Genelec 8350A Vs Adam A7x - Studio Monitors Comparison

This video is a comparison between these two cuples of studio monitors.
The microphone is a Behringer ECM800, an ultra-linear measurement condenser microphone, settled in the mix position.
The GLM is a system by Genelec to calibrate and control their Genelec monitors, delivering fully optimised performance for their acoustic environment.

I own both, Genelecs will give you a far more realistic (true to source) soundscape than the Adams. When you use the GLM kit, it makes the Genelec sound even more realistic. Genelecs are used in broadcast studios, music studios because their sonic qualities translate everywhere - airpods, car audio etc. Adams are by no means bad, there are just quite mid-rangey -meaning the sonics are much more emphasized on sources like vocals. For genres like Rock Music - this can be helpful when mixing aggressive rock vocals but you will find that you may end up needing another pair of monitors to provide you with a more 'full' spectrum of sound. Adding a sub to the Genelec, takes it even one step further. I find it hard to use other monitors (asides PSI, Quested, Augs) for tracking and mixing. Hope this helps.

Appreciate your detailed response so thought I may ask a follow-up.... The 8350's are 8" while the A7x/v are 7". What would you say the comparison would be between the A7V and a more comparable 8040?

Poor comparison. The Gens are 8" woofers with 350 watts of power. The Adams are 7" with 145 watts of power. Too entirely size categories.

Totally different engineering categories: one pays attention to cabinet design, internal reflections, diffraction, port design, and and room correction, and the other does not.

The outer diameter doesn't necessarily tell you the actual vibrating surface area or its displacement. If wattage is the electrical energy put into the speaker, then isn't it decibels (sound pressure) and Herz (frequency) that you primarily hear? Phase relationship, impulse response and more also come into play. There are so many other physical criteria affecting sound. The biggest relevant difference for me is the price, which is exactly what I was researching.

Thanks for your question. When you hear music you have to create an equilateral triangle with your listening position. That’s why they are close, I have not enough space to put them farer, and I also don’t mind, because I use different monitors basically to compare different eq responses for my mixes.

Styrant, what to say? There is such a huge difference. Genelec have a wider spectrum and the GLM is an incredible help to correct the defects of your room. No comparison

En serio? monitores de gama media alta con la salida de una consola behringer x32? debes estar bromeando... creo que esa consola te capa los monitores, ándate por un buen dac para que veas diferencias, lo digo porque ya he probado la salida de esa consola y es de juguete.

En principio la descripción del vídeo está en inglés y podría no hablar español... pero afortunadamente lo hablo. Gracias por tu comentario pero no estoy de acuerdo contigo. Los Genelec están conectados a la salida AES/ebu, eso es decir que la conversión D/A la hacen los monitores y no la mesa. A parte eso, que sin embargo es fundamental, es cierto que habrá mesas mejores, pero tampoco estamos hablando de un producto asqueroso. Hay demasiada gente que está convencida que lo que cuenta es la marca, luego escuchas sus mezclas y suenan como el culo. Yo creo que los oídos y la acústica del cuarto son mucho más importantes que la marca del mixer.

@@MusicalBoxStudio emm, pues que te digo, primero que todo lo que dices es netamente sugestivo, ya que estas comparando la señal de un par de monitores con entrada análoga (adam) vs unos que están tomando una señal digital (genelecs) podría decir que he reparado aproximadamente unas 40 consolas de behringer (todas las versiones de x32) y con detalle te puedo contar que son incluso inferiores en audio a una 01V96 de yamaha; tanto de forma digital como análoga, si estas tomando las entradas de la consola como me imagino haces te puedo contar que los convertidores análogos digitales de esta consola son un tanto mal optimizados y que aunque digan que los previos son de midas realmente es mas propaganda que lo que hay en diseño electrónico, los oídos y la acústica del cuarto si son supremamente importantes, pero en la cadena de reproducción y de grabación el eslabón mas débil definirá la misma. de hecho es sugestivo hasta el posicionamiento del micrófono; siendo una comparación deberías tener un par de micrófonos u otro ECM8000 en configuración XY para darle mas realismo al punto de escucha.

I don’t want that this becomes a spanish conversation because it’s not respectful for the people that don’t speak your language. I had before (for 4 years) a Yamaha 01v96i and honestly I sold it because didn’t like it. The X32 is much more smart. It would have sense, as you say, to record stereo with a binaural system (but it’s very expensive) or with a OSS technique. Your idea of recording with a couple of ECM8000 with a X-Y technique, is absurd because those microphones are omnidirectional whereas for the X-Y you need cardioid microphones. I believe that you misunderstood my intent for this video, I only wanted to offer a first comparison of those monitors, it’s not a “definitive monitor comparison”. I don’t like unnecessary controversy. You’ll know what you say, I don’t go in the substance, even if your tone seems a quiet conceited

They're both studio monitors, within my financial reach but not necessarily my budget. This is like comparing expensive apples with even more expensive apples.

You know, I'm quite tired about this kind of comment. Depends the sound only from the price? And if so, why can't you compare two products only to undestand the real difference of quality and undestand what is the right choice for you? I work every day in the studio with those 2 monitors couple and the difference is NOT so huge. Yes, Genelec are better for sure but I could also do very good mixes with Adam. The comparison is done not to say what is better but to listen to the differences.

What about those who chose the genelec over the Adams , then to discover the genelec are almost twice the price ? If the genelec were better and cheaper that would make sense , or if the Adams bring. Heaped were better , that too would be good , but to show the genelec to be better when they are twice price , it Durand help anyone trying to buy a pair of monitors on there personal budget . I have the money for either, but I need to decide whether it's worth stretching the budget that far as there are other things in my life which also deserve my money.
