I can't stop thinking the final part when he splits the paper in half multiple times had to very difficult; you need to put just the right pressure and speed at the right places with each foot or the paper will slide instead of ripping, or rip incorrectly. The paper could be rigged, pre-cut and mended to split just right but not likely with the multiple sub-splits and other action before. I imagine how many times Gene did the entire routine perfectly, just for the freakin paper not doing the right thing at the last split, you couldn't just "fix it in post" like today

I totally agree this is a great & favorite number... but the difficulty was in finding the right workable newspapers & enough of them to work out the bit. these papers tore just right, crumpled just right, et al. and they weren't a recent date, so the prop man had to scrounge all over the city for enough of them for rehearsal, shoot & reshoots. but it's a great number. Watch it on super slo-mo and still can't count the taps!
@marcon68062 жыл бұрын
This is by far (in my opinion) Geny Kelly's best dance ever crafted. The coreagraphy is amazing and so original. It was one of the most difficult dances Gene had to shoot, yet he does it so effortsly. You could really see the love and passion he had for his work.

@@priyac7054 Of course, Priya. Both Donald and the Nicholas brothers were superb! It just seems to me that as technicians, artists and improvisers Fred and Gene were perhaps the two most influential dancers of all time-and both were decent actors and singers to boot!

‘For its time?’. What can you mean? The tap dancers from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s will never be equalled AND there were a lot of them. In my opinion, Gene Kelly was the best of all and an amazing choreographer too.
@Realmasterorder4 жыл бұрын
@@Bethi4WFH I mean at the time and for a few more decades these things were very creative and far ahead of their time,now we can see all sorts of crazy stuff and athletic ability in dance moves that would totally seem unreal back then,something classy and good remains so but to be fair there we should always see it in elation with the timeline its in.
@mjsilverfox4 жыл бұрын
You just contradicted yourself, you said it's "amazing for it's time" then went on to say it's "timeless"... I agree that it was amazing for it's time however definitely not timeless. I look at this and I'm wondering where the energy, the spark, the use of hand motion which is lacking. Michael took everything they lacked and worked it like magic! Now that's what you call timeless as it's unlikely there will ever be another performaer and dancer on the same level as MJ, yet I've seen youtubers that can out dance these guys now. Michael was outdancing these guys when he was 17 years old, check out his variety performances from Las vegas. Absolutely incredible!

Found out something about this man I never knew before. He also had the talent for serious drama. See him duel Spencer Tracy with razor sharp dialog in the film "Inherit the Wind". Gene Kelly stood his ground there too. I hope there is more like that, always thought he was good for a light romantic lead but nothing more. At times it is a nice surprise to find out you've been wrong.

Always hold Astaire as the tops, favorite over any others. But in this number, Gene rivals Fred's genius. Gene said he worked on the logistics of this number more than any other he ever did, and it paid off big. I also adore the ending. After the build up to the rapid tap work, the spins, the paper shredding, ....the expected route would be to pullout all the stops and go for an incredibly big finish of some sort. But he stops, distracted in reading the paper, and quietly ambles off. It's a gorgeous look, and gives you a chance to mix the excitement of the meat of the number with the look of sheer class at the end. Brilliant.
