I think of the current crop of young stars only Alcaraz seems to play with a lot of variety - angles, drop shots, comes to the net. 5 years is a generation in sports. Roger's generation is Safin, Roddick, Hewitt, Nalbandian... Rafa and Novak are from the mid-late 2000s gen. What makes it seem like the big 3 is one generation is perception, because Nadal was an incredibly early bloomer and Federer took a few more years to start winning slams it feels like they showed up around the same time, and only 3 years into their shared dominance Djokovic won his first AO and became a mainstay in the top 5. Meanwhile Saffin, Hewitt and Roddick got to the spotlight earlier and lasted way shorter than Federer, so they feel older than they are. Guga's first slam was in 97 and last was in 2001, Roger's first was in 2003. They're 6 years apart in their first slam and like 18 in their final, different gens on age and achievements

Federer was still not in his prime here and his movement not matured yet but you can clearly see that he could've also won this match, it was a close match.

Guga's backhand was so sweet, and Fed was already doing damage with his forehand.

Federer's big weakness during his career were the wasted break points. It's incredible how he missed the break points generated against big players

Impresionante Guga , un genio !!!!!

Federer made the forgivable mistake of continuing to attack the backhand. Works against other opponents but not Guga. This backhand is the main reason Guga won slams and became number 1.
