What a phenominal song. I heard this back in 1993 for the first time and set out to find the 45. Surprisingly it took me almost 10 years to find this record. I do not understand how this record didn't hit #1.

"what now" was the first Gene Chandler record i was exposed to. my mom & dad had the 45. i was probably 7 or 8 years old when i first heard it in the 70's. still one of the finest songs i've ever heard!
@MusicDude8616 жыл бұрын
went to number 40 on the pop charts in 1965...I'm not sure about how well it did on the R&B charts, but I'll say it hit the top 10.

@bromancollins14 жыл бұрын
@cbjrcher I feel you on that. Even though I'm from the East Coast, that Chicago soul is a beast! The fact that Curtis Mayfield was a major architect of it made me like it the most. Much Respect!!!

I hear like songs like this and their appeal is that they always speak (or sing) to the deep pain love can bring. What now... what else can go wrong. Nothing like real R&B and soul to tell that story.

What a song. I have met a many beautiful girl in high school dancing to that song. That song was the bomb in the 60's and still is.

This is a great song, and Gene, like so many other artists from that period, never got the credit he/they deserve. We got cheated out of songs like this back then and were force-feed music they (producers and record company excecutives) wanted us to hear and buy. Too bad. But thanks to you guys for posting.

Motown had most of the top R.n B music back in the day BUT cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Memphis, had just as much great music coming out of those cities...

Chicago had the industry on lock definitely with Gene Chandler, Dee Clark, Betty Everett, Jerry Butler, The Impressions, The Dells, Billy Stewart, Fontella Bass, etc.

Gene is one of the best! Some girls preferred Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, they were great, but some girls preferred Gene, I'm one of them, he could always make me swoon. He needs to have a story done on him. He is truly unsung. Is he even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, if not, that is a tragedy! The people should be fired over there for not inducting Gene Chandler.

That's because you aren't interested in the history of this country. Where white artists covered songs recorded by black artists originally and end up with the recognition that the black artists were denied.
