1958 I was a freshman in high school we loved Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, they were the best. We used to go to the record shop every Friday to but a "45" record. I still have a collection of them.

I always thought Gene had the definitive fifties voice. It really shows up on "Unchained Melody", one of my lifelong favourites. I wish he'd had more good material. I went to see him at the Marquee in Soho in 1971,and found a small notice on the door saying he was ill and the show was cancelled. So I went 200 miles back home, Gene died without ever doing another show.

Love Gene Vincent!! When I was a kid I had an album of his greatest hits. On the back cover there was a small black and white photo of him with John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I think the shot is fr m about '61-62. John and Paul were still in their black leather greaser stage. I always thought of this shot as kind of a passing of the torch. Thanks to Gene and the Blue Vaps and the Fab Four for all the great music!!!!

Gene must have been incredibly shy. He looks up at the ceiling the entire performance and can't get off the stage quickly enough once it's over (20:05).

Yes, he suffered from stage fright so he looked at the ceiling. As for the exiting the stage quickly, I've seen some back stage footage of him in some performances. That was mainly so he could sit down and get off of his leg for a few minutes. His left leg was completely shattered in a motorcycle accident not long after he returned form serving in Korea. The doctors wanted to amputate it but he refused, so he had it in a brace and suffered a lot of pain due to the injury for the rest of his life. I think that was part of the reason for the drinking problem he had as well. (which eventually cause him to develop the stomach ulcer that killed him). While many people took drugs in the sixties for pain, many people used alcohol to help deaden chronic pain in earlier years. Anyway, if you see some better quality film of performances (like one particular in France that was filmed in 1965 I think it was), you can clearly see part of the leg brace jutting out the bottom of his pant leg. That's also why you see him taking that wide stance on stage where he juts his left leg back at an angle so as to not have his full weight coming down directly on top of it.
