Heyo, I'm trying to set up a campaign setting wherein a few hundred thousand years hace passed since your average D&D setting. This has two main effects: Firstly, different levels of technological and magical advancement is scattered across the humanoid cultures of the material plane, with steel golems powering armored bank transports, which have to deal with massive roaming beasts and rifle-wielding highwaymen, and maybe the vampire lord puts Kevlar on his ghouls. Secondly, however, many typically monstrous races have developed cultures and civilizations. The stone giants started carving enchanted strongholds to rebuild Ostoria, and other types of artistry than carving are starting to be recognized by their Ordning, hill giants started cooking and preserving things. As time ground on, even the most solitary of monsters have had to learn to work together or die; even chromatic dragons have been forced to make communal lairs to better protect from mortal thieves, Owlbears started making goblinoid-like tribes to counter over-hunting and dire bears now hunt in packs. As technology and magic have seen more use, the name of the game quickly became "Advance or be left behind" and nomadic orcish tribes formed mad-max-esque road trains, Bugbears put their long, powerful and skilled arms to use with deadly compound greatbows, and Kobolds make ever more ambitious war machines. I bring this up because I want you to make a video or videos on advanced monstrous cultures and societies: What instrument would a blue dragon invent? How would an orcish warband adapt to life on a magical airship? Would bugbears sing guttural, wailing tribal songs around a campfire? I think it would be an AMAZING talking point.

To your point about Genasi being a niche race: Honestly, those are my favorite videos vis-a-vis character creation. They give me ideas of how I can incorporate a race that is usually overlooked into my homebrew world in a way that doesn't feel like an afterthought or a reskinning of Elves (or they give me inspiration for chracters I had not thought to play before).

Here is how I would homebrew the Genasi: Air: Mingle with the Wind allows them to cast Gust at will. Starting at 3rd level they can cast Feather Fall once per Day. Starting at 5th level they can cast the Fly spell on themselves once per day. Increase their move speed by 10 feet. Earth: Merge with Stone allows them to cast Mold Earth at will. Starting at 3rd level they can cast Earth Tremor once per day. Starting at 5th level they can cast Meld into Stone once a day. Then give them a 20 foot burrow speed or a 10 foot tremor sense. Fire: Reach into the Blaze would gain the added benefit of letting them cast Fireball once a day after they reach level 5. Water: Call to the Wave would gain the added benefit of letting them cast Tidal Wave once per day after they reach level 5.

This may be super complicated but one reason I love the elements and also Avatar The Last Airbender was that all elements have a side of them that is "good" and another that is "bad" I mean that water isn't just cooling and healing drinks and fire isn't just a blazing Forest for. Water is also huge tidal waves and Whirlpools that sink ships and flood cities and fire keeps people warm and cooks food. Genasi should reflect this not just in flavor but in abilities as well Air gensi could be able to cast fly on themselves but maybe they can cast lightning bolt. Maybe water can create a Whirlpools or tidal wave. Their alignment and morality can reflect this. Evil water gensi are cold and uncaring about those they hurt. Good fire gensi can be passionate and ambitious. That is just my food for thought based of my favorite TV show of all time #NotAllFirebenders

Well, what do you want to know? My air genasi bard(Maleratio) was an ex-circus performer who's circus burned down when they were 17. They had to forge their own path in life alone until they met an inquisitive rogue who was running away from bad family circumstances, and helped them out (even though he was a bit of a dick to start off with). Mal's whole arc was finding how to be true to themselves, and what being a bard means to them. They have a pretty in-depth backstory, which made me feel really attached to them, as well as the DM had fun reading and implementing parts of it in the campaign. I also made the character a bit personal to me, and included to of my personality and ideals. Ironically, my current profile pic is Maleratio.

Agreed, RE: 5e Genasi needing some buffs and reworks. With Air Genasi, I wouldn't even be so restrictive. Just give them a fly speed, no caveats. The Aaracocra already exist, and they get a 50 ft fly speed. Letting Air Genasi have a 30 ft fly speed would be downright conservative. I don't consider races having a native fly speed to be that bad, so long as the DM understands what they're getting into. Either it's an all-flying campaign, or only one or two members of the party will be flying characters (in which case they are subject to all the disadvantages inherent to being caught on their own out in the open). [EDIT: I was going to say "Water Genasi not having swim speed is stupid", except, as another commentor pointed out, they DO have one. Elemental Evil Players Guide clearly states they have one.] Earth Genasi might benefit from perhaps getting an Unarmored Defense feature. Like, their earthen hide protects them, giving them an AC of 13 + either Dex or Con modifier, so long as they aren't wearing armor. Really lean into them being the tanks of the race. Closing thought: each of the Genasi should have one of the four non-damaging Cantrips introduced in Elemental Evil. You know the ones: Gust, Mold Earth, etc. The ones that might have some benefit in combat (like creating difficult terrain), but are more about utility and flavor. That supplement introduced these elemental Cantrips, but didn't give them to the race that could most use them.

Idk what it is about Genasi, but I thoroughly enjoy hearing build ideas centered around them. A lot of min/max stuff will go for offensive stats for spells and attack, but there's a lot of RP potential in all the Genasi. A half elf or half orc may be able to deny half of their genetics, but Genasi are in constant state of being aware of their multi planar heritage.... now I'm imagining a water Genasi pretending to drown to try and fit in.
@93techie
@93techie 4 жыл бұрын
Kyle Thomas I totally agree that where the Genasi may fall flat for your min/maxers they are a very rich conceptual space. Currently playing a grave cleric water Genasi, because what better grave is there than the sea? I will also note, they do actually have a swim speed. The one thing I would change about them is to give them darkvision. I tend to think anything that spends a good amount of time under water, especially deep water should have it.

@captainpandaman5097
@captainpandaman5097 4 жыл бұрын
I think Tritons was explained somewhere that they come from the plane of water and it's actually brightly lit in that water where they live. Genasi could be that they are pretty much land dwellers that are good in the water.
@kylethomas9130
@kylethomas9130 4 жыл бұрын
I would expect dark vision to be the norm for aquatic races. Carrying around a light source underwater can be a detrimental factor in certain areas. It'd be like turning on high beams on a car, only to see less due to fog, or heavy snow.

8:30 Air Genasi - give them a hover speed. They can choose to be 1' off the ground at all times, treating it functionally as if they were on a solid surface. They can glide over empty space deeper than 1' for up to half their movement speed , or equal to their movement speed if they dash, without losing elevation, and if they fall they can choose to impose a feather fall effect at any time while falling.

I think they just need to be more powerful. Each genasi can only channel one element, so your abilities in wind, earth, fire etc. should be considerably more effective or get way more uses. Then, choosing the right class for each one is wayyy more interesting : A rogue pirate water genasi A high altitude ranger air genasi Swamp or rock fighter genasi Fire weapon forging genasi. Their elemental powers are so weak they dont really contribute to the appeal of one as much as a dragon born or a sea elf whathaveyou.

A really interesting thing to explore with genasi is that relation with their elemental parents. Unfortunately the book decides to stop that before it can go anywhere by saying most genies don't care about their offspring. So toss that part out of the book. And suddenly you have a very interesting dynamic. Play an earth genasi at odds with his doa mother. Or a fire genasi whose disappointed and been disowned by his father and now has to cope with life without all his slaves and has to adjust.

Elemental chaos in the shape of a sphere, Positive at the North Pole, Negative at the bottom, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water spaced around the Equator, and all the combinations possible. I love the idea about the Fire Genasi Dungeon, and I may use it. Not even having a fire genasi player, but just having an interesting dungeon where everything is painted red for no obvious reason. All of the traps can also be themed in this way (Falls, ice magic, etc.) Once the players investigate the inner sanctum they might discover a prophecy that the mad mage* who built the dungeon (*or whatever the big bad is) was to meet their end due to the machinations of a fire genasi. In fact, that could be their undoing and when the players defeat them they might freeze in one of their own traps (or something.)

The simplest fix for air genasi I can think of is to give them a fly speed equal to 10 feet per point of their proficiency bonus. 20 feet until tier 2ish. 30 going into tier 3. 40+ once you to the levels that see less regular play. I got a lot of use out of Genasi in my campaign setting: there were places in the world where the boundaries between the planes was thin. People who lived in such regions would start seeing Genasi (or Teiflings/Aasimar) in their families after a couple of generations, depending on what plane was influencing that location. Since the elemental planes were much "closer" to the Material Plane, you were much more likely to meet a Genasi of some kind than any other 'planetouched'.

A player of mine took a shine to a genasi NPC in Dragon Heist (Embric, the smith, whole party kinda took a shine to him), and when he had to bring in a new character asked if he could be his brother. The elemental nature is super unique even among all the variety of DnD races. Been concepting a genasi monk myself for next time I get to play.

When I included Genasi in my world I took a very different approach, Genasi in my world are always people who are the result of a genies wish. So if someone makes a wish that would create people, what they create is Genasi... the biggest source of Genasi, is the genasi civilization on the moon. Someone made a wish for his own kingdom upon the moon.

I just wish they released some supplement with something like new race feats for races that few underpowered or could use just some extra oompf. for genasi I could see both a generic endurance based feat to go in line with the con buff and a more thematic feat, like getting extra spells based on your element, like drow high magic.

For Air Genasi, I'd just change levitate to a "hover" ability. They can literally hover an inch off the ground at will, but otherwise their movement in entirely unchanged. Let's them avoid pressure plates and ball bearings/small traps, and nothing much else. A really useful ability, but not at all OP. Being able to go up 20ft and then... stay there... is just lame. Maybe replace Earth's PWT with Catapult but only on pebbles, rocks, and stones. Sort of simulates an earth-based telekinesis, I don't know.
@paulelkin3531
@paulelkin3531 4 жыл бұрын
I think you need to reread how levitate works. First, you can target anyone (creatures without ranged attacks being extremely vulnerable), without allowing repeated saves to end the effect. Second, you move the target 20 feet up on your first turn, and can move it another 20 feet each turn after. Agree the genasi could use a small buff though.

If you're interested in seeing a non-D&D take on elemental creatures, my wife and I put out a trilogy of werewolf novels a few years ago. Search for The Ironborn Claim on Amazon, that's book one. It's fun to explore what the elemental core does both to individual characters and to the societies they create.

I added my Genasi as the first races of the Material world after the elemental planes bled to create the Material World. Theirs is the oldest, darkest, deepest dungeons with the most awe-inspiring of magic. Additionally, if you wish to play one, a default backstory will be something along the lines of "I was in some magical experiment and now here I am millennia later." (FYI My world leans into the implied low fantasy setting of RAW DnD)

I played a Water Gensai Storm Druid. Worked perfectly once my DM made the ruling that since I grew up in the depths of the sea I should be allowed Darkvision as the entire race should. Worked perfectly when flooding rooms with water spells and sitting inside friendly summoned Water Elementals for protection. Safely missed out on some battles by sleeping in safe underwater grottos while party slept in town.

I like the idea of coming up with a non-normal way for the planetouched to become that that ignores that race's normal place in the world. Three of my Aasimar are like this. One got possessed by an angelic being for a time, another was born through arcane meddling into divine magic that some might call necromancy, and the last one's dad actually succeeded in becoming a minor deity, retroactively making her celestial-blooded. That last one is also a Celestial Warlock, and you can guess who her patron is.

My game has both a Fire and an Air Genasi and they have both put their racial feats to great effect; The group Alchemist Artificer effectively created mustard gas to deal with a problem for a heist, so the Air Genasi held their breath, walked into the cloud of death and cast Levitate on the target wagon so it was light enough to pull out of the cloud of death, avoiding most of the planned combat. Later on the inn the group was sleeping in was set on fire as revenge for the earlier plot, the Fire Genasi used her fire resistance to repeatedly go back into the fire and help trapped people get out.

I'm quite fond of Genasi. I have a Fire Genasi Oath of the Ancients Paladin, named Sir Brand. He's the child of a human adventurer who was rescued from Efreeti slavery by the Emir's daughter, who fled with him back to the Material Plane; where the two fell in love, settled down, and had Brand (that's not his birth name). He became a Paladin because he wanted to prove all the people who thought he was a monster growing up wrong, and he chose the Oath of the Ancients because he found that nature soothes his ego and helps him let go of all the anger he's let build up in his heart all his life. I've yet to be able to play him, but that's less because of him, and more because I rarely get to play at all. I think they don't see much play because their rules are only in The Elemental Evil Player's Companion Guide and The Princes of the Apocalypse Campaign Book.

Lorewise, you could also take planar proximity into consideration. Maybe Earth Genasi deal the most with demons. Maybe Fire Genasi deal the most with devils. Maybe Air Genasi deal the most with angels. Maybe Water Genasi deal the most with... magic beasts or whatever's in those upper-right planes.

Just in time guys. I just created a Djinn merchant who sells potions called Manny. He has an air genasi daughter named Myridia who helps him out on the shop and might help out the party if they ever get there. Assuming I get a party together to play my campaign XD I also had a water genasi sorcerer called Burbuja (Spanish word for bubbles) who died to slimes at early level. He just wanted to save his npc childhood friend, but no. The party wanted to leave him behind. It either ended in a TPK, or the rouge got away. I forgot. My perception check failed. I had trouble seeing past the evil that was the players that day XD

I've figured that the Genasi should have an additional base feature, shared by all of them. I don't think the minor magics and single ability bump would come off as weak if the whole group of them had another beneficial feature. Even some things like additional skills and proficiencies would help. It doesn't have to be a power feature.
