For me, that was the golden era of tennis. Legends like Sampras, Agassi, Courier, Becker, Chang, Muster, Kuerten, Hewitt, Rafter, Kafelnikov, Safin, Rios, Moya, Roddick and Federer (at his begining).... a countless number of stars playing at the same era. When you see a Kuerten`s game like these you realize what his early depart meant to tennis. We all miss you GuGa !!

Guga! I used to love Kuerten's game...and his crazy hair. I was beyond bummed out about his hip injury. It sucked when his career was cut short by it. I always forget how tall he was because he was so damned skinny. And his SHB was insane. It was especially effective on clay so it would have been interesting to see him play Nadal at RG.

I think of the current crop of young stars only Alcaraz seems to play with a lot of variety - angles, drop shots, comes to the net. The men's game has developed into a game similar to the women's game but on steroids - a lot of power hitting from the baseline. I guess racquet technology, stronger players, and slower courts are to blame.

At this point Kuerten was only 26 years old, and was already playing with a terrible hip and bad movement. After 1-2 years he was virtually a retired player because of his injuries. You can say whatever you want. for me he was one of the best players to ever touch a racquet. Also he was a man with a great heart.

5 years is a generation in sports. Roger's generation is Safin, Roddick, Hewitt, Nalbandian... Rafa and Novak are from the mid-late 2000s gen. What makes it seem like the big 3 is one generation is perception, because Nadal was an incredibly early bloomer and Federer took a few more years to start winning slams it feels like they showed up around the same time, and only 3 years into their shared dominance Djokovic won his first AO and became a mainstay in the top 5. Meanwhile Saffin, Hewitt and Roddick got to the spotlight earlier and lasted way shorter than Federer, so they feel older than they are. Guga's first slam was in 97 and last was in 2001, Roger's first was in 2003. They're 6 years apart in their first slam and like 18 in their final, different gens on age and achievements

How good was Kuerten? Everyone forgets so quickly. That's a clay court single hand backhand, absolutely perfect footwork and hip twist, huge weapon but also he hit groundstrokes so deep, similar to Agassi. Slow courts, very entertaining tennis many thanks

It's funny to read all this modern love for Guga's backhand, because in the late 90's, it was said that it was too timing-dependent/ offered too little room for error, and that he had "an awful lot of swing off both sides to have much hope for success on faster surfaces". But in '99 he made it to at least the Quarters of Wimbledon, USO, Indian Wells and RG. Then of course came the Masters Cup run beating Magnus Norman, Kafelnekov, Sampras and Agassi all on fast indoor surface to end the year #1.

7:51 a few ridiculous forehands from Federer. Unloads on the down the line, then the big CC one does the damage (this one looks a bit like a Djokovic forehand) and then finishing with the signature inside out. The full repertoire from one side of the court to the other.
