My first set of monitors were a set of Mackie 824 clones made by Behringer. In 2007 I made the jump to a pair of Adam A7, and use them to this day. I struggled and struggled to get the low-end right, until one day I was mixing a live show, and wondered why it was so easy to dial in the low end in a live environment, but so evasive in the studio. That’s when I realized that I “listen” to the low end with my body as much or more so than with my ears. So, I found the first sub I could find that reached down to 20hz accurately - which turned out to be a Bag-End D18E. I use their ELF crossover, and with tuning from Sonarworks, I am able to hear 20hz to 20kz +\- .5 db in the listening position with a sub $5k setup. 😎

I Have the Genelec 8361a monitors with a Genelec sub in a very small room with minimal treatment. They're calibrated with the Genelec GLM room correction kit. Sounds phenomenal and accurate. I had the Adam A8H when they were first released. But they had an issue with randomly shutting off & powering back on. I liked them a lot but I couldn't deal with them shutting off in the middle of critical studio sessions. So I sent them back and got the Genelecs instead. Im glad I did. The Genelec's are my end game monitors

After almost 30 years of doing this my humble opinion is most 8 inch studio monitors are 6 1⁄2 inch woofers at best, famously the 8 inch Genelec was barley 6 3⁄4 inches. So Monitor size matters depending on how loud you listen to them. But an 8 inch monitor in a small room at low volume will always be better than a 5 inch monitor which will be more like a 3 1⁄2 to 4 inch woofer. My current SAM 1032C are said to be 10 inch woofers they measure in at just shy of 7 inches, Yamaha HS8s are 6 1⁄4 Woofers, so in retrospect an 8 inch studio monitor is not as big as it seems. So I always tell people to get the the 8 inch model if they can since that will be the one the manufacture designed and the smaller models are more of an after thought reusing the same tweeter and parts ect. But if you do use a 8 inch in a smaller room keep the level as low as you can, even in well treated rooms its best to keep your level low so the physics of the speaker don't cause issues. But if you choose something smaller you will need more referencing to guard against judgment calls made on smaller speakers, and if you can have at least 2 studio monitors sets and a hi-fi set just for referencing not mixing. The hi-fi set can be bookshelf speakers like Edifier or Bowers & Wilkins whatever the popular hi-fi speakers are. When I started in the 90s the Pioneer floor speakers were our hi-fi reference point but I now use B&W 600 series speakers to reference and one of those weird little bluetooth boom boxes with the gamer RGB lights because those seem to be a popular with young people! This is just my experience so its not perfect but based on almost 30 years of doing this. Good Video by the way!!! Cheers!

Thanks this is useful. I'm in a 9x12 room but tend to listen a bit from further away. I'm looking at the Adam A8H and was wondering if it might be too large but I don't think so. I think it will work for a variety of applications which sometimes is just listening for pleasure and not mixing.

@@joesalyersThanks for the feedback. I do very synth and design heavy music. Occasionally I do some chilled out lofi stuff with bass and guitar but House music is my main. I always need to consider that when figuring out what monitor to select. Montors and microphones are truly the hardest things to pick without being able to A/B them properly.

Such an important topic that needs more attention on KZbin. I would love to hear someone talk about the psychological belief that a bigger speaker is better , But the truth might be that the reason most people go for a larger monitor is to do with the fact they lack experience when it comes to understanding frequencies and how to listen to them. I'm saying this because i went thru it and know realise that the lacking piece was not a bigger speaker but knowledge... This was my experience

Great video with lots of useful information. That being said, another reason a monitor may be called midfield vs nearfield is because of the higher SPL capability of the speaker making it ideal for listening at a further distance.

Thanks for good info! I actually upgraded from my really small iLoud Micro to Genelec 8330’s this week. I’ve been doing a ton of calibration with the included GLM kit and even with this tool it's definitely not easy to get it right. I have a very small room with no treatment so I’m struggling with a huge dip around 90hz at my listeningposition. I’ve come to the conclusion that I need a deeper desk so that I get a bit further from the speaker just like you mention.

I've read good things about the 8330's and mine should arrive tomorrow to demo - I'm trying to scale down from much larger speakers to see if I prefer something small at close range. The GLM tool won't fill in dips much - DSP can't really make up for those properly. You could try moving them around a bit to see if you can escape the mode causing that dip.

Great video! Im currently looking at replacing my A8X for a set of A7V. I have a small room 2,5m x 2,5m (with treatment) and I heavily depend on Sonarworks. This video more or less confirmed smaller is better in my case. But perhaps I should also take into account a smaller set with sub? I do harddance edm music, so working on low frequencies is key.

I am an audiophile. When listening to music, the majority of production are simply not good enough, when listening to a high-end audio system. One get irritated. For example, Celin Dion’s albums are not at a quality level that one would expect for singer at that level. Therefore, have I learned, from being interested in this topic, that for best quality mixing, the monitors, need to be of the highest quality. If you can’t hear the details, you can’t produce the best quality sound. For example, the SEAS DIY kit, SEAS KingRO4Y Mk II, is among the ULTRA HIGH-END monitors or the MUM 8 monitor. Expensive but affordable. Go for the best and make the best sound.

one big point I miss in your video is, bigger 2-way speakers will always have midrange (around crossover frequency) sonically scooped (pun intended), making them rather bad for any voice/vocal work/listening, in such case you're right smaller speakers will almost always be better choice, that said, actually smaller speakers would have to be more expensive than bigger speakers, to provide adeqate sound quality (low distortion, low end etc...) for heavier use like film scoring or music work, Kali Audio have quick FAQ video on topic why smaller IN-5 needs more power than bigger IN-8 model, admitting some design compromises to keep costs reasonable :)

I have the Adam A7X's , and they are awesome! i have to move around a lot and they are just right for that, not to big and heavy. Pretty sure they go down to 42hz, sometimes I use a sub for critical low end down to 28hz is what that does. And the sub gives guest listeners more boom for the room..

A lot of great concepts covered. Subwoofer integration should be covered. My oldies but goodies = One setup I've played with are KRK 6000B/Rokbottom sub which need to be carefully integrated = placement/crossover point /amplifier. (the small driver becomes a mid in a near field setup). Another are KRK13000B (3way mid field) which blow me away in regards to dynamics, realism, Hz range. This one is very particular towards amplifier selection. I love 3 ways. Lots of great new & old stuff out there these days. Had old AR9's (4 way full range floor standing) again very particular with amplifier integration = fantastic mids resolution & thunderous bass. Lately its been headphones as I don't have a home to play in.

I was just pondering this exact question as I have a pair of Dynaudio BM6 MkII, and looking at doubling the size of my current room from 3x4m to 3x8m for more comfortable tracking. Was looking at the sub route rather than bigger speakers unless you think that unwise?

I tend to believe there is value packed in this video and kudos for the effort making it but not to spoil the video, sorry scoop, if there is anything more or less here saying that the bigger the speaker the better for any kind of room. Why? The bigger the speaker the lower the it can produce natural sounding sub. That beats all. Real sound, Truth.

@@SonicScoop They're incredible monitors with super high end drivers etc. The company sell direct also, cutting out distribution and retail and have adjusted their prices accordingly. The nearfields I'm getting are costing $4k for the pair but they easily compete with those costing between $8k and 12k a pair.

Yes, size matters, I went through this in my current space. I couldn’t use my Dynaudio BM15As, too overwhelming, I couldn’t use my JBL 305s, too tiny and underwhelming, landed on Adam T7V, perfect size for the space, it just sounded right.

I am RIGHT at the point of professional room treatment and choosing monitors. It’s overwhelming. I wish you had further clarified what is exactly considered a “small” room or a “large” room. That can vary greatly, of course. My room is 13’W X 18’ deep with a 7’ 8” ceiling. I have 8” monitors in there now; BUT, I think I’m sitting too closely bcoz I can’t hear any low-end from them until I move way back from them! 😫 I went to Sweetwater to hear the ADAM A7V, but they didn’t have any. 😢

That's a placement issue. Its a problem with the room, not the speakers. Take the speakers and put them where you sit when listening. Play some music and walk around the room. Put the speakers where the bass sounds best. Then just fine tune them with adjustments like toe in. As for room treatment, most room tuning devices are made out of some form of fiberglass. If you want to save some money, you can go to a place like Home Depot and buy fiberglass panels. The rectangle ones that are about the same size as the average picture. For appearance, you can wrap them in cloth. Making those will get you about 75%-80% of ones that are professionally made. For the money, you just can't go wrong.

This was very useful! Thank you! My use case is a little different in that I'm a guitarist running a Fractal FM9 through an Apollo Twin X into a pair of Genelec 8020 4" monitors at home. The 4" Genelecs sound amazing but I've been toying with moving up to something like a 7" or 8" pair of monitors just to try to move a little more air and feel it more in my little 10x12 studio. I don't need louder, I just want to fill the room a little fuller. Any suggestions from a pro audio specialist like you would be appreciated. I don't think a powered 10-12" cab is the answer since at that point I can use my 20 watt Two-Rock 12" combo when even with my OX box is too much. Thanks! ~Robert

i have adam f7 with sub7 subwoofer (with the 80hz switch on to cut lower frequencies under 80hz for the speakers) i want to reduce the footprint of my speakers on my desk (near field , less than 2" feet away), if i replace my 7" a 5" monitors from the same serie (f5) will i reduce sound quality or improve it as frequencies under 80hz are cut off anyway and smaller woofer size(5" from f5) is faster/lighter than a larger woofer (7" from f7) ? thanks

I have the JBL MkII 6.5in with the sub. I do only acoustic music (no drums), and wonder what would be better, if there is much a thing as speakers that work better for particular genres. I don’t need super low subs since the deepest thing I’d be mixing would be an upright bass. I’m thinking that something that had better transient response and mid range detail would be best? Would I be correct in thinking that? Is having only one sub a silly idea? Thanks, Justin!

Thanks. What is considerd a small room and large room? My bedroom is approx 12ft by 15ft and 9ft high. I have a pair of Prodipe TDC 6 coaxials on Zaor stands. I'm looking at Kali In-5s but can get the In-8s 2nd Wave for same price. Too big?

As discussed in a bit of detail in the video, making sure the speaker isn't too big for the room is a lot more about listening distance from the speakers than it is about the square footage of the space. Additionally, it's about how well-tuned your room is-what the lowest frequencies you can reproduce with reasonable accuracy at your listening position are. (Theoretically, this latter consideration, of low end performance and room treatment, is separate from room size. A small room can technically reproduce surprisingly low frequencies. But in practice, most small rooms are pretty poor at doing so accurately, so there's some pretty strong correlation there! :-) So, ask yourself these two following questions: 1. How far away will you be sitting from your speakers? 2. What are the lowest frequencies you can reproduce with reasonable accuracy at and around your listening position? Check out around 8:02 for the discussion and "rule of thumb" equations there. Hope that helps! -Justin

I'm in a small acoustically treated room with Yamaha HS8's. Technically I'm sitting too close I suppose, at around 2 feet, but I have a habit of rolling back on my chair every once in a while to hear the the lowest frequencies. There's a significant difference in what you hear going one or two feet further back.

For the past 10+ years I have Yamaha HS80 and HS10W. And I am about 5-6 ft away from them. The clarity isn't that high, but if it sounds right in my room than it will be generally good. I am convinced that a sub is a good idea no matter how big the speakers are... you roll off the lows of the monitors anyway if you add a sub. I have a second set of ikmultimedia iloud micro monitors which are surprisingly good sounding. Although I consider upgrading to Neumann HK120mk2 + HK750. Which would be a considerable investment.

It’s super valuable to have an A/B setup. Even a 2nd pair that’s more of a consumer-grade speaker can be suuper helpful, because you’ll hear how other people will actually listen to your work on that type of speaker. It can really show you when there are subs killing your mix’s ability to translate on consumer gear, which is important. I love my Yamaha 7s with sub. 👌 I use a pair of older 00s ADAMs as my B speakers (nice to hear how the ribbon tweeters represent the high end).

I remember the JBL 4350 in studio 'Swan' in Belgium...it could reproduce the dynamics in real power of real instruments....like the cords on a grand concert piano ...or a fender bass at concert levels ...in old times the adagio was 'the less the cone moves,the less distortion

If you are mixing music you ALWAYS want to go with the monitors that give you the widest frequency range. Room size doesn't matter one iota. That means usually an 8" monitor, sometimes 7" monitors and at the high-end you'll find a 6" monitor or two that go down under 40Hz. You can't mix what you can't hear. Five inch speakers don't reproduce deep bass in a small room any more than they do in a gymnasium. You NEED to acoustically treat your room and get monitors that go low enough in the frequency range so you can hear what's going on in order to accurately mix. As far as small monitors with a sub woofer, adding a sub, which requires another crossover, just gives one more opportunity for response errors due to the crossover. That, and the fact that bass frequencies around the crossover point now arrive and combine from three physical locations instead of only two.

Great video. I went for the Neumann KH 80s a few years ago and do not regret the choice at all. The amount of articulation in the bass from the 4inch driver is insane. I am usually in a small/squareish room so ten to keep the listening 'triangle' very small. Listening position is around 2ft in order to stay out if the centre of the room. Also these monitors are designed to be placed very close to the front wall. They actually sound bad when they are further away.

Great VT I have a man cave outside with is a concrete and hardwood lined and sound wool as a sandwich. The room is tiled with 1" thick 12 x12 tiles walls and ceiling. The door is steel but old and drafty. I have a pair of Presonus ERIS 8" and I'm in the centre about 2.5" away sat down. My room size is 10' x 8' ~ my issue is after all this treatment and build materials , I'm still getting sound bleed and o track low volumes not even enough to get true bass sound, the steel door also has treatment tiles. Can anyone help me please, I live on a private estate where musical instruments are not allowed, its a matter of time before someone complains. Help please, know your stuff

That is probably the single biggest component from a performance perspective, where a smaller monitor could have an edge (all else being equal). There are other potential reasons discussed here as well that are valid, but people will quibble about the others a bit more :-) -Justin

@@SonicScoop I agree, thats what makes Genelec coaxials really good in my opinion. I use 8260A even though theyre fairly large 60lbs speakers, their minimum distance is 0.7meters. Fairly sure the newer "the ones" can be used even closer. Can definitely see more companies going that route with the average studio getting smaller requiring shorter distances

There is no quality differences in the build or technical ability of Adam audio speakers. They all perform the same. The more expensive models have higher spec and more flexible connections and other pro features like eq room adjustment, but the drivers, ribbons and crossovers are identical.

I'm trying to understand how "They all perform the same" and "The more expensive models have higher spec " are not contradictory statements. Those two ideas seem mutually exclusive. It also doesn't seem plausible that they all have the same crossover points, as in most cases, you don't even have identical speaker sizes and driver configurations across their 3 lines. Their cabinets have visibly different designs, geometries and porting systems. I very much doubt that the T series use the same exact large drivers as the S series, but I can ask and find out if you like! Plus, DSP makes a big significant difference in modern speaker performance, and I imagine the T series is DSP-free. Have you heard an ADAM S2V 7" ($1399 per speaker) in the same room as the 7" T7V ($199 per speaker) and come to the determination that they sound the same yourself? Or are you just assuming this would be the case? Any clarity you can offer is welcome. Very best, Justin

ADAM is a fairly different company from when Klaus was at the helm. I don't think there is any chance the T series and S series are using all the same drivers. There have also been additional improvement to the S series since then. The current S3H and the original S3a are not the same speaker. There are a lot of objective improvements in the new S series. While a lot of the technology in the original S series may have migrated to the original A series, albeit at a smaller scale, those two lines have both changed since then, and new less expensive lines have been added. While the T series sound great for their extremely low price, there is no question that the A series are an upgrade. They cost substantially more for a reason. @@SonicScoop yes, the interview i saw was a long time before the T series. So it was just the S and V ranges he was talking about and comparing. He said the main substantial difference was the pro grade features connectivity and room compensation

Just an FYI - I’m an acoustic consultant for my 9-5 and have classically trained to masters level. I have a dep understanding of loudspeaker and transducer design. The A77H monitors work just fine as near field type monitors. The whole big vs small speaker depending on your room is false and a misconception to those who don’t have experience as an acoustics engineer.

It depends how you define "nearfield". There certainly is an ideal minimum listening distance for the A77H, just as with any other multi-driver speaker design. That ideal minimum listening distance will tend to be smaller on a smaller speaker. Hope that helps clarify some of it! -Justin

@@SonicScoop to blow people’s mind, in acoustics there isn’t actually technically a ‘mid field’. When considering sound fields of a source, we have ‘near field’ and ‘far field’. Midfield is more so a marketing term to effectively describe a product which also serves a grey area between these two. Generally all loudspeakers are technically near field systems. Unless you’re rigging a sound reinforcement system at an outdoor festival. Midfield is effectively a marketing term to describe loudspeakers which have a larger ‘sweet spot’ and can serve a larger space. But notwithstanding the above, this RARELY means a midfield system can’t serve a ‘near field’ setup. Yes there is some salt to topic of how big a room should be and how big your speakers should be, but this is rarely a truthful discussion amongst self proclaimed audiophiles. Through my knowledge and expertise in acoustics, this informed me to choose the A77H monitors myself. In fact, any loudspeaker that has more drivers which serve more frequencies, better, are technically superior. Providing you setup with a proper acoustic apex, you will rarely have an issue with any speaker system. So stemming from the above, I always tell people the whole speaker size thing is a load of nonsense. In extreme cases yes, but comparing an A7V monitor to the A77H is moot and pointless based on the above argument. In fact the A77H doesn’t even have 7” drivers. They are actually less than 6”. Food for thought for anyone reading this I suppose!! You don’t often get free knowledge from acousticians with years of experience, educated to masters etc… on this site or any other!

If you take out the “just” part I’d agree with you :-) There is indeed an ad for Adam, embedded in sever conversation about speaker selection and design, the principles of which can be applied to any brand’s speakers. But I like their speakers, and they footed the bill, so I demonstrate the ideas with their speakers instead of some other brand’s. I hope that makes sense! -Justin
