KillaBlu I don’t think people forgot about Charles based upon him beating a more liked champion, he just wasn’t very impressive compared to the others of his time period such as Marciano who is also pretty much forgotten in the modern day. The fact dempsey decidedly won his title by decimating Willard and held it for 7 years is why he’s remembered, Tunney was Champion for 2.

@@it_me_1412 Tunney retired undefeated and dempsey at one point went three years without defending. Dempseys stalking brawling style appealed to people more than tunneys more defensive style and Tunney was very articulate and soft spoken. Gene Tunney 82-1. Gene took technical boxing to the next level. Gene would interview boxers that fought upcoming his opponents in the past and he would take notes. He would watch videos of his upcoming opponents and he would take notes. Gene was knocked down once in his career and yet he wasn't ever knocked out in all of his fights. He won his final fight, retired, vacated the belt cause he said he had nothing left to prove and he didn't want to deal with long-term damage. Other fighters that fought and never stopped, Sam Langford, Harry Greb, etc, all got damaged and lost vision/went completely blind. Gene Tunney served as chief trainer in WW2. He was a veteran of WW1 and was the champion boxer in the armed forces boxing. Gene was smart with his money and avoided the troubles from the Great Depression stock market crash. He died at 81 years old. Absolute badass.

To Cloud Dweller: "I see little or no defensive skills" Dempsey and Tunney have defensive skills similar to Fazier and Ali, respectively. Dempsey/Frazier bob and weave, occasionally use their hands and arms to block punches. Tunney/Ali, both fast on their feet, slide in to deliver shots, smother their opponents counter, lean back to avoid counters, then slide out and dance about the ring.

Go 2 days without eating, you'll understand." So he got the rich life and wanted to enjoy it. However, Gene was just an overall better fighter. He took technical fighting to the next level. He interviewed guys that fought Dempsey so he could take notes. He watched videos of Dempsey fights and took notes. There's a reason why he ended his career at 82-1. His only loss was to Greb cause Greb had a completely random style of boxing that wasn't ever repeated either. "He was like fighting an Octopus with many arms" -Tunney. He defeated Greb 3 times after that and drew once.

If only Jack had gone to the corner straight away when the referee had told him. He might have regained the world title or at least made it a harder fight for Tunney. To be honest Tunney was dazed but not really out. He started getting up straight away and looking around even though he was struggling. I think he would have made the count even without those extra seconds but he would have been a bit shaken and would have eventually regained momentum. Tunney was a very intelligent and crafty man who still had enough of his senses to take advantage of the extra seconds of the count.

The Long Count though was spot on. The rules were that Dempsey go to his corner and yet he was up to old habits and hovered over Gene. The ref did the right thing by refusing to count. I love Jack Dempsey, but I am glad that the rule of going to your corner after a knockdown was implemented due to him. Dempsey was relentless when a fighter fell down and he wouldn't let them get back up. Jack probably would have won that one and his title back had he gone to his corner, I will agree there.

@@Deadsea_1993 , the problem with your argument is the ref did not apply the rule to Tunney when he knocked Dempsey down later in the fight! The ref started the count immediately before Tunney moved to a neutral corner! Also, the ref should have picked up the count from the time keeper when Dempsey moved. Not that it mattered in this fight, standing over the fighter was perfectly legal and common before the new rule went into effect. The rule wasn’t changed because of Dempsey’s tactics. Check out the Wikipedia article, link below. Evidently the Dempsey camp asked that the new rule be used in this fight. Lol en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Count_Fight

If it had been Tunney taking a 3 year layoff, Dempsey would've easily knocked him out. Dempsey crippled himself with that 3 year layoff, yet Tunney almost got beat by Dempsey the second time around. @@joep8787 Both fights Tunney had no problem keeping Dempsey off of him. The woulda shoulda coulda doesn't mean squat. Two chances and two losses how do you judge it any other way. Tunney was an exceptional boxer. He had great footwork and was actually a bit before his time with sliding and the use of angles in counter punching. As far as his chin goes he was pretty much known for having a good one. As far as the long count goes....Boxing has rules. The days of standing over a guy and hitting him before he barely got to his feet were over. Dempsey thrived in that era.... which was over. Tunney also knocked Dempsey down with his right. Not his best punch. He mangled his face with his jab..... also not his best punch. He had a terrific left hook which was the punch that knocked quite a few fighters out.
