Hi Sean another good topic👍. Most of the nursery growers here in US use cocopeat and slow release fertilizer on almost all houseplants even succulents🤔 so they dont have to keep watering the plants.(Base on plants I purchased) And they are always on plastic pots, and they do fairly well on warmer months but detrimental on plants during winters. So I find using different soil mix on different species of plants save my collections. (Just common plants🤗)
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 жыл бұрын
Yeap the nurseries there seems to grow everything in a massive scale and efficiency is their top priority. Most plants can adapt to the potting mix in which they were propagated into. But they can do even better when given potting mix that resemble closely their natural habitat.

@onlyplants
@onlyplants Жыл бұрын
I have never measured ratios before… usually go by feeling 😅 fertilizers are important for herbs, they are quite heavy feeders. Chemicals are harmless for us but it may not contain all the micro nutrients. Compost or animal waste fertilizer remains the best ones for nutrients.

Appreciate your educational video on potting mixes. May I know what is old soil which is sold in my local nursery? Your jungle floor mix includes dried bamboo leaves, I can't find it, what other leaves can I use? Thanks in advance.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, the idea of dried bamboo leaves is to aerate the soil and create a light airy texture. Perlite is a good alternative. Some people even use 50% peat and 50% perlite with great success. 😀

@onlyplants

I’ve never measured my mixes, I use my feeling and its different each time. Also you can use perlite amount based on how often you want to water the plant. I use lots of perlite because I water them daily, and it also rains almost daily here. Mature ferns can get very thirsty too

Pothos have a lot of roots, general may be better. Unless you plan to grow one vine up a pole or wall to encourage massive leaves, in that case I recommend the aroid potting mix so they can develop strong gripping roots.

@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 жыл бұрын
Its a process called guttation and its normal for plants do shed excess water. And yes often times its a sign of overwatering but often times its normal as well. The only way to know if you have overwatered is if you stick a moisture meter in the soil before watering 😌
