Gene Tunney - Was an American professional boxer who competed from 1915 to 1928. He held the world heavyweight title from 1926 to 1928, and the American light heavyweight title twice between 1922 and 1923. A highly technical boxer, Tunney had a five-fight rivalry with Harry Greb in which he won three, drew once, and lost once. He also knocked out Georges Carpentier and defeated Jack Dempsey twice; first in 1926 and again in 1927. Tunney's successful title defense against Dempsey remains one of the most famous bouts in boxing history and is known as The Long Count Fight. He retired undefeated as a heavyweight after his victory over Tom Heeney in 1928, after which Tunney was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine.

Definitely less remembered by fans, even fairly hardcore fans. Dempsey excited everyone for the sport with his style of destroying people. Tunney... he wasn't as popular because he was educated, smart, technical, and a determined 12 round fighter. That's a 180 to Dempsey's style. So... when Dempsey lost, like... people were probably pondering if they'd see the great Dempsey back in the ring doing his thing. They wanted to see that again. They didn't like Tunney's style as much, so.... he just wasn't as loved. Tunney though, overall, incredibly impressive career. One of the greats as far as I'm concerned with. He has a more impressive resume' than many that followed him in my opinion.

HanZAgod, man, seems like you have video's on most of boxing's greatest fighters. Have you done a video on Harry Greb yet?? Man had serious skills and a serious record. Went 45-0 in ONE YEAR! The last year he fought and same year he died he fought 10 times in 8 months. Man was a machine. Modern fighters are impressive if they have 45 fights in their career. Greb's skills and accomplishments shouldn't be overlooked. Greb fought Tunney something like 5 times! Also the story of his death at 32 is tragic and peculiar. Story goes, he went to hospital for nose surgery and died of a heart attack. Keep up the good work. I think you're one of if not the best boxing historians on youtube. Very thorough, highly knowledgeable, and well-rounded content that is well produced and fun to watch. You distill each fighter's essence with amazing adroitness and capture it flawlessly in every vid. You deserve 10 times the subscribers you currently have and hope you get there.

Ali too. Their fighting styles are similar too.. the left right combo. Ali could predict the combination he would use to knock a fighter out in his early prime. When Ali was to Alex Miteff, he stated to an interviewer that "2 fast left jabs, and a straight right, and if he's still standing after that and the ref ain't holding him up, I'm gonna run." Alex was knocked out with that very combo, 2 lightening fast lefts, and a straight right. These men were so experienced they could predict how they would fight an opponent just by looking at them. Why else do u think Ali was so confident against Liston. Prime Ali was no joke.

Not ahead of his time at all. When I was a kid people were saying that Ali revolutionised boxing because he was the first man to ever box with his hands down. I loved Ali and used to parrot that line myself for years until I learned more. Tunney is one of many examples that give lie to that statement as we can see. There are so many others that we can now see and many others not on film. For example Corbett, Joe Gans, Young Griffo ( look up what Gans had to say about Griffo) Jack Johnson, Jimmy Wilde, (Watch him against Joe Symonds), Peerless Jim Driscoll. Just saw one of Midget Wolgast that's well worth a look. There were so many of them. And all of them would look 100 times better if they had been filmed in HD, with modern sound effects. Also, if someone ever found one of those old cameras from back in the day and filmed today's fighters with it they wouldn't look at all as good as they do today.

@@jimvolk9911 Tunney's analysis of his opponents' characteristics operated tactically in the ring as well as strategically. During the Long Count you can see him thinking 'What next?' He decides to keep Dempsey away for a while- one of Gene's skills- regains full strength and never lets himself be cornered by another killer punch. Knowing Dempsey is unlikely to be floored by one such from himself, Tunney ups the attritional outboxing mode, frustrating the Mauler and piling up points. Once off the canvas his superior fitness and dictation of the fight's outcome are visible till the final bell. In much of this Gene followed Corbett. He also anticipated Ali. Their biggest weapons were their heads, but they were also dancers and floaters. Ali added psychological aggression, taunting his foes; Gene merely provoked them beforehand with his 'gentleman and scholar' image.

During Tunney's term as a district attorney in Sonoma county he tried to prosecute me for knocking out a drug dealers bodyguard who attacked me in a bar in Rohnert Park California for no apparent reason. After the case was dismissed and they realized they had made a mistake Tunney never apologized to me for putting me through a year of hell trying to prosecute me for defending myself against a man who was more than twice my size and was clearly trying to kill me. I will always remember Tunney as a true creep. I guess it is to late for Tunney to apologize to me since he is now dead.

@@colincampbell7928 I was looking on his fighting record and I didn't see those other fights. Man talk about underrated boxers both of them Gene Tunney had 88 fights under his belt and only one loss and Greb had an unofficial 299 fights!!!!! No one today can come close to saying they are the greatest. These men where made of Iron!!!! I laugh when Jake Paul says he's the greatest, even Tyson Fury when they think he's the greatest.

@@crimsonconquestcustoms2584 I'm reading a huge book on Greb, basically a summary of ALL his fights. Yeah man ppl don't know the history. This unofficial fight thing is bullshit. It basically meant the press at the fight were the judges. Greb went 45-0 in 1919. Beat several HOF fighters that year. Henry Armstrong had featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles simultaneously, was robbed in a middleweight fight. So he'd have had 4 titles in the days of one title in each of 8 divisions. Joe Louis defended the heavyweight title 25 x! Even Holyfield did loads, had a trilogy with Bowe, had the Moorer fights, the Tyson fights, the Lewis fights. Regained a version or unified titles a record 4x. Being the 1st cruiserweight to win the heavyweight title. Evander did loads Lennox did loads. Fury had the Klitschko win, the Wilder trilogy and a few bouts. But he has an 0 record. He retired healthy, rich and happy. The golden age of boxing was decades ago. It fizzed down by the 00's. Now it's more sports entertainment. Like Bernard Hopkins did at middleweight, Fury ruled a weak division. Like Bernard Hopkins, he was good. Nothing like the old days. They were TBE not Màyweather.

If you talk to the espn generation, a lot of podcasters here, this is the boxing dark ages. But Tunney was not unique during this time. Just like today, there were brawlers, boxers, free swingers, wrestlers, maulers, good fighters, great fighters, and just bad fighters. Boxing is boxing and if you ignore the twenties, you ignore the greatest fighters in history. Tunney was a master and would have LITTLE TROUBLE with what's out there now. All due respect and just as an example, does anyone here REALLY believe Bernard Hopkins goes very far with him?

Tunney vs Dempsey were some incredible fights showcasing the best of two very different types of styles. I think Beterbiev vs Bivol would be epic in a very similar way. Those are the best fights that can happen. i.e. When you get Ali vs Frazier, we had some of the best fights in boxing, because style wise, you weren't sure who would actually win. Like... it could go either way, and often does. Foreman vs Frazier though... way less cool fight. Why? Well, Frazier's style just sucks against Foreman's, hence he got pummeled. Style wise, lining up a Beterbiev vs Bivol fight would be epic like the Tunney vs Dempsey fights.
