I was fortunate enough to sit in several times with Gene Ludwig in Pittsburgh when I was 24 years old. First time, he called Green Dolphin Street in Eb, at a million mile per hour tempo, just to hear if I could hang! I couldn’t, but went back the next week, and you can be sure I knew that tune in 12 keys, upside-down and backwards! Thank you, Gene, for schooling this guitarist, and inspiring me to be better.

E flat was the original key that most people played it in until the real book put it in C for some reason. Miles played it in E flat.

I'm sitting here listening to this with Randy Gelispie. (Yes he's still swingin' his behind off.) Randy says that while the recording was made at the 118 Club, the photograph is actually from the Key Club in Newark, NJ, in roughly the same year. Thought I would share. Enjoy.

Brilliant. I think the same 1 person keeps "disliking" all the Pat Martino videos. He's actually looking for Pantera, but has difficulty spelling. No disrespect to Pantera intended.

this is swingin' heavy stuff, man! we are extremely fortunate that recordings of those live performances exist for posterity. even though this music exists in the moment, it is a shame to lose it to "the space", ya know? Pat is the real deal AND Gene and Randy are cookin' up a storm!

Neither can I _ _ _ I've always been in love w/ the organ trio "element" of jazz , and have regarded Martino as a major icon , but had no knowledge of Gene Ludwig prior to hearing this . But the man was a dedicated , professional with chops all over the place . A giant void now exists where Gene and Pat once held a place . RIP gentlemen .

Martino is one of my favs, and in agreement with a comment below, I do have a preference for his playing from this period (pre brain surgery). There is was a ton of space and balance in his playing, something I think his later efforts could have benefited from - but I’m not taking anything away from his ongoing status as one of the 2 or 3 greatest post-bop guitarists. I do however have to comment on a with comparison to Burrell. PM is ,and was back then, a monster, a tremendous force to be reckoned with. If someone came on the scene today playing like he was back then, they would scare the crap out of the vast majority of guitarists playing today. A KB however wouldn’t be noticed today. No disrespect meant to the man, he’s a fine guitarist (I would give a lot to be able to play as well as he does) but he’s simply not in the same league as the likes of Martino, Montgomery, or for that matter Johnny Smith, Hank Garland or Kessel. The playing and artistry of these giants would - were it to be reborn now in someone new to the scene, would still command attention. Burrell’s playing would not. And in a way, this is what makes the giants in jazz (or any music for that matter) what they are. The likes of Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Still, Tubby Hayes, Bird, Navarro, Tyner, Powell, Peterson, etc. etc. would all still stand out in bold relief from the crowd today. To my ears KB is not in that category.

fuck that , go back listening to more than midnight blue. You should be ashamed to make such general assessment ... please make yourself a favor et give him more than 5mns ... KB is a FORCE. He largely contributed to set the standards of how the guitar is played today, as did Barney, Wes, Jimmy Raney, Tal... and remains one of the most original voices out there on the guitar. moreover he is obviously a fantastic improviser, I'm sad to hear such things on Kenny. he is a GIANT . AND I love martino :) AND I love benson (who are in my opinion the guys who kept the bop guitar thing going in the 60's) but they OBVIOUSLY love Kenny !!! it is so ridiculous . KB DOES still stand out in bold relief from the crowd today, just open your ears

What a namedropping jerkoff session that was. And none of them were playing like Tal and Wes in the fifties. So what! If it sounds good it is good. Dug this recording.

@@jamesp.mcquoid1639 There's a difference between sounding good and being a giant. But I agree with Tal Farlow in the 50s. It's actually infuriating how underrated he is despite being one of the greatest

This is pre-anuerysm. You can tell the distinct difference in his playing. Here, Pat sounds more like Kenny Burrell, Wes or Grant Green and is very major-melodic. Post-surgery, his playing became unmistakable and his harmonic development became unmatched. A great player in either "era..." This trio smoked.

Interesting point. There is surely more space in his playing from this period, and in many ways I prefer it. But I have to disagree with comparison to Burrell. @@BeadsByAria I don't know about your ears, but I think Kenny bursting on the scene now with a tune like "Blues Fuse" or "Kenny's Theme" would make a little splash, don't you think? Christ man, he was as identifiable as anyone you listed and much more sophisticated chord wise than Pat, who was always more focused on single note playing. Pat could never rock the blues like Kenny and Barney. You don't consider Kenny a "Giant Of Jazz". LOL! OK!

@markamarkemarki well there was no video it was only audio but it was incredible Pat was more articulate and smoking than I had ever head him and I have been listening to him since the late 1960's; at one time in early 70's I thought I had everything he ever recorded as leader & sideman, about 30 LP's, when I heard the Gene Ludwig clips realized I was apparently mistaken; SRVMOE took them all down!!

This definitely has more spacing, and is more patient. I love both though, but this is great, I feel like on this particular standard, playing 200 notes a second may not sound good. But this is Pat Martino we're talking about, he would find a way to make it sound good.
