Gene was one of the great singer/songwriters of his era - terribly underrated. Unfortunately most people don't like music that has substance. They fall for the marketing of the "plastic pop" singers and cannot recognized true art. Such a shame. This man should have been far more popular.

@@keithbate9405 Gene Clark spent his entire adult life working in the music industry and only 2 years of that was with the Byrds. If you read anything about his solo career, it's generally associated with the words "commercial disappointment". That and the fact that, despite being one of the finest American singer songwriters of all time, only a tiny fraction of the population could tell you who Gene Clark is, means you're wrong and he's massively under-recognized.

This is my second-favorite song from the Demos CD. Knowing that each of these is a swan song of sorts can make the album almost too painful to hear sometimes. It's like Gene had reached another plane at that point and we, poor mortals, can only knock at the gates of the places he goes. "Pledge to You" is what really caps it for me, timeless and forgiving and wise beyond measure. Gene lives!

I agree. The fact that he wasn't more recognized in life isn't really that surprising, but that today, more than 20 years after his death, he still hasn't been "rediscovered" (as it happened to Nick Drake or Gram Parsons, for example) is what really puzzles me. Maybe someone should put one of his songs in a car commercial or whatever.

Pamela Hay The original Byrds reformed and released an album about 1979. They played some gigs without David Crosby and Michael Clarke but used another drummer. The show was a killer and a little way in, everyone but Gene Clark walked off the stage. Everyone in the audience goes "Hey, whoa". McGuinn walks back and leans into the microphone and says "It's all right, Gene's just going to sing a few songs". Then Gene, with just an acoustic guitar and his incredible voice filled the whole hall of about 2 to 3 thousand people. There was one moment when his voice just ricocheted around the room filling every space, it was so beautiful that it sent a shiver up my spine, and probably everyone's spine because you could not hear anything but his emotionally-charged voice that was powerful and fragile all at the same time. And then it was over and the others came back and finished what was an amazing electric set. But I will always remember that moment Gene gave us, and still gives us on his records. His sound is deep and affecting, sad and yet uplifting, and very beautiful.

Yes, McGuinn, Clark, Hillman got back together around March ‘78, but didn’t bill themselves as The Byrd’s at all ( though Press sometimes called them that). Crosby wasn’t a part of that excrptbs couple gigs he sat in on. By June ‘78 MCH was touring NZ and Australia with Poco’s Drummer George Grantham ( also singing harmonies). They had not yet recorded the album released in 1979 as MCH. I saw them play 1800 seat Perth Concert Hall ( fifth row back), and yes, Gene sang Silver Raven to an awed and rapt audience. A beautiful rendition. I totally get that you experienced a spine tingling moment. Gene was a powerfully emotive singer and commanded your ears when on his mark. And in the earlier MCH days he was “ there”. I feel privileged to have heard him sing live. And I agree; Gene’s songs and his delivery of them are deeply affecting, sad, uplifting and beautiful! ❤️

Pamela Hay You have all the details down, Pamela, except in Melbourne (I don't know about other places) they were billed as The Byrds both times I saw them and that includes the club known as Bombay Rock which was a little like seeing them at Ciro's in LA. I still have the flyers and years later McGuinn signed one for me when he was on a solo tour here.
@tomvincent71674 жыл бұрын
This is doggone fantastic!!! Gene can not only sing but his guitar playing is better than McGuinn's, has a lot more soul in both. The demo songs focus on the man and his guitar, no studio effects to cloud the music.
@rogermurray85533 жыл бұрын
McGuinn was a technician. Soul was not part of his palette. The Byrds were wounded after Gene left and very close to their last breath with Crosby''s departure, both men the true soul of The Byrds and both pretty much hated one another.
