EE Wave I am using a 100k potentiometer but I am running a 100k resistor across each end to bring it down to 50k

Now please try without connecting the resistor. Use only the potentiometer. No problem with 100K potentiometer. And let me know the result. And what about the othet potentiometer? Is that working?

EE Wave I took off the resistor and got the same result, I think my problem lies in the transistor I am using a bc457

There is no transistor like bc457. I think it is BC547 or BF457. And we need PNP transistor for this, not NPN, BC547 & BF457 are NPN transistor. You can use any PNP transistor like BD136, BD140, BC558, BC327, 2N3906, SK100. These are very common. Try this and tell me the result.
