That era was great for the really wonderful singers in this genre as well as others like Motown, Country and Western - always a wide variety of really talented singers and musicians no matter what you were listening to. Today? If you like a lot of low quality music with profanity all over the place and few real stars - that's what we have now. Sad!

In August of 1967 I saw this artist in concert in my hometown of Va. Beach, Va. at the VA. Beach Dome. That was a small venue where they had 2,000 chairs all lined from side to side starting not far from the stage going to the back of the Dome. Giant fans were at the back of the Dome to blow the hot air around as there was no A/C. It was hot in there but nobody cared. What a performer! A hand pulled the curtain to one side at the left side of the stage and Pitney came out in a black suit, white shirt and a black tie. He had a 10 piece band in back of him. Hundreds rushed the stage with their flash cameras. He sounded exactly like his records. Now those were the days when concerts were worth going to. It was worth every minute!

@@nickjohns It's a good story but also a bad story, because it's about something that a reckless guy did against his wife or partner. Eg, he was not too far away from getting back home to her and he'd seen another woman on the way who he wanted to run off with. And if he's like that (that reckless & unreliable) then he will do it again and again, regardless of who gets hurt and leaving a trail of misery in his wake. I have herd this song many years ago and always wondered whether Gene was maybe singing a true story about himself and something he might've done - or maybe he made it all up just as as lyrics for a song. I have no idea. I only ever herd 2 things about this guy - 1, he was a famous singer, and the other............. well.

An absolutely wonderful talent. Gene Pitney does this song like no one else. His facial expressions and hand gestures just add to my enjoyment of this song. Hats off to you Mr. Pitney. Truly one of the greats.

I've read the BIO, and am a Rockville native, know his "haunts", and feel to have traveled down the same path many years ago after GP....what an honor it is to be after the same trail as he was...only I cannot sing as wonderfully as he did...GOD rest his soul.

Pitney was definitely one of the most dramatic vocalists in the rock n roll era; this song is great example of his talent. Also love the backup harmonies, both vocal and instrumental, which become more and more intricate as the song progresses. Lastly, "Tulsa's" surprising closing is one of the best in that era. Altogether a superbly produced song. What else could it be, written as it was by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

@@Bowkow I love Tulsa, it's small City, but everything is very close (Walmart, malls, my work place, house, school etc), there's so many job opportunities, gas is super cheap 1.79 rn, apartments are cheap, people are super awesome, I'm brown and City is full of white people and Trump supporters but I never ever had any issue, everyone we're super nice to me even Trump supporters, I like Tulsa. I got better job offer from Nashville but I don't want to leave Tulsa. Edit: strippers are great in Tulsa, so many hot Latinas over here.

Yes, artistically choice. It's one of those narrative ballads, not quite in the Newgate someone-dies tradition, that relates a universal enough heart tragic circumstance, and so meets audience need for the occasional red pill of truth to sad archetypal experience.

One of the greatest male singers of my youth. Had a cassette, then a CD of his greatest hits in my office in West Los Angeles, often played it when I was prepping for a big argument or court appearance. Gave me such energy, with his passion, emotional intuition, timing, all of that.
