these rockets used to be god tier. i used the f-89D to unlock the ENTIRE US air tree up to T6. this thing was so busted if you used its speed and didnt fall for baits or traps it was nigh unkillable except for facing the french jets at the time, highest game i ever got with prem and a 50% booster was 42k RP in one airRB.

Iirc IRL this thing had no proxy fuse, so it baffles me why gaijin set it to 20m distance to detonate. You'd think if they wanted the armament to be any use for balance reasons then it'd be something more like 5-10m. Instead now we're stuck with a capable airframe and bad weapons at 7.0. I do think the F89B should go back up to 7.7 though. Great guns + afterburners and respectable speed for 7.0. I know you bashed the flight performance but this thing is nearly untouchable if you want to be, so long as you aren't fighting la-200s and sabres.

The F-89s were never meant to be used in anything approaching War Thunder gameplay. They would fly radar-directed courses against bombers and the computer would add appropriate lead and instruct them when to fire. They simply should never have been added or else they should have accompanied a major overhaul of game modes with regard to bombers and interceptors and been given their full weapons computer system

The current 'M429' hydra(Its name is wrong, it's currently M439, which is the canister/flechette hydra fuze, the M429 is the proxy fuze) is missing alot of HE filler. Like alot. It's either the M151 HE warhead with 1kg of explosive filler, or the M229 with 2.18KG of filler. We had to do two bug report on it because the first one close down with the "Fixed" tag without changing anything ingame. The last one was acknowledged and a fix should come sometime soon(Gaijin's Soon).

See this right here is WHY i believe the F-89D got nerfed into a zone of no recovery.... until recently. This rocket was meant to have a large payload because, the time delay of the fuse would allow for the enemy to escape relatively unharmed if the speed and angles were right. This larger warhead is what allowed for the fuse to have its natural delay, while still being within vicinity of the explosion, shrapnel and pressure wave to cause catastrophic damage to the airframe. The relatively delayed fuse, with a wonky proximity sensor, on top of missing over half of its explosive filler, practically gimps this aircraft to a unusable extent. With this recent "sale" I have noticed the delay and sensitivity of the sensor have been improved, now this may just be speculatory, but I do believe this vehicle has received some sort of shadow buff whether it be from the technology on the missiles alone, a change in the game engine that handles fuses or proximity detection, or possibly a combination.

After i bought this thing, years ago. I looked at the rockets and thought it be a ground attacker and used it as such with only the Heat rockets, until years later someone clapped me in a head-on with the HE rockets and i went like "Wait ... they have PROXY ?". Suddenly the plane made more sense to me, but there is nothing in the describtion of the rockets that would even hint at a proxy fuse.

The question is why use this when you have to buy the F-89B its more powerful, faster, and more consistent, just about every hit with those twenty mils will at least cause a crit, most of the time they severe or cause a fire. Also idk about the D variant but the B variant can take a beating, it can take fires, ripped wings, a completely destroyed engine, etc and still make it back to base or even get kills if your lucky, if it was a little more maneuverable it would be an amazing flight model, especially since you can out accelerate and out climb just about everyone

idk about anymore, but the D used to have a busted FM and the wing pods could take a LOT more damage before breaking off, meaning your wings would rarely break, and if they did, it just blew up the whole plane. though i think they're equal now.

People complained that it was too good, so they nerfed it. Then people didn't care for it as much because it got nerfed, so now they remove it from sale so they don't have to fix anything wrong with it. I picked it up a year or 2 ago. Not sure when they nerfed it though, I don't keep up with much War Thunder news as I'll usually play for a few months then abandon the game for a year or more then rinse and repeat. I do remember it being a lot easier to swat the enemies out of the sky that I was chasing before, now I almost don't even bother giving chase and try to only force a head-on.. In my opinion they never finished the aircraft for the game anyway. It's missing pylons to carry bombs instead of the rockets. Completely missing capability of carrying 3200lbs of bomb. Where's the Russian premiums getting removed? Can the SU-11 be removed next? 👺

Is it just me or Gaijin changed both F-89s' flight models few years ago? I remember as I played F-89B and was able to outturn jets from higher brs like G.91 or Mig-15. Now it feels much heavier. Also, they kinda nerfed F-89B during the big change of air guns' penetration. F-89B with armor piercing belt was able to kill medium tanks with one-two bursts, which is great for 20mm guns, especially if plane has 1200 rounds in total.

The F-89 Scorpio was essentialy a mix of the P-61 Black Widow and the F-84, turned into a bomber interceptor, F-94 Starfire, which was a modified F-80, and the F-86D Saber Dog, all were improvised stopgap fighters concocted by the fear that the USSR would launch a massive nuclear attack on the American and Canadian west Coast with their Tu-4 Bison bombers, since neither of the American first generation jet fighters had the range nor the performance to intercept the bombers, these stopgap fighter were created to fill in u til the century series was ready to take over. The weapons setup of th F-89D is made for exactly this role, it would rain rocket on a piston bomber formation on a head on direction, or from slightly and hopping that it was enough to kill or damage enough bombers until the attack would be called off. The plane in WT is kind of a relatively good historic representation of the plane, but it isn't doable to use it against fighters.

I also want to point out that IF you get a kill you get a pretty solid amount of SL since the kills in that plane count as Unguided rocket kills they count for the "Fire Arrows" reward which is 750 SL also it feel amazing to get a kill with the 98D, It is more sluggish than the 89B but my God is it fun.

I remember wanting one of these years ago. Nowadays France and Italy have some planes with Nord AAMs which are objectively better implementations of proxy detonation weapons, still a pain to aim, but at least you're dealing with the likes of Super Mystere and G91 as your platform.

I think this was supposed to be like F4 Phantom. Big and bulky but relying on superior avionics and weapon systems. This thing had a radar and autopilot which were supposed to fly towards the target and fire the rockets automatically.

I just picked this and the f89b up. Was planning on picking them both up during the next sale but oh well. Mostly wanted the F89B for the WIS ANG skin. The F89D is good at doing what it was meant to do, intercept bombers and big fighters. Ive had a lot of success using it in ground RB, but it is awful in air rb. The B model is just a menace against all the prop planes you face in ground rb. Fantastic anti-CAS plane.

Like a sturmtiger or a kv2 it's a gimmick that may not be the most effective. So as a grinder or a first premium definitely avoid. But for someone who already has everything else it's not a terrible addition, I can think of many worse ways to spend time or money on the game

Model: even the b Model is trash. i bought it in my early " i have income and am a long time wt player, lets reward myslelf for saving money" days i when i flew in the german tech tree and everyone raged in chat asap as soon as they saw the f89 bc it was supposed to be op. turns out it has: -shit controls when fast -oh boy do NOT dive IF ur fast bc u try to get the shot on a plane , full pull S( WASD) Does nothing , U even need to use the aribrake now to slow down in order to pull. -rips at 920 kph. SO IF a f80 has a run on u diving, HE WILL CATCH U BC UR 0 THROTTLING AT 910 and f80 is going to be faster (vmax) after the dive. -Does not turn, TURN?? trash nose uthority as well cant boom , only zoom and cant turn. just a pile of trash. Still regret buying this shit.

Pretty sure this vehicle got a sneak buff. Its rockets are way more accurate and the fuse is activated much more quickly. Before it was common for a jet to fly past the missile, while in proximity and not have the fuse go off until the jet has already pass, causing a lot of "hits" but no crits or severe damage. Now if a single rocket is WITHIN the radius of the jet it will instantaneously blow up without a delay, often going off BEFORE the player has a chance to react. While this is a "good change" and makes this vehicle more playable, I fear its a tactic to draw in players to make the purchase after they realize the jet CAN be used, even if its kind of a meme. I would be very interested in hearing from players who have purchased this, AFTER its been removed from the game. I have a suspicion it will be nerfed right back to the shadow realm. This is all speculatory of course, but I see what I see.

I just bought it yesterday and had to buy the F-89B first. I did not take it into battle because my best FTP plane is the Yak-3, so I tried some test flights. Too slow, even on the afterburner, to catch the MiG-15bis in the test flight and it would not let me add planes to the mission editor for some reason. The plane seems gimmicky and I am perfectly fine waiting until I get the Sabers before trying this thing out. I kind of hope Gaijin adds the F-89J so we can have AIM-4s, they could even add the Genie if Gaijin is okay with overkill.

removing premiums is great sometimes. im glad they removed the SO 8000 Narval, i think they did right? anyways that thing is atrocious. literally has 1 upside which is that it gets 6 really good cannons for head-ons. it cant turn, climb, or retain energy. it gets airspawn but airfield planes pass you in speed and altitude way before you reach the battle. when you do get chased you are forced to dive and then if you get enough space for a u-turn you have a chance at 1 head-on. if they don't commit to the head-on you are screwed because you just spent all that 750 km/h energy and kilometers of altitude on that u-turn. anyways if the Narval is ever on sale or still being sold do not buy it.

I bought this ages ago when it was on a 50% off sale. I wanted the F-89B and the F-89D. The B was at the time, a pretty solid premium vehicle… but damn I love meme vehicles. I enjoy the whacky ones in the game, but I understand why the average player wouldn’t be happy had they bought this. Ive been playing WT since 2013 so I knew what I was getting into when I was buying a jet that uses exclusively proximity fuse rockets for its guns. Buying it from that position of getting what I expected and being aware of how it would hold up against other aircraft in the game, I got the exact experience I was expecting. I had my fun with it. Most people new to the game who may have bought this premium expecting something good though… well they’d be rightly pissed off had they spent all of that money to get this absolutely piece of shit lol

Why not just use salvo mode on the rockets?? It makes them very reliable in my experience and ends up saving you far more rockets than trying to lob them off one at a time like here.

7.0 is an awful BR recently. When the last BR update came out it was incredibly forgiving because a majority of the matches were 6.0 downtiers for a time but after a bit 7.0 became and 8.0 hellhole. Not very fun when flying the kikka or Me 262. Fun if you can retain your speed not so much if you get a plane with better acceleration and an airbrake behind you.
