due to permanent hair coloring (once every 3-4 months) but my hair's natural coarseness is not negatively effected by coconut oil! In fact, one of my favorite leave-in conditioners - the Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-in, is very rich and concentrated with coconut oil in it, and I've used many other products from brands that are coconut oil-rich with very little to no negative outcomes. I am aware, however, of the strengthening properties of coconut oil and so I do recommend using it in moderation, alternating your products and oils so your hair doesn't become so strengthened that you wind up with buildup, excess brittleness, or protein overload. balance is key.

@bina nocht I already knew all of this, thanks. coconut oil has been clinically proven to aid in strengthening the hair but you get your best benefits from protein and bonding treatments, both of which I use in my routine to maintain its health.

Before I had my kids my hair was coarse but wavy. During my 1st pregnancy my hair started to curl. During my 2nd it really curled up! Now I have 2b-3a curls..hormones and body changes really do affect your hair (and so many other things🙄)

So I have coarse and medium texture and low-medium density. I have 2C waves and 3B curls on the top and outer layers, with some 3A curls on the bottom layer. I definitely have the brittle spots and dryness at the crown. I notice that my hair is much drier on the 2nd and third day after I wash, so refreshing includes adding moisture. I don't think I have ever needed a protein treatment. I'm glad I read up on protein vs moisture in curly hair before buying Olaplex products. I had been thinking that my hair must need protein because I had never used it before and I color my roots each month, and it's HAIR, ya know. That's some money I can keep in my pocket, thankfully. I am still trying to figure out what product cocktail is best for me. One of these days...

Omg! I can 100% relate to this video! I have coarse, thick and alot of hair and have always been frustrated by the multitude of stray strands i see. I actually thought it could be the cuts I get because my stylist is not a curly specialist. Btw, i also swear by Briogeo deep conditioner you used in the video. Its a game changer. Is it okay to use a curl enhancing gel like Ag recoil or Uncle Funkys or does that fall in the stay away category?! Thank you for this video!! I will be watching it a few times to absorb it all. 💕💕

I never knew I had curls, I have always had frizzy hair and I thought I just had naturally straight frizzy hair but they started appearing in May (I got a small trim) and so on, right now they look like 3a-3b curls but the roots are straight and when further down its curly ish and wavy ish at the same time? Like there are some beautiful curls at the front that I absolutely love and some around the hair but I don't know what products are right for my hair. I was thinking of buying Shea Moisture products but because of the Christmas holidays money was needed for gifts instead, but anyway, it still is really frizzy and I don't know how to treat it. I use t-shirts to dry my hair and when I take it out I let it air dry because whenever I've tried defusing I've always gotten frizz and I just don't know how to help it anymore. I apologise for the long paragraph but thank you to anyone who takes some time off their day to read this. Please give me advice.

@@GenaMarie I relate. I was anemic due to extremely heavy periods caused by a uterine fibroid. In January 2021, my hemoglobin count dropped down to 4.5 after the heaviest period I have ever had. I ended up receiving four pints of blood. I can't tolerate iron supplements and since my levels were so low, I spent 2021 receiving iron infusions. In August, I had surgery to remove the uterine fibroid. My hemoglobin levels are now 16. Anemia is no joke and I feel for anyone dealing with it!

I brush my hair out before I shower since my hair tends to get rats nests bc I do make the mistake of wearing it up a lot (I do live in a high humid and heat environment) and I know brushing the curls out wet weakens hair and can cause breakage, but brushing out after showering and conditioning just separates the curls, and I end up with tiny stringy curls. My hair actually benefits from sticking together, therefore creating those big, natural curls that don't look crunchy or too corkscrew. I'm somewhere in the medium to coarse, bc not all of my curls are uniform, and it's very frustrating, bc I can't find a haircut that can accommodate that either. ANY ADVICE, LOVES?!

@GenaMarie

The Curlsmith Detox kit can help with those issues because it’s made to rebalance the scalp, both oily and dry. An ACV rinse will also help with an itchy scalp. A good clarifying wash then deep condition with a protein free deep conditioner will help
