Yeah, after he kept them for 5 years longer than the will decreed that they should have been freed. And after he beat them, and rubbed salt in their wounds. What a slime bag. It's time his "lost cause" reputation got replaced by the truth. The weird thing is that a lot of Lee's reputation comes from letters like this, where his self-devised marble man persona is well on show. He had his act down so perfectly, even he believed it. But the blood of American soldiers, and the curse of slavery belie that mask.

Yes we all know Just like the Pharisees that negro slaves were blackened chickens and never did anything wrong and we're so wise and sagacious blah blah blah left his clap trap puke! I do not believe for one moment that Lee abused anyone Bond or free. Had these people and their ancestors not made war upon one another and kidnapped one another and put them into slavery and sold them as merchandise this event would never have happened.
