Every drummer playing today owes something to Gene Krupa. This is a superb album

Ventura’s articulation and control of the bass saxophone on Stardust is remarkable.

Tony DiNicola invited Charlie Ventura to Trenton State College to teach some classes and play at the local pub. He had a deep voice when conversing with him. He sounded wonderful as a player and the small trio played beautifully. Tony was a great inspiration to his students. He will never be forgotten. Not only an excellent drummer but a wonderful human being. Those days were special. Thanks for the memories. Dennis

Dennis Nardone, Interesting that you mention Tony DiNicola on this posted EP. I made Tony a tape of this album while I took lessons from him. He mentioned Charlie Ventura as well! I love this EP mostly because of that memory of Tony and of course his praise for Gene's playing on this. Rock on man!

People who say Gene Krupa didn't have nuance are full of shit. The dude could play soft if he wanted to, but swing was his main deal, and MAN could he swing.

I haven't heard this since it knocked me out as a teen-aged drummer, very much influenced by Gene Krupa. Perdido is decidedly bebop-ish! Amazing also, is that they didn't feel it mandatory to have a bassist, and neither did the Benny Goodman trios and quartets. NO-body does that nowadays!

Gene Krupa was the best drummer. Charlie Ventura reminds me of Lester Young. Stardust played on the rare bass sax.
