I'm 61, and it's only in the last few months that i have finally decided to embrace my curly hair instead of fighting it. I am still trying to find the styling methods, products, and hair care routine that works best for me. Thank you for your content and suggestions.

My hair is low density and the curl method of using a brush to define the curl does not work for my hair. The curl is too tight and the roots ends up frizzy.
@BelaGangalАй бұрын
I have low-density, thin hair with a mix of 2B-2C-3A curl patterns. For most of my life (I’m post-menopause), I’ve relentlessly straightened my hair using hot tools and chemical treatments. About three months ago, I decided to stop straight styling and let my natural curls shine. It saddens me to realize how much I mistreated my hair all these years instead of embracing and nurturing my curls. To start my curly hair journey, I dived into countless KZbin channels, hopping from one creator to another. But I finally found my home on your channel. Why? Because your videos are packed with high-quality content, you’re direct and clear, and your humble nature makes them so enjoyable to watch. I absolutely love listening to your voice-it’s both calming and encouraging! Even though I started this journey quite late, I didn’t have to struggle much because I had the privilege of learning from you. Nearly every product you’ve recommended for thin, high-porosity hair has worked wonders for me. I’m incredibly grateful for your dedication and the value you bring to the curly hair community. I now feel confident and settled in my styling routine and always look forward to your new videos. Thank you so much, Gina. God bless you! That said, I do have one lingering issue: every morning when I remove my silk bonnet (and I’ve tried three different types, including the one you recommended), the curls on the top of my head are extremely flat. Reviving them feels like an uphill battle, especially when I have early morning Zoom calls. I’d love any tips you might have for tackling this issue!
@ixamxmalАй бұрын
I can relate to this comment sooo much. I chemically straightened my hair for about 13 years but haven’t the last 5-7 but clearly don’t know how to style. Meaning if I have low density or high priority or how to even tell. I know my hair is a lot thinner than it used to be so maybe not styling it soaking wet could be a game changer and maybe I am putting way too many moisturizing products. So I’m gonna try some of these tips because you’re so right, I have learned the most from her videos as well. She’s clear, straight to the point, but thorough enough for a newbie to understand and grasp.
@lots2learn373Ай бұрын
I also wear a sleep bonnet. It's difficult to lift the flattened hair at the crown unlessi wear a clip. I put a clip (sometimes called roller atop my head and guide the bonnet in place. It doesn't bother me while sleeping. If the curls need lifting in the morning, I spritz with water, position the clip back in, and it dries while i fix the coffee 😊. I don't have "flat top" anymore. Hope this helps.

Gena I really want to thank you for all the content you put out. You have changed my hair game. I have been washing my hair everyday for years, because whenever I would try to refresh it the next day with water, mousse or creams it wouldn’t work and my hair would look bad. You really made me realize that what I needed was to use a hard hold gel on wash day and then refresh it with a water mist and some gel again. And what really made the biggest difference for me was to damp style my hair with the gel instead of wet styling it. Thank you so much
@bethkailiuli2034Ай бұрын
Thank you for explaining your process. After trying to wear my hair curly for almost 2 years, I finally gave up and started straightening again. I have low density, high porosity hair. I'm going to try your techniques.

Thanks for sharing your curl knowledge. I've always had fine hair, but used to have lots of it. Since menopause, the thickness of my hair has decreased by half! Your tips for dealing with thin hair at the crown have been so helpful. So many curl channels feature thick, high density hair, and what works for them no longer works for me.
@bellzchellzАй бұрын
This was spot on for the don’t side ! I actually learned from you on how to simplify my routine and it has worked wonders! Many videos I see typically pile on the products such as heat protectant , curling cream , mousse , gel , and then oil. I now am to the point where I can tell when I need to couple mousse and gel together however I have opted for the more simplified approach and it has been a game changer ! Oh and also damp styling ! I use to style with soaking wet hair and now that I switched I have seen such huge improvement in my curl definition and volume. ❤ Gena you are a gem 💎

I’m almost 73, and I really didn’t realize my hair was actually curly until about a year ago. I’m still trying to figure out the best routine for my hair and your suggestions make so much sense to me! Especially about styling my hair damp instead of soaking wet, and not necessarily needing a leave in conditioner with a rinse out conditioner.

@saraandsheАй бұрын
@@daynakitlinski5909 My hair would definitely have more body and volume if I had curls like Gina. My hair type is 2A and will easily fall flat. The product combos I like are: 1.) Paul Mitchell "The Conditioner" as a leave-in, Paul Mitchell Flexible Style Sculpting Foam, and Kenra Dry Texture Spray at the roots; or 2.) Cake The Mane Manag'r 3-in-1 leave in conditioner, Cake The Curl Whip, and Kenra Dry Texture Spray at roots. Day one, my hair has great curl definition, but looks a little flat. Day two, my hair looks fabulous!!! Day three, it's time for a cute up-do, clip, or pony. Day four, I wash or put in bun depending on how oily the roots are and overall frizz.

There is soooo much you said that is helpful to me with my low density hair! It doesn't work for me to style upside down, to plop after styling, to style soaking wet - all of those tips I got from you and made such a difference in how my hair looks. I also section before applying gel rather than applying the gel by scrunching it in. I can't wait to try sectioning the crown and styling it back. I"ve been pulling it more forward and I'm changing that for certain. Thank you for all of the great information! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Your videos have really been spot on for me lately. I’ve noticed that my hair has been super soft lately and just not holding my waves/curls at all. I think I’ve been using too many moisturizing products. Plan to incorporate more protein. And I’m gonna try brush styling again. Thanks so much for all you do!
@mweireterАй бұрын
Another helpful video, thanks very much!! For me, it’s the all the discussion about MOISTURE that misled me about how to take care of my hair. For so many years I was just drowning my hair in super rich buttery creams, ending up with flat roots & frizz, and my hair was always breaving & leaving the ends looking so thin & weird. Thanks largely to your videos, I’ve discovered the benefits of protein, which my hair LOVES- almost every product I use now has a little bit of protein. Bond building products have been a game changer too! Now that I’m getting a more reasonable amount of moisture balanced with protein & bond builders, my hair is bouncier & looks fuller, & I see much less breakage. Yay!
@suziealthens1258Ай бұрын
Your direction is so clear. Thank you. I know now that I've been using waaay too much moisture on my curls. I stopped using ghost oil and that really helped. Then one day I eliminated the curl cream under the gel. Even better. Then in refresh day I lightly sprayed and added a tiny bit of gel. Wow! It looked better than wash day. So your hint to micro plop and add a bit of gel is going to be perfect, I'm sure. I just never thought of it. Can't wait to try it. Thank you!

For my fine, medium to low density hair, Prayer hands style application of gel on damp hair makes it stringy and frizzy. Micro-plopping is also my favorite technique I’ve learned from you. Happy holidays Gena!
@kimhager3900Ай бұрын
Thank you for saying this! Praying hands seems to make my curls stringier. I apply my products (leave in, mousse & gel) on dripping wet hair before getting out of the shower. I scrunch for a couple of minutes then micro plop. After removing the plop I use it to remove a little extra water/product. Then apply a very light coat of mousse (don’t ask me why it works on my hair, but it does. I feel like it is wasting a bit of product by doing it this way, but it gives my best results. Then diffuse gently until dry.

So glad to have "professional" confirmation that styling on soaking wet hair doesn't work for low density hair. My hair is both low density and low porosity so many of the routines and suggestions I see on line do not work for my hair. I am currently trying to find a gel that works better for me. I have been using Innersense I create hold gel. I like it but my hair often feels dry and certainly looks frizzy by day 2. I do add moisture but then it gets even flatter. Thanks for the great advice! Since my hair has gotten longer and I've been using a good shampoo, my wavs and curls came alive. I haven;t been doing a curly routine, and am looking to start one to make my curls look better.

I have been damp styling my hair mostly after watching your videos. I did experiment and try the soaking wet method I've seen a lot. I have thicker hair so it did work for the first day especially with curl definition. But the next day, a lot of my curl fell out and my volume was gone. I've always had more success with damp styling and microplopping. Thanks for all your tips! They are much appreciated!

As a fine, low density way, I have had good results with soaking wet styling which I do in the shower. I was pleasantly surprised with the Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer. I thought it might be too heavy but the hold is great.

Styling dripping wet hair doesn’t work for me! Thank you for your helpful tips!

I don’t have low density hair and my hair is wavy-curly, but I can not style upside down, soaking wet, or do a full plop. I see a lot of influencers styling upside down on dripping wet hair and have beautiful results. But not me lol. I end up with a tangly, wonky mess. Thanks for all the great tips, Gena. They’re not just for people with low density hair 😉.

Same ! I’m medium density with curlier hair, and the scrunching, plopping, styling upside down never worked for me. Just resulted in frizzy, tangled hair with undefined curls.

Hi Gena.. I am Amy-Marie and I love your videos. We have similar hair. So it’s so nice to hear your recommendations. I’m going to try micro plopping and then adding more gel. A great tip 😊 Happy New Year Gena-Marie. 😁

What I had to stop doing that is on other curly hair content is the use of curl creams. I now go straight to gel because the curl creams weight down my hair or lightens the gels hold in my hair. I have been watching your content since you were doing makeup tips for hooded or small shaped eyes. Love you and your content ❤
