I know this video is 7 years old, but is a scrupulous person required to confess past sins? I'm pretty much tormented by my scrupulosity daily, constantly thinking about past confessions and whether or not they were valid (including a general confession I made coming back to the faith), as well as unconfessed sins from the past. Ultimately, I feel like my scrupulosity is suffocating, and pretty much every week I am thinking about my past sins, both confessed and unconfessed. I convince myself that every unconfessed sin was mortal, and that by not confessing it I will be judged for it, even if that is not necessarily the case. I don't know when to let go and trust in Jesus' mercy, and when to bring past sins to confession--it's a constant battle. When I say "Jesus, I'm trusting in You", I feel like I'm doing something wrong by not confessing. Any help would be truly appreciated!

Thank you for this important question. We would recommend that you find a trustworthy spiritual director and then follow his instruction in this matter. Quite possibly he will insist that you not make general confessions. God bless you.
