As a single mom of two boys, I would like to chime in on the social necessity of a strong military force with the amazingly effective and life-changing training that goes into churning out well-rounded, polite, and fiercely protective young men! With the rise of fatherless families and the over-coddling nature of moms and grand moms, I worry that it is this “coddling” dysfunction that 1) weakens children -men and women- and pushes for AI without any knowledge other than the safety of their children!! I agree with the General; we need all of it for the vital health of our country!

HRs last book was great because he stressed the importance of politicians deeply educating the public. I've not seen any recent politician fill that gap. The foreign policy narratives have become insulting. I'd love to see HR run for president one day. We need real leaders. Ppl may not know what that looks like but I guarantee, when the country sees a real leader, theyll say.....oh, that what that looks.like.

When I was in the DA’s Office in Manhattan, I would get up at the family beach house in The Rockaways, surf, shower, shave, motorcycle to NYC. When I went to Court by 10, my day was virtually over. Just waiting to surf and read and ride again, in the morning. HR knows what he is talking about.

Good interview. Wise to highlight the Baltic states, but the one doing the heavy lifting in Europe is Poland. Certainly a visit to Warsaw is in order. Ought to be the first, imo. Berlin is out of order and will remain so. Germany today isn't your grandfather's Germany. I think a question that should have been asked is 'Is two per cent of GDP still valid?' That was decided by Nato in 2006 when Putin was better behaved. If we're in Cold War II and need to be prepared for hot, that will require Cold War-era defence spending of 5+ per cent. Look at the '70s and '80s for reference. Worse still for the US, China was a marginal force then, still planning human-wave assaults and worried about the USSR. That's no longer the case. Not only does most of Europe not have the stomach for such spending, their ageing populations will impede economic growth whilst requiring even more social spending, such as on health care and pensions. If you look around at America's allies, they're almost all geriatric. If there is a silver lining, so too are Russia and China, but they don't have the same level of social spending. And an 'old' China still has millions and millions of 18- to 30-year-old men - a surplus of them. The population of those younger than 18 is 190 million, both male and female. Long wars are about attrition of manpower, resources, industrial capacity, and logistics, and it'll take a lot to attrit that many. America's three chief allies in Asia-Pacific, Japan, S. Korea, and Australia, have 17.6, 5.4, and 5.7 million people under 18, respectively. America has 73.6 million. This gives China +88 million. Russia has 30 million - don't forget Russia is an Asia-Pacific state as well.

Thank you for this editorial segment, and agreed the Biden approach to Ukraine (especially), Israel and T'aiwan and other foreign policy issues is sort of sanitized. One comment -- that the DNC and current administration are more attuned to Europe now whereas a GOP Presidency might be satisfied with Western European stability at this point and will first concentrate foreign policy on the Middle East and Far East. It is possible that a GOP Presidency could resolve Ukraine given background ties that bind, and that have been important to political stakeholders since the 1980's. The insights about Iran and the Middle East from your chair appear as valid and show the influence of Fouad Ajami and his evaluations of regional conflict there. This talk examined more issues than can be talked about here -- and the insights as brought out in discussion -- really valuable to the listener. Great!

Sorry General, but we have a fundamental problem here. You say we need to address the free rider program, but that clearly isn't working. Russia's economy is the same size as Italy's. Europe has 4× the population and 20× the economy as Russia, and their contributions to Ukraine's defense are minuscule. We just voted *another* $60 billion for Ukraine, while Germany (the 4th largest economy on Earth) just slashed their yearly contribution to $4 billion. So... who is endangered by Russia's aggression against Ukraine? The European Union! What are they doing to protect themselves? Very little I'm a bit older than you, I'm a Vietnam era veteran. I went to Berkeley on the GI Bill and studied international relations, so I know exactly what the trans Atlantic elites think of us. They think its OUR job to expend blood and treasure to defend them, and their job to criticize us and explain why we are "fascist." So.... let them figure it out for themselves! You repeat the falsehood that if we don't solve their problems now, at relatively low cost, our costs will be higher later. If that were true, then why didn't we get involved in the Congolese war, which probably killed more people than every other war of this century put together? Did ignoring it cost us anything? No! You cite the 9/11 attacks as a reason to try to dominate the middle east, but the ONLY reason Osama bin Laden orchestrated that attack was to force us to invade Afghanistan, where our power could be degraded, causing us to exit the Middle East. We are instrumental in propping up despotic dictatorships like in Egypt. That's why so many of the 9/11 attackers were highly educated Egyptians! Well guess what? Osama bin Laden won! We lost! J.D. Vance spent a year in Iraq in the Marines, and to him it was clear that we shouldn't have been there. (Which is what I learned many decades earlier about Vietnam!) So... I think I speak for a LOT of Americans, including a LOT of veterans, in saying we should let go of trying to control the world. It just doesn't work. By the way, General.... I really admire you. (I was USMA ex class of 1977. I felt to the core of my being that it was corrupt. So I resigned halfway through plebe year. Toughest thing I ever did. But it was the right thing to do. In their junior year, my entire class was busted for cheating in the largest honor scandal in history. 20% of the class was rounded up in Boarder's Ward, waiting to be dishonorably expelled, but they wrote out sworn, notarized affidavits implicating 80% of the class. So... West Point compromised, and let them all graduate, the convicted ones with the class of '78. Otherwise West Point would have ended.)

Agree, agree, agree when it comes to NATO and other burden-sharing alliances. PARTICULARLY when it comes to negotiations with Europeans, they don't see his "PAY MORE OR WE'RE GOING TO PULL OUT!" as the negotiating tactic that I'm about 80% it is. They see it as a sign that we don't want to be in the alliance, that we've moved away from them strategically, and that the alliance is falling apart. That could have DIASTROUS consequences for the world, but America SPECIFICALLY. You don't have to threaten your friends to get them to do more in a collaborative alliance. There are other, BETTER ways to do that.
