Gene Hoglan drum play through of Strapping Young Lad track Skeksis. From Gene's brand new DVD The Atomic Clock : The Clock Strikes Two.
"Devin and I wrote the tune in late summer, early fall of '04, at this shabby downtown Vancouver rehearsal space that kinda represented where we were both at mentally in our lives.
I remember him mentioning that he'd love to have an 'Almighty PunchDrunk' (one of my all-time favorite bands whom I've also drummed for) feel and vibe to whatever was about to come out of us. To me, that meant to include, 'the PunchDrunk beat', which is this great, samba-esque, Latin-feel beat (that I am sure has a name-I'd love to know it) which PD proudly stole from the legendary Canadian band The Smalls. I'm sure you've all heard it a time or two.
Dev and I played around the beat the whole song, getting closest to it in the chorus, then rrreally sinking into it in the last minute or so, in the part I refer to as the 'girl fight' part, because that's what It sounds like Dev is saying there. It is such a fun beat to play, and a real satisfying denouement to the song. A moment of crowning glory to a ruling tune.
The version on the new DVD is a completely re-envisioned mix, where the vocals and samples are absent, really bringing out the rhythm guitars and basic tracks. "
The Wait is Over!
GENE HOGLAN's "The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two" DVD to be Released February 3, 2017
Featuring Interviews with Members of ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT and More!
GENE HOGLAN's highly-anticipated second DVD, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two, is due to be released Feb. 3, 2017 and will feature the Clock himself breaking down some of his favorite beats, telling stories and playing along with tracks from several of his most legendary projects, including Strapping Young Lad, Testament and Death.
Filmed in high definition on a dozen cameras, with studio-mastered audio, this DVD offers a chance to see GENE HOGLAN play like never before. Though certainly inspirational for any level of musician, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two is not only for drummers. Gene's easygoing, approachable attitude is readily apparent as he happily tells the viewer stories from his career, chatting as if with old friends about days in the studio or on the road.
An impressive roster of high-caliber musicians also weigh in over the course of the feature, offering stories about Gene and their experiences working with him. Interviews include Scott Ian and Frank Bello of Anthrax, 3 Inches of Blood/Revocation's Ash Pearson, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick, and Eric Peterson of Testament, and more.
Featured Tracks:
Testament: "Rise Up," "Native Blood"
Galaktikon: "On My Way"
Meldrum: "Walking Point," "A Toast To Romance"
Strapping Young Lad: "Skeksis"
Death: "Overactive Imagination," and "The Philosopher"
This DVD provides a glimpse into the philosophies, techniques, and history of one of metal's most influential musicians of all time.
The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two was recorded At The Warehouse Studios Vancouver, Canada. The DVD was edited by Leon Melas and directed by Rob Shallcross and Leon Melas, with co-direction from GENE HOGLAN. All audio was produced, engineered and mixed by Rob Shallcross with audio mastering from Greg Reely.

Yeah, it's always sad to see musicians who look at their instrument for an excuse as to why they can't play a certain thing, like: "My pedals are shit, thats why i am not fast enough. I need this 900 Dollar Trick-Pedal" or "my fretboard isn't slim enough, that's why I can't play this - with a better guitar i would totally be able to play this". Sure, there is a limiting factor in the grade of your instrument. But you can always even out a crappy instrument/crappy hardware with good technique. That's why a good musician can make a 100 Dollar guitar sound awesome and a good drummer can show you his speedy double-bass fill on a 50 Dollar pedal.
@sgtouring
@sgtouring 7 жыл бұрын
You completely hit the nail on the head, dude! Exactly what I was talking about. It's always the gear's fault on why they can't play something. I've been hearing these excuses since 6th grade, as I'm sure we all have. Haha. Everyone is always worried about upgrades instead of getting better.
@herrsebastiankoenig
@herrsebastiankoenig 7 жыл бұрын
I mean, if you really hit a wall and can't progress because your crappy pedal would not allow you to go beyond a certain point - go ahead and buy yourself a new, better pedal. But at least try to go as far as possible with the gear you have. Most of the time you struggle it's not the gear - it's you. To be aware of this can save you a ton of money.

Ah, good times, I remember getting Alien in a store on the first day of sale in the early morning when they haven't even unpacked the boxes properly. :) Imperial Skeksis Shitstorm combo just slayed my ears. Gene blew us all away with the info on how he prepared to play Shitstorm live: by playing the entire set with weights on his calfs and when Shitstorm came towards the end of the set, his drum tech stripped the weights off of him and the legs just flew at that 230 bpm madness! I ended arranging Shitstorm for my mandolin orchestra and when Dev came to Ljubljana years later with DTP, I met him and gave him the score and had him sign one for me.

I have watched a few of his drumming videos, and only just now came to this realization: Left-handed and left-footed. In the shots in the pedal cam, during triplets his main foot is his left, and he plays the high hat, ride, and the majority of his cymbals with his left hand.

TheCund The Devy Hoglan dynamic was special. Gene's new material he has worked on has come across as a bit flat in many ways. Tried listening to new Testament and found it to be rather generic.

gringochucha ehh. The last Testament album I really loved in its entirety was The Formation Of Damnation. Didn't think anything after that was bad by any means. Just wasn't super interested in it. I also love the Legacy to The Ritual era testament to death. Guess I can only take so much thrash.

I bet it's harder (Meshuggah), but that "band"/guy has a unique style of creating nearly perfect representations of an idea, or a perfect "form", which even if it's not the most technical stuff ever (partly due to being a very clear form), still stands out for its creativity or the "power" of certain sections (while being close to purely technical stuff).
@Surmoka

@@bfkc111 most of Gene's stuff is harder than most of Meshuggah. Look at 1995's Symbolic, Gene's playing blows everything away.
